BLURB: Dustin Hurst and Nathaniel Schmitt were happy when Nathaniel’s sister Natalie agreed to be their surrogate.  Both men were elated finding out that she was pregnant with twins.  Their dreams of becoming parents finally coming true, until one day, Natalie goes into preterm labor.

Diana and Niles Hurst-Schmitt enter the world over two months premature. Immediately they’re transported to a nearby children’s hospital where doctors soon discover both twins have life threatening complications requiring surgical intervention.

During their children’s hospitalization, Dustin and Nathaniel grow fond of the many talented healthcare professionals working to heal their newborns, including the attractive dietitian Matt Bachmeier.  They think it’s only a matter of time before their babies are well enough to come home. Unfortunately, fate has other plans for the tiny infants resulting in Dustin and Nathaniel unexpectedly embarking on a terrifying journey witnessing their children fighting for their lives.

As their medical crisis continues to unfold, Dustin and Nathaniel pray for a miracle their family so desperately needs.

Excerpt

“I don’t have a baker for tomorrow morning.” Nathaniel reached inside his coat pocket for his cellphone.  “I’m going to ask Mama if she could help.”

Dustin glanced at Nathaniel.

“It’s 1:30 in the morning.  I’m sure Marie is asleep.”

Nathaniel shook his head, his trembling hands making it difficult for him to punch the speed dial button.

“Who else can I ask?” Nathaniel put the receiver to his ear.  “My other staff is just part-time assistants, not trained professionals.  They couldn’t decipher the recipes or handle the volume of pastries needed for the morning rush.  Mama is the only person who could step into Natalie’s shoes without any problems.” After several rings, his mother answered.  “Mama, it’s Nathaniel.” Nathaniel fidgeted. “I’m sorry for calling so late, but I have a dilemma. Natalie was admitted to the hospital earlier and gave birth to the twins.  Don’t worry, she’s fine, but they were transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Oakhill.  Dustin and I are heading there now.” Nathaniel felt a sharp pain in his stomach. His hands were shaking. “Mama, I’m sorry I woke you up, but I’m in such a predicament.  You’re the first person I—”

“Breathe, Nathaniel.  Everything is going to be fine.” Marie sounded so clear and coherent, not at all sleepy. Nathaniel wondered if his mama had been up waiting for his call. She continued.  “Ray called Papa and me after he got her to the Emergency Room.  I thought you might be calling me asking for my help.  Don’t worry, I’ll take care of the bakery. Remember, I taught Natalie Marie everything she knows. I come from a long line of accomplished bakers. When I go in tomorrow, customers and staff will think it’s just another routine morning at Aunt Millie’s Bakery, I promise.”

Nathaniel sighed, collapsing back in his seat. “Thank you, Mama. You’ve really helped me out of a horrible predicament.”

“This is what mothers do for their children.” She paused.  “I’d do anything for you.  Just like I would for any of your brothers and sisters.  You kids are my greatest contributions to this world.” Then her tone changed to one containing a hint of humor. “I’m going to let you go.  After all, I’ve got to get up in a couple hours to get to my new job.  And don’t worry, Mama Schmitt is coming out of retirement.”

Nathaniel laughed, surprising himself.

“Thank you, Mama. You’re the best!”

“No problem.  Tell Dustin to drive carefully.  I don’t want to visit your whole family in the hospital.”

Nathaniel chuckled.

“Papa and my prayers are with all of you.  I love you, son.  Take care.” Then Marie ended their call.

Nathaniel turned to Dustin.

“Please hurry.  Our babies need us.”

“I’m already driving ten miles over the speed limit.” Dustin placed one hand on Nathaniel’s thigh.  “We want to get to the hospital in one piece.

I just want to start out by saying this is book two on the Innkeeper Series by Derrick Knight. When given this ARC I was told it was a standalone but I have to say I disagree. After reading it I truly believe this needs to be read after book one. There were times I felt disconnected to characters that I think I should have felt connected with. I'm fairly certain book one really dealt with all these characters. So I encourage you read these in order.

Truly a Miracle focuses on Nathaniel and Dustin. They are one couple in a group of couples. I'm guess were introduced in book one. Nathaniel and Dustin are awaiting the arrival of their twin babies that Nathaniel's twin sister is carrying.

Nathaniel has OCD and that in itself is a hurdle and a half. Add the fact his sister goes into premature labor and OH BOY! He tends to think more on the negative side which is very common in those who are OCD.

