Review

Devon has spent the last thirty years in a marriage that has become increasingly sterile and devoid of love forcing him to hide who he really is. Now that he’s almost fifty years old he has given up any hope of finding a man who would not only want to be his daddy but who could accept the fact that he is far from the idea of what a boy should look like. But Devon is desperate to be loved in that way—he needs someone to guide him, take care of him and help calm all the myriad of negative thoughts that chase around his head every day.

When Bern hears that Devon is finally free, he returns home—a place he had to leave several years earlier because he couldn’t stand watching the man he loved being continually shut down by a husband who cared for no one but himself. Bern has been in love with Devon since he was a teen but was never able to express his feelings much less broach the idea of being the man’s daddy. But now everything has changed and Bern is determined Devon will be his boy—now all he has to do is convince the older man of his sincerity and determination to be the daddy Devon has always craved.

If you are into daddy/little kink then look no further than J.M. Dabney’s latest, Waited So Long. To say this novella is hot is to not do justice to the sensual and emotional impact the story has. This is hurt/comfort at its best and, honestly, the kink is pretty darn erotic. I loved how Bern slowly but masterfully took control of Devon, constantly reassuring him of his value while also treating him like the boy he so desperately wanted to be. There was obvious love in everything Bern did from punishment to playtime to rough sex in the bedroom. Every step of the way, Bern made sure there was not only consent but desire on Devon’s part to forge ahead and make their relationship essentially a 24/7 reality. Even though Bern was many years younger than Devon he had done his homework and fully embraced the daddy role for his boy.

Watching Devon slowly heal from a marriage that had left him broken and alone was really the best part of this story. This was a man that lived with anxiety and doubt—with little self-esteem and such deep sadness over not being able to fully live as another man’s boy. When he can finally trust that Bern won’t play a cruel trick on him and mock him after seeing him be his little boy, their time together becomes even more intense and involved. They move from simple petting and mild kink into domination and playing their roles both inside and outside the bedroom. I have to say that this story really was incredibly sexy and I am not usually a huge fan of this particular kink but the way in which the author chose to develop these two characters and their relationship made me a real fan.

Waited So Long is sure to satisfy anyone who loves this type of kink and make new fans of those looking to explore this type of story for the first time. I truly enjoyed getting to know Devon and Bern and look forward to reading more by this author.

Excerpt

I locked myself in my house and went to take care of emails and study my itinerary. I could retire, but what would I do with myself? At least work kept me busy. It distracted me from the loneliness. I worked because I had nothing left.
I took a seat at my drafting table as I worked on the new design for my client. His steel monstrosity would clash with everything around the building. It was a showpiece that had no more value than broadcasting his wealth. Once again, my brain went back to wondering if it was time to retire, maybe working for myself, but I felt I was too old to start over. All I felt was doubt and insecurity.
When I was younger, I’d felt confident and fearless. Every day was ripe with possibility, and now I weighed everything by what was expected of me. I felt as if my life was over with; I wasn’t even fifty and hopelessness weighted me down. When I looked in the mirror, I could only see what I was and not what I could be. That, out of all the recent events, was the hardest reality to accept. I viewed myself through a skewed lens Lawrence had shaped.
My fantasies were still a cause of shame just as they were for the past thirty years. I’d forbidden myself from demanding what I wanted because what would people think when they knew the real me. The person who existed beneath the façade. The respectable architect in a small suburb who was just a shadow of his former self.
I was a middle-aged man with silver-streaked hair and a belly, who dreamed of the impossible. I tossed my pencil aside and got up. My mind wasn’t in it, so a shower and early to bed. Tomorrow was a new day.
