Saturday Author Spotlight: Kol Anderson #Interview #Giveaway

My author Saturday Spotlight  today is none other than Kol Anderson. Kol describes himself very matter of fact in his bio, "I'm not the guy who writes books in your head. I'm the guy who writes books in MY head." I love that. It's how all writers should view what they do. Kol writes on the darker side of fiction. Taboo, dark erotica, basically not for the faint of heart. Today we are going to get to know him a little better, look at his work, and there's a wonderful giveaway at the end. So let's begin.

Broken Series Season One

When Vincent takes Aaron to be a sex worker for a dangerous BDSM club Aaron thinks his life is over.

Carter Bennett is Aaron's replacement after Aaron manages to escape. In captivity he meets a man named Tristan who is the only person who has been good to him in all this time and though Carter deeply cares for him, he doesn’t believe that Tristan is any better than the rest of the clients at Vincent’s Club. Carter gets sent forcibly to a client they only refer to as ‘Master.’

Loose Ends
What will become of Carter? Will ‘Master’ turn out to be a bigger evil than Vincent or will he be the savior Carter has been waiting for?
Will Eric get away with what he plans to do with Aaron?
Find out in this final installment of the Broken Series where all the loose ends will be tied.

Interview

Thank you, Kol, for being here today and being my spotlight author.  I’m actually just starting to get to know you myself as a reader so these questions are just as much for me as they are for everyone reading them today.

Where do you see yourself as a writer? You have a dark erotica streak in you. That taboo vibe thrums through your fingers. But, if someone was meeting you for the first time and said, “Hey, what do you write?” What would you say?

Most of the time people start judging you the moment you tell them you write erotica. The stigmatization is worse when you write ‘dark erotica’ which I never feel ashamed of writing but I know that there are people who still judge authors for it, but that’s something that can’t be helped. As an author, in the community, everyone knows what I write and that I really don’t like to restrict myself much when it comes to writing. If it’s taboo I’m interested in exploring it. I find it exciting. And if that makes me a bad person to some then I’m honestly not bothered by people who think that way. They’re not my target audience and they’re not the kind of people I would care to be around. I have enough people who believe in my work and support me, have  supported me through the years, even when I was completely down and unable to write, so it’s their opinion I truly value, not the so-called critics because that’s not who my work is for.  But yes if someone asks me “What do you write?” I’d probably tell them “Something that you might have trouble reading.”

Your Broken Series. I see you’ve been putting them into seasons. That’s a very popular thing I’ve noticed that authors are doing. Are you currently working on season 3 and how many seasons do you think Broken will be?

Okay here’s the thing. A lot of people think Broken Series was me jumping on some kind of series bandwagon, when honestly, I started writing it years ago, and only published it in 2013 which again, was very long ago, and it was my first thing ever! I wasn’t even into reading romance and I had no idea taboo genre fiction existed, M/M or otherwise, so mostly I just stuck to literary fiction, horror, and Transgressive fiction authors like Bret Easton Ellis or Chuck Palahniuk. And then one day out of nowhere, I got the urge to write Prisoner. So I did. I was a newbie, and I sucked at it, I get that, but I’ve kept growing and taking classes and learning over the years so I could continue to grow and it’s the same today. Since Broken was more like a “write what I feel like writing” that’s exactly what I did Lol I just wrote that series just like it came to me! Plain and simple. So I realize it’s not perfect but somehow people started loving it and the response I got was either entirely too negative or very positive and I guess people wanted something dark and taboo. Once I started writing though, I realized there were M/M books out there, like a whole community of authors and readers and so I read writers like Lisa Henry, JA Rock, Riptide Authors, Power Play books are still my favorite! Flesh Cartel too! But you see that all came later! I personally like the idea of episodic stuff, because I watch episodic stuff so that’s how my mind works I guess but lately I’ve been more into writing full lengths, even if they are part of a series.

On June 1st 2016 you have a new book coming out which we showed above. It’s called Senseless and it is absolutely a taboo book. I’m very excited to read it as I’m sure a lot of your fans are as well.  It looks to have a lot of elements to it. I want to know more about it of course, more than what’s in the blurb so can you tell us a little more about it? Is it a ménage? Is it part of a series?

Absolutely! I’m really excited about this book because for one thing I’ve been taking a lot of writing classes and now I know things that I didn’t before, so I’m writing by adding all those elements of writing rather than the usual ‘wing it.’ I like to believe that I grow every day as a writer, and the more you write the better you get at it, it sounds boring but most people don’t know that a lot of writing is about practice and learning skills and applying those skills. But then there’s the non-boring part—the use of imagination, coming up with concepts, keeping yourself motivated long enough to write something and finish it. Anyway, I digress. The point is I’m excited about this book because I feel very close to the characters and the story line and it is a taboo book of course! There’s plenty of dub-con, non-con, abuse, graphic violence and then there’s the brotherly love aspect!

Here’s the description of the book:

Jason Hamilton has been in love with his baby brother for as long as he can remember. He made it a point to pamper and protected him all his life. After the death of their parents, they’ve grown accustomed to each other’s love, relying on no one else but themselves. So, when eighteen year old Colton gets kidnapped from his college dorm, Jason will do anything to get him back.

Devyn Taylor has had a crush on Colton Hamilton for years. But being Jason’s friend he never had the guts to actually go ahead with what he wanted. But no matter how much he’s tried Devyn can’t seem to forget about Colton. So when some friends who got badly burned by Jason, devise a plan to kidnap his brother, Devyn realizes this is his one and only chance to get Colton.

The problem?

Colton loves his brother and isn’t even willing to give Devyn a shot.