These twins don't come into the world easy and they have many struggles. Dustin and Nathaniel are awesome parents and work through a lot of issues. And with Matt's help the help their babies thrive.

This book was about so many things but what I took away from it was strength, unity, and family. There's so much love in this book. You get it from all sides and that was fabulous.

LENGTH: 200 Pages

RELEASE DATE: December 5, 2016

BLURB: On a bright autumn day, Flynn Marlowe lost his best friend, a beagle named Barley, while out on a hike in Seattle’s Discovery Park.

On a cold winter day, Mac Bowersox found his best friend, a lost, scared, and emaciated beagle, on the streets of Seattle.

Two men. One dog. When Flynn and Mac meet by chance in a park later that summer, there’s a problem: who does Barley really belong to? Flynn wants him back, but he can see that Mac rescued him and loves him just as much as he does. Mac wants to keep the dog, and he can imagine how heartbreaking losing him would be—but that’s just what Flynn experienced.

A “shared custody” compromise might be just the way to work things out. But will the arrangement be successful? Mac and Flynn are willing to try it—and along the way, they just might fall in love.

Excerpt

Mac turned back, his hands up like the criminal he felt he was. “What do you want?” he whined. He wished they’d just go away. But he was resigned to the fact that they weren’t going anywhere and that he’d have to deal with this situation with Hamburger sooner or later, whether he liked it or not, for better or for worse. Even if dealing with it meant his own heart would be ripped in two.

Clara said, “We just want to take a look at the dog. That’s all. I can give a second opinion. I know Flynn’s dog Barley very well. And maybe he’s wrong. We’re prepared for that. But he’s missed his little guy so much, maybe there’s just some wishful thinking happening on Flynn’s part. That would be understandable. I assume you’re headed home?”

Mac nodded, feeling like he was backing up to a precipice. He didn’t know which footstep would send him hurtling over the edge. “Yeah,” he said, a little out of breath. “I rent a room in a house on Green Lake Way.” He closed his eyes. He felt as though the couple were staring at him. Well, of course they were staring, but staring with dislike, disgust, whatever. And maybe all that was just Mac himself, projecting his own feelings of self-loathing.

He looked to the guy, Flynn, he’d encountered the other day on the trail. Their eyes met, and Mac noticed how the guy had a little chip missing out of his front tooth. It was an odd time to take note of such a thing, but it made Mac feel better. The guy had seemed so perfect, all Irish black hair and blue eyes, the body of an Adonis, dimples, everything. The flaw humanized him and, in a way, made him sexier.

Why are you even thinking such a thing? Mac yelled at himself on the inside. The dude’s obviously here with his girlfriend. He felt bad all over again about deceiving him. Mac wasn’t ready to tell them the truth about Hamburger—he just couldn’t bear the thought of it, because surely that would be the end of his relationship with the dog, and sometimes Mac thought he loved that creature more than he loved himself—he could at least own up to some of his own truth.

“Your name’s Flynn, isn’t it?”

The guy nodded, and his eyebrows came together in obvious confusion. “Mike, right?”

Flynn peered at him suspiciously, and Mac realized he probably had never believed any of what he’d told him. Mac had always had a terrible face for lying. Every emotion was always cast there in sharp relief. It was both his blessing and his curse.

“No,” Mac mumbled. “My name’s Mac. Mac Bowersox.” He scraped the toe of his Converse on the sidewalk. “Maybe you misheard me. Mac, Mike, Max….”

“Sure,” Flynn said stiffly. “Are you gonna let us come and see the dog or not?’

Do I have a choice? Mac wondered. Of course he did. One always had a choice. He could be an asshole and simply refuse. Stand his ground. Try to be a baby and just run from them again. He shook his head. “The house is, uh, just around the corner down here.” He gestured toward Green Lake, which shimmered innocently in the summer sun just below them. Mac thought there should be storm clouds gathering above the water. He turned away from Flynn and Clara, trying to mentally prepare himself for what was to come.

This book had so many things I love. There was a grown woman who loved to eat, dogs, grandmas, a gingerman, you know the important things.

Barley is a beagle and oddly he has two men who love him so very much. Both coming into his life at different times. It’s because of the boisterous beagle that Flynn meets Mac and so a love story begins.

