Synopsis

Cloister Witte is a man with a dark past and a cute dog. He’s happy to talk about the dog all day, but after growing up in the shadow of a missing brother, a deadbeat dad, and a criminal stepfather, he’d rather leave the past back in Montana. These days he’s a K-9 officer in the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and pays a tithe to his ghosts by doing what no one was able to do for his brother—find the missing and bring them home.

He’s good at solving difficult mysteries. The dog is even better.

This time the missing person is a ten-year-old boy who walked into the woods in the middle of the night and didn't come back. With the antagonistic help of distractingly handsome FBI agent Javi Merlo, it quickly becomes clear that Drew Hartley didn't run away. He was taken, and the evidence implies he’s not the kidnapper’s first victim. As the search intensifies, old grudges and tragedies are pulled into the light of day. But with each clue they uncover, it looks less and less likely that Drew will be found alive.

Review

I went into this book expecting an enemies to lovers story, but it's so much more than that. TA Moore gives a mystery/thriller that keeps you guessing!

Cloister Witte is a K-9 officer with the San Diego Sheriff's Department, he seems to be an ordinary guy. Cloister appears to love his dog more than people, especially a certain Fed who annoys him so much. In Cloister, still waters run deep. This man has secrets and pain buried within him. This new case that's he's assigned to will test him.

FBI agent Javi Merlo is the resident Fed in the town of Plenty, California. He works with the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Javi sees this position as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Javi doesn't have a lot of friends and definitely doesn't do relationships. He believes in keeping his life compartmentalized. Cloister Witte and his dog annoy Javi and he doesn't believe in the work they do. Then a case comes that requires Javi to put aside his dislike of dogs and his lack of confidence in Cloister and bring a young boy home...together.

Drew Hartley is 10 years old and walked into the woods and didn't return. This case brings so many old ghosts back for Cloister and tests Javi's limits. These two men who don't really like each must work together. Not liking each other does not stop the attraction they feel. Now isn't the time for distractions, they have a little boy to find. Some things, no matter how much you try and avoid..just can't be stopped though.

This book is really good, the mystery of where Drew went keeps you on your toes. The heat between Javi and Cloister is palpable and fun to see. Bourneville, the K-9 dog stole my heart! I love when a book surprises me and this one definitely did.
