Nothing in this world matters more to him than caring for his daughter, not even accidentally falling in lust with the doctor next door. Challenged by his growing attraction to Sean, and confronted by painful memories of his family, Ash has to learn that love is all that matters.

When ER doctor Sean moves in with his friends next door to sexy single father Ash, he falls so quickly it takes his breath away. The sex they have is hot, but Ash is adamant
his heart is too full with love for his daughter to let anyone else in. Why is Sean the only one who sees how scared Ash is, and how can he prove to his new lover that he desperately wants the three of them to become a family?

Review

Ash had big dreams—he was going to be a father and have a partner by his side to help him raise their daughter. Unfortunately the man he thought loved him and the idea of joint fatherhood had other ideas and left him holding a broken heart and a newborn baby. Thankfully his twin sister stepped in to help but now Ash and baby Mia were home and Ash was terrified. What if he failed his beautiful little girl? What if he made so many mistakes he turned out to be a lousy father? Sleep deprived, lonely, and scared, the last thing Ash needed was some drunk stranger on his doorstep late at night asking to come in. Turns out the guy actually lived next door and when one of his roommates, a gorgeous doctor, stopped by to apologize, Ash made sure to be polite but keep his distance. Mia was his first priority—he had no time for romance. Too bad Sean from next door had other ideas.

Single by RJ Scott signals the beginning of a new series all aimed at stories about single fathers. Ash is perhaps the quintessential first time parent—hovering, anxious and a little paranoid about failing. He loves his little Mia so very much and that trait alone made him so appealing to me. I think, at times, his fears were a bit over the top in terms of the frantic way he tried to be so perfect for Mia but one can’t fault his intentions or the heart-melting way he loved his little baby. Sean was just the perfect match for Ash. Genuinely caring and determined to get to know both Ash and Mia and become a part of their lives. He took every argument Ash made for them to stay apart and only be friends in stride and continued to slowly break down the walls of mistrust and anxiety Ash had built around himself.

I loved the fact that RJ Scott took her time building the relationship between Ash and Sean. This was no quick romance or insta-love trope, instead the two men became friends first and lovers second—really just a perfect way for this story to evolve. The two fit together seamlessly in many ways but that’s not to say that there wasn’t some bumps along the way—this is what, in my opinion, made the story feel so authentic. Whereas Ash’s preoccupation with Mia could be seen as a bit too much and a tad unbelievable, the love that developed between Ash and Sean was fully realistic.

Single was a very nice beginning to a series that I look forward to reading. If each story is handled in the fashion that this one was I am fairly certain the author will give us many more installments to enjoy.
