Synopsis
Superpower—check. Worldwide fans? No thank you!
Kent Laine and his twin brother Jimmy have superpowers in a world where most people don’t believe. Sure, comic books and movies make it seem so entertaining, but for them it isn’t. The brothers were raised to keep their powers hidden. To only use them when it’s absolutely necessary.
The struggle is real for Kent. He can heal people, but at what cost to himself? He envies his brother’s ability to speak with animals. If only he’d been given a non-active gift because the urge to help everyone is always strong.
In walks Albert Ott. His sister is dying. Will Kent be able to let her die? Or will he help the man who he is coming to love.

Review
Well, THAT was a fun little read!
Most short stories don’t pack as much character as this one
did. Maybe because it’s written more
conversationally than a straight forward telling of events, I’m not sure. What I do know is that THIS is the type of
short I enjoy reading. Fast paced,
charming characters, and emotional depth.
Kent and Jimmy Laine are brothers, twins in fact, with super
powers. (And, as a quick aside, can I
just say that I suspect those names are an homage to Superman. Seriously, Clark KENT, Lois LANE, and JIMMY
Olsen). Jimmy has the ability to speak to animals, and Kent has the ability to
heal, but at a terrible cost. They have
hidden their powers out of fear for their lives, and instead have gone into
business together operating a vet clinic.
Albert Ott takes his sisters sick cat to the clinic, and
it’s through the cat that Jimmy finds out that Albert’s sister is also
sick. Dying, in fact. Jimmy calls Kent, who is immediately attracted
to Albert. Upon getting to know Albert,
Kent must decide: save Albert’s sister
and risk outing himself and possibly his brother, putting both their lives at
risk, or letting Albert’s sister die and live with the guilt of knowing he
literally has the power to save her, and watching the man he’s grown to care
for suffer through grief.
Hard choices, to say the least. Not something you would expect in a story
this size.
I’m not going to tell you how it ends, but it’s well worth
your time.
