Blog Tour: Wake by K. Evan Coles & Brigham Vaughn ~Guest Post #Giveaway

Story Origins -- Just For Fun

Several years ago, back before we decided to take the leap and make a go of this writing thing, we used to write together just for fun. Our approaches to writing were very different--K. Evan sometimes struggled to find words, while Brigham found so many words she felt overwhelmed--but our styles blended well and we truly enjoyed working as a team. When we got into the sweet writing zone together, we could almost hear the click of pieces sliding into place.

The story that became the novel Wake and its sequel, Calm, started out as a one of those just-for-fun collaborations. We came up with a story idea and talked it out, crafting a story about a het couple who meet for a strictly sexual encounter but go on to become acquainted and eventually fall in love. We wrote the story in a burst of creativity over just a few weeks, sometimes working simultaneously in the same doc, literally watching each other write on occasion (which is an odd experience if you haven’t tried it), and encouraging each other as we went along.

We had a blast. What’s more, readers really enjoyed the finished story.

The funny thing for us as the story-crafters, however, was that a same-sex couple, Garrett and Riley--who were minor players in the story--stood out to us both as characters. In our minds, they began to eclipse the original main character couple, even though we hardly knew them.

Finally, we had to ask ourselves: what are we going to do about these men?

In between other projects, we talked casually about exploring Garrett and Riley’s backstory, and decided we could probably write something novella-length exploring their characters. Then Brigham had the idea to submit the manuscript to a publisher running a contest and we were off and running.

It wasn’t long before we came to the realization both characters had more to say--a lot more. Garrett and Riley’s story took on a life of its own, and each character evolved as the plot developed and the cast of characters grew (and grew). We got to know Garrett and Riley as boys in their late teens and took them into their early thirties. We changed their careers around and gave them families and highly entertaining circles of lovers and friends. We even changed Garrett’s name, and he became Carter.

What began as an exercise to explore character backstories morphed into first one novel and then two that spanned over fifteen years for the characters and over three years for us. And remember those highly entertaining circles of friends we gave Carter and Riley? Well, they’ve now spawned a four (or maybe five) part spin-off series.

One of the most enjoyable parts of writing collaboratively is the journey these characters have taken us on.

We hope you’ll enjoy reading their story as much as we have enjoyed telling it!

Blurb

Book one in the Tidal series

Carter Hamilton and Riley Porter-Wright room together as Harvard undergraduates. An immediate friendship forms, but as the years pass it deepens into something neither man understands. As attraction simmers under the surface, lines begin to blur. When they move back to Manhattan, they gradually slip into the lives their families have envisioned for them.

Both men marry, but in time, Riley realizes he’s ended up in a passionless relationship like his parents’ while his career takes center stage. Although he loves his wife, Carter misses the emotional and physical connection he shared with Riley.

The weight of Riley’s feelings and his growing discontentment with his life eventually push him to tell Carter the truth about how he feels. Shocked and unable to face his own feelings, Carter rejects Riley.

As each man comes to terms with the lies they’ve told themselves, each other and the people around them, they find their lives changing in ways they never imagined. They soon discover that the truths they’ve been longing to tell shake the foundations of their friendship.

K. Evan Coles is a mother and tech pirate by day and a writer by night. She is a dreamer who, with a little hard work and a lot of good coffee, coaxes words out of her head and onto paper.

K. lives in the northeast United States, where she complains bitterly about the winters, but truly loves the region and its diverse, tenacious and deceptively compassionate people. You’ll usually find K. nerding out over books, movies and television with friends and family. She’s especially proud to be raising her son as part of a new generation of unabashed geeks.

Brigham Vaughn is starting the adventure of a lifetime as a full-time writer. She devours books at an alarming rate and hasn’t let her short arms and long torso stop her from doing yoga.  She makes a killer key lime pie, hates green peppers, and loves wine tasting tours. A collector of vintage Nancy Drew books and green glassware, she enjoys poking around in antique shops and refinishing thrift store furniture. An avid photographer, she dreams of traveling the world and she can’t wait to discover everything else life has to offer her.
