Blurb: Robyn Heath has made a pretty
good life for himself away from Pickleville. He loves his job as a paramedic,
has a best friend who he adores who also happens to be his partner at work, and
he even gets laid every once in a while. Life couldn’t be better. Until the man
who broke his heart comes back into town.
"Jaron, you remember me talking about Mike," Robyn
said.
"Of course. Glad you could come spend time with us and
glad to finally meet you," Jaron said with a smile. "I'll be right
back. Just have to make sure the old granny here makes it back down the path
okay."
"Old granny. I can still whoop your butt." In the
last few years, Gloria had taken a sudden decline in health. Robyn knew it was
mostly due to some type of rare arthritis. She still managed to get around well
enough and walked everywhere she went. She had said to Robyn that if she stayed
still and stopped exercising, then she might as well just die. Robyn had to
agree. Moving through her pain was probably the best thing for her to do.
Jaron took his mother's arm as he turned around and led her
back the way she had just come with Mike.
"Yeah, I probably should have, but I really needed to
get away. It's okay that we stay for a while, right?"
"Of course."
Mike eyed him then. "What's wrong? And don't tell me
nothing. I'm your best friend. I can tell something is wrong."
Robyn leaned in. "Caden is here," Robyn whispered.
Alexis wriggled around in his hip so he put her down. He watched was she
toddled herself across the field and right into the middle of the game.
Everyone stopped what they were doing the second she got out there. She walked
right up to Neil and put her hands up. Alexis loved Neil more than anyone and
stuck to him like glue whenever she was around him.
Neil picked her up and she stuck her thumb in her mouth and
laid her head on Neil's shoulder, as he carried her across the field. He sat in
the chair next to Owen, Alexis on his lap.
"I think she likes him more than she likes me and I'm
her father," Mike said with a smirk. He grabbed Robyn's elbow. "Now,
which one is he?"
"Tallest guy on the field. Blond. Looks a lot like Thor
from that movie," Robyn had his back to the game now and he watched Mike's
face as he spotted Caden.
"Damn, I'm straight and even I would hit that," Mike
said.
Robyn slapped him on the arm. "So not helping."
"I can't believe you dated Thor, man. That's
impressive. Shit, he's coming over," Mike whispered to him.
Caden came up behind Robyn and ran a hand up the span of his
back. Robyn turned to him and glared, taking a step forward towards Mike so
that he'd get away from Caden. If Caden touched him like that for too long
Robyn's heart would cave in on itself. It would be trapped behind rubble
forever.
Living
in Southwest Michigan, April resides with her husband and two kids. She has been an avid reader for several
years. Writing her first story at the
age of ten, the characters in her head still won't stop telling their
stories. If April isn't reading or
writing she can be found outside playing with the animals or taking a long walk
in the woods.
