Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he'd killed.
What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he's going to die he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.
Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.
Review
I am loving this series! My favorites so
far are Ethan and Adam but these two, Justin and Sam, are running a very close
second. Justin is Ethan’s brother, the one that went missing 12 years ago along
with the now found Adam. Sam stumbles on the injured Justin in one of the
cabins and what happens from there is nothing short of exciting, heart
breaking, and sweet. It’s funny to have such a random combination of things in
the middle part, which takes up the bulk of the story, but the author creates
this story that allows for that without confusion.
Sam is this flirty chef of Branches on
the Crooked Tree Ranch. He has found his family on this land, not the family he
has to go back for after his grandmother dies. Those people aren’t his family
since he stopped conforming to what they saw him as and who he truly was. He is
feeling lost and weak in the beginning of the story, it wasn’t just from the
loss in his family, but from seeing around him all these men finding their happy endings
when he struggles to do more than run Branches and ride his dirt bike. Running
into Justin changes that.
Justin is the long lost brother that
Ethan never stopped looking for until the day he turns up with Sam as his
savior. He was so injured that no one knew what to do because one important
fact Justin keeps repeating is “Don’t tell anyone” and “Danger!” The guilt this
man carries around on him is staggering! Guilt over Adam’s death and that he
felt he was the cause of the all situation. Danger people and his dangerous job
have kept him away this long. Now what can keep him?
The slow build between Justin and Sam it
was absolutely heart breaking and sweet. Sam is just a sweet guy and it makes
me completely fall for him the way he sticks by Justin’s side while
simultaneously bemoaning the food he had to eat. Justin was just broken. He’s
that guy who seems completely fine and whole but really is so empty and hollow
inside. This is a hurt/comfort read that was phenomenally done and kept my
interest the whole time. The drama part of the story was well told and made
Justin’s disappearance and the fact that he stayed away believable. The man had
been manipulated in his grief over the loss of his best friend. The passion
between these two complex men is heat and love all rolled into one.
Can’t wait for book 4!!! Especially
wondering who this one could be about and I kinda like the anticipation!
