"He's not a wolf."

Devastated by the death of his best friend, Zio is a soldier with one thing on his mind: revenge. Consumed by a conflict that's raged as long as he's been alive, he's had little time or inclination to learn the legends of the shifter world he was raised in. And he certainly doesn't have time to deal with a shifter of a different kind, even if it's for the good of the war effort. For the good of his pack. The fact that he's already crossed paths with the new face in his unit is almost irrelevant.

Almost.

Do no harm. Give life not death: it's the oath Devan was reborn to live by, so when he's sent abroad to embed with a wolf pack as their resident healer, he doesn't hesitate. In the supernatural world, some bonds are instant--soldiers become brothers, pack become family. But others run deeper and before long, Devan's at the mercy of instincts he can't control. Zio's inner wolf is desperate to be with Devan, while Devan struggles to keep the pack safe. But as the war escalates, and new love is tainted by anguish and pain, the battles within might prove the toughest of them all.

"I won't let him die."

Review

I’ll be 100% honest and admit that shifter books are not my usual go-to kind of book. I’ve read a fair number mind you, but when I’m searching my Kindle or scrolling through Goodreads to decide on what I want to read next, I usually don’t pick a shifter book. But, when one of my favorite authors writes one, you can best believe I’m going to check it out! Garrett Leigh is an auto-buy author for me and has never let me down once, and her new book, Fated Hearts didn’t either! Wow! I loved everything about this book, from the world building to the characters, Fated Hearts was everything I expected from a book written by Garrett Leigh.
There have been wars waging for as long as anyone can remember, especially for Zio. War is all he’s known his whole life and when his best friend is killed, he’s angry and bent on revenge and nothing is going to stand in his way. Except maybe for Devan, the new healer that’s been sent to assist their pack. To say that sparks fly immediately when these two meet one another would be an understatement, but it’s not in the best way considering that when they first meet the sparks are from animosity and not attraction. Well, kind of. There’s no doubt that the two feel something for one another, which becomes more and more apparent as the fated mates bond becomes stronger and stronger the more time they spend together.
I really enjoyed the slow burn between Zio and Devan and I loved how calm and gentle Devan tempered a bit of Zio’s brashness. Oh not all the way of course, which I was happy to see. These two are great together and really complemented one another in all the best ways. There is A LOT of world building in the novel, maybe a bit too much at times, and the story stalled in a few places because of it, but the characters and the romance between Zio and Devan kept me turning the pages. The action sequences are intense and the slow burn sexual tension between Zio and Devan was hot and steamy. I am so interested in seeing what comes next in the series and I can’t wait for the next book. Be sure to check this one out, y’all, you won’t be sorry if you do!