And Devyn didn’t realize how sadistic his so-called friends are and just how serious things are about to get.

Do you general read the same types of books that you write or are you polar opposites in reading vs writing?

Oh no, I read pretty much every genre! So long as it’s written well but I’m known to be picky. Lol So yeah, I won’t really touch a ‘romance’ light-hearted book because it’s not my thing. But I love Flesh Cartel, pretty much all of Lisa Henry and JA Rock books and other dark authors from Riptide as well as people like Jack L. Pyke, Lynn Kelling. Recently, I fell in love with a new author’s work: Rodd Clark. If you want to see a debut that is plain brilliant check out this author because you won’t find anything like it in any other book out there.

Anything dark is definitely on the menu but I feel like sometimes authors write ‘dark’ because they think they’re being edgy! When truly they have NO IDEA how to do dark which naturally shows in their work. I think that’s stupid. It’s like watching a vampire series without the blood and gore or like listening to Megadeath and lowering the fucking volume. I know this will piss a lot of people off, but don’t say its ‘dark’ just because you basically regurgitated the premise from a dark book, and wrote some pansy version of it. For instance, the topic of “Stockholm syndrome” it’s like EVERYONE is writing a book about it! I’ve read so many of them and I was hugely disappointed! But there is a market for such books; I won’t deny it so if anyone wants to read that they should by all means! You should be allowed to like what you like and read or watch what makes you happy. Just feel like we have a responsibility to the genre, as MM authors, and we shouldn’t take it lightly that’s all. Whatever you write, light or dark, make it authentic. Keep learning. And don’t write to be edgy or dark. Just write what you’re happy writing and it will show in your work.

In your opinion, why do you feel people shy away from Dark Erotica/ taboo stories?

Because they’re not as twisted as me? lol! Look, mostly when I ask people that, their reply is pretty consistent: There’s so much depression, darkness, sadness in the world I don’t understand why anyone would read anything ‘dark.’ So while I get that, for me it’s never been the case because I guess darkness has been part of my nature. Even as a kid I used to watch horror movies and read dark books, Bram Stoker or Frankenstein, or Ann Rice books or Stephen King books even if they gave me nightmares lol—and no one knew that I was doing it or they might have stopped me, but I used to be all goth and metal at one point, though I never wore the uniform, but my tastes, a lot of them, are still the same. But there have been changes in my personality over time—for instance I would never in a million years listen to some boy band or whatever and now I feel like I can listen to pretty much ANYTHING though I still truly enjoy the heavier, darker lyrics more.  Same goes for the writing. I read American Psycho and I feel like it changed me, as a person and it was the first book that made me want to become a writer. Same thing with Fight Club. These books changed me forever and I realized there are people who have a dark streak in them, so I felt less alone. I’m still a huge horror nut and yeah, can’t live without dark shit.

We know about Senseless but can you tell us what else you are working on?

Okay for now, I’m about to start working on Senseless 2. (which completes the duology) and after that, I have some WIPs, I’m not sure which one I’m going to tackle first, but there is an MPREG book that I really want to write and a dark, incest work based on “Daddy” but ideas come to me ALL THE TIME so really hard to tell what I might be feeling like writing when I finish writing the sequel to Senseless but I’ll keep you posted!

Who are some of your go to authors that you must one click when they publish?

The ones I keep mentioning! Lol Any Chuck Palaniuk book, Any Bret Easton Ellis book even though he hasn’t written in a while, but from the MM genre, Lisa Henry, JA Rock, Riptide Authors like Rachel and Alex or Heidi. Rodd Clark I’d definitely one-click without thinking twice!

Okay, it’s fast fire question time ready?

Would you rather fly like a bird or swim like a dolphin?
I’m a total water baby. I love being in the water, I love anything related to water so yeah, definitely SWIM.

What do you fear the most?
People. Cause I never know what I’m going to get from them. As a species I find them unpredictable. They will hurt you for no reason at all sometimes, even though you’ve done NOTHING to deserve it. Well, of course they will have a reason for it and it could be anything: the fact that your sexual orientation differs from them, the fact that they live in a different part of the planet than you, the fact that you like a certain kind of music, the fact that you write something they don’t understand or do something they don’t understand. So yeah, my BIGGEST fear is to one day wake up in Leatherface’s lair. Though my masochistic tendencies mean that I might actually enjoy it as much as I’ll fear it lol That said, there are some people in this world who will do everything in their power to make you happy, to help you, to support you and they will love you, unconditionally, deeply with a passion that will surprise you. I guess so long as you have even a handful or even ONE or two of these, the whole getting slayed in a psycho killer’s lair doesn’t sound so horrible.

Favorite color?
As a previous goth kid I’m tempted to say black lol but honestly I’m through with the whole ‘favorite colors’ phase. Now, I like to try different stuff.

Favorite time of day?
Evening/night. Definitely not a morning person! Or even an afternoon person!

Coffee or tea?
I honestly cannot live without either.

Pepsi or Coke?
COKE all the way baby!!!! lol

Toilet paper: over or under?
LOL!!! I have a lot of OCD’s but thankfully not this one. But OVER.

Oreos or chocolate chip cookies?
CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES! The chewy ones! lol

Kindle, Nook, or paperback?
Paperback lol and iPad

Favorite movie?
There can’t be just one! But off the top of my head? Dans la Maison which is based on one of Juan Mayorga’s plays, and both the movie and play, though different in many ways, are my all-time favorites.

Okay, Kol, I’m done torturing you! Thank you immensely for your time and I can’t wait to fall into your books.
Lol Funny that’s usually what I write at the end of my books lol ;) No seriously the questions were truly interesting and I had fun! Thanks for having me Meredith!
