Synopsis
Colby Fischer is a bad boy with attitude and a chip on his shoulder. As a senior at a Southern California college, he knows this may be his last shot. He doubts he’ll ever become the hockey legend he dreamed of being as a kid, but he definitely doesn’t want to be an accountant. Things get interesting when he’s asked to train the new intern at his step-dad’s firm, who happens to be the troublemaker from his econ class. And the one guy Colby can’t stand.
Baseball is Sky Jameson’s life. He’s happy to be back at Chilton for his senior year, but he’s burned a few bridges and has a bit too much free time off-season. He could use the money and something to keep him busy until his season begins. But his accidental crush on his prickly coworker could be a problem. Colby is straight and Sky is in the closet. Their timing isn’t great, but the intense attraction is hard to deny. With his final season on the hockey team in the balance, Colby may have to decide if he’s ready to come out on the ice.
Review
Colby had two goals in life—getting seen on the ice and
moving up to the big leagues and making it through his boring econ class.
Numbers were easy—becoming a pro in hockey was another matter altogether. It
didn’t help that Colby felt a bit stuck in a rut or that the guy in econ who
seemed to be skating by—arriving late and barely there--suddenly was forced to
sit beside him during a quiz and all Colby could notice was how gorgeous he
was. What was up with that? Colby was straight—sure he hadn’t had a date in a
while nor was he all that interested but still he wasn’t like his roomie and
best friend who suddenly discovered he was bi. So why did he kiss that stupid
guy—Sky—in the parking lot? And why was he meeting him for lunch and wondering
what it would be like to kiss him again?
Lane Hayes has added to her Out in College series with book number five, Out on the Ice. Even though the character of Sky was in a previous
novel, this one can easily be read as a standalone. Poor Colby—he is utterly
confused and totally smitten. Before I go further this is definitely an out for
you story but not a gay for you and for some readers I know this is a distinct
difference. Also this is a bisexual character—there is no denying here that
Colby also can find women attractive but finds Sky more so. This novel is a
self-discovery type story with Colby really finding out more about himself and
growing as a person because of it. It helps that while Sky is snarky and often
presents as more of a less serious person, he is all in and quite tender while
helping Colby embrace who he really is and his sexuality. In some ways that got
a bit confusing for me only because his concern and care for Colby during their
quiet intimate moments really jarred against his outward persona when they were
in public. However, it really was Sky who helped Colby understand his feelings
and his bisexuality.
This is a novel that will definitely appeal to those who
love their sports romances. Two young guys—both struggling with a past hurt
that has them tied up in knots and both looking for someone to be with that
will help them ease the pain inside. For Colby—the death of his dad much
earlier in life has always left an empty place inside—a well of sadness that
has left him a bit angry and confused. For Sky—parents who in essence disowned
him when he came out and threw him away like the previous day’s garbage is a memory
that lingers and rubs like an open wound. So there is hurt/comfort, enemies to
lovers, out for you, and so much more in this novel and a really lovely
resolution to the story in the end.
If you are in need of a little bit of escape (and who isn’t these
days) and are hankering for a sweet romance with little angst but lots of heat
then Out on the Ice is the novel for
you.
