Synopsis

Sammy Raphael is a crappy witch, and on top of that, he can’t seem to get a boyfriend. Where other supernaturals can bring down lightning and manifest wealth, Sammy can paint. Granted, the “prophetic” paintings he creates at night always come true, but they never predict anything important. Sammy feels like a total loser with a worthless ability.

One night he paints a gorgeous guy who turns out to be his secret crush, the human Ryder, but Ryder’s changed so much he’s almost unrecognizably beautiful. Then Sammy paints an angel who turns out to be a witch. But is that witch also a devil—a devil who can bring down Sammy’s whole community and everyone he loves? And why the hell does Ryder keep changing? Aloysius, the black cat familiar, always backs a winner. So why is he backing Sammy?

Review

I am a lover of stories that have magic in them add in different “species” of magic users, and I am all in. I just wish this one had a little bit more...something to get my heart racing like Miss. Lain’s other stories.

Sammy is one of those characters that to some may appear supremely dumb; I didn’t. I think he is so insecure he doesn’t always see what is right in front of his face. Believe me, people like that exist, my son is one of them. The most oblivious person I know. But that does mean that I think the author took it a bit too far, especially when it came to what Aloysius, the black cat familiar, was trying to clue him in on. Why wouldn’t he even listen a little bit?

Ryder was a character I loved. Strong and tall and beautiful with an utter sweetness to him that made you love him. We don’t know much about him, but we do know that not all is as it seems when it comes to the pointy-eared best friend and crush of Sammy’s. Again, those are some of the oblivious things that the author took too far. If the Witch Master can’t recognize simple clues that Ryder is more than human, then there’s trouble.

The secondary characters played a big part in each step of the story, and each was distinct and easy to tell apart. Lucien was clearly set from the start to be the evil magical being there to cause trouble, but we weren’t quite sure why until later on, so the mystery of who he is was well handled. The writing was good and fun to read. She brought to life a world with witches and fallen angels and more that kept me reading more than most anything else did. Besides how smitten Sammy was with Ryder. There were a few corny lines here and there but not too much, and that’s probably just me being me.

Overall, not a bad read but not one of her best I’ve read either.