I’m not familiar with Seattle, never been. So I always love when I read a Rick Reed book and he takes us there. I wonder if these places are real or fictitious and inevitably I always want to go visit them. I loved hearing Mac’s stories of when he was a kid and the many books he’s read. I took notes on a few so I could go find them and read them.

Flynn and Mac’s love connection is a very very very slow burn. They actually don’t have a lot of page time together. Flynn is sort of a loner. He has Barley and his best friend Clara but that’s it. Mac becomes a love for Flynn that he always craved. For a good portion of the book it felt one sided. The love Flynn and Mac have actually doesn’t manifest into anything much until close to the end of the book.

It honestly felt like Mac’s story. Though told in both Mac and Flynn’s POV’s it was Mac’s POV that truly held the story together and was where we often found ourselves getting answers.

I loved the connection that Mac had with so many things. His grandmother, her trailer, dogs in general. He’s truly a kind person and very real. I’ll say that I wasn’t sure I believed in Mac and Flynn’s love and maybe it was because in the end it felt so “all of a sudden” The epilogue answered most of the lingering questions I had except one and it was sort of a big one.

I did like this book a great deal but without getting that answer to that question and feeling a little so so about the love I feel like I’m missing something with it.

Rick Reed is a great author and if you love dogs, conversations about literature, gingermen, and grandmas you’ll truly enjoy this.

BLURB: Caught between two worlds—what’s a merman to do?

The Deep Blue Sea, #2

Marcus Krill, a creature of the sea, is a perfectly content bachelor. Mating someone? No thank you. Living anywhere but in the ocean? Ha! Not happening. Spending more than the barest necessity of time on land? Nope. Not this merman. And humans? They’re perfectly fine as a diversion, but that’s all. They might be interesting, but complications follow them like a hungry shark during a feeding frenzy. So what if he’s a little lonely, a little tired of one-night stands? That doesn’t mean he’s ready to mate.

Blair Estes, a creature of land, is perfectly happy with his nomadic lifestyle. No strings keep him tied to any one place long. Adventure is his lover and adrenaline his master. He loves to travel, and the things he’s seen defy description. Now his wandering has brought him to the Seychelles and a mysterious merman who’s going to take him on the journey of a lifetime.

Excerpt

Hey everyone! My name is M.A. Church, and I’ve dropped by Diverse Reader to talk about my release, Riding the Tide. This is book two in the Deep Blue Sea series.
Marcus Krill, a creature of the sea, is a perfectly content bachelor. Or so he tells himself. Blair Estes, a creature of land, is perfectly happy with his nomadic lifestyle. Now his wandering brings him to the Seychelle islands and a mysterious merman who intrigues him. Fascinated and attractive, Blair accepts a date with Marcus, only to panic later and question the circumstances of how they met. He runs all the way back to the States.
Only then does he examine his actions. Not to mention he simply cannot forget the merman he met. In the harsh light of day, he comes to the conclusion that standing Marcus up for their date was a monumental mistake. Knowing his pride is going to take a hit, he returns to the Seychelle islands and contacts Brett, the owner of the resort where he stayed, and who set up the date for him and Marcus.
Determined to beg if needed, he asks Brett to help him set up another meeting with Marcus, only to be told no one has seen Marcus since Blair fled. In desperation Blair rents a small yacht and sets sail in the vain hope he might run across Marcus. Disheartened and disillusioned, he waits and hopes.
Then fate steps in and grants his wish.

Exclusive Excerpt:
Heartsick and more than a little disgusted with himself, he grabbed his fins and his snorkeling mask. So back into the water he would go in the vain hope that somehow, someway, Marcus would know he was looking for him. He strapped the dive knife to his thigh, put on his mask, and slipped on his fins.
He slipped into the water enjoying the weightlessness. The feeling of helpless excitement as he floated got his heart to thumping. Sunlight filtered through the water, and fish swam around him. He loved this, loved the world underneath the waves, but could he live here? Considering Marcus was the creature of the water, it stood to reason their majority of the time would be spent there. Could he do that? Give up the land?
Maybe.
Trying to live without Marcus left him unhappy. So much so that he not only returned to the islands, but he rented a damn boat and took to the waves in a futile search for his merman. The fish darted playfully around him, then fled.
Their retreat was sharp and abrupt and left him wondering what exactly he did to scare them. From the murky depths something swam toward him, coming fast. Blair’s blood ran cold when he saw what it was. Oh shit! Shit! Tiger shark. He tried not to flail around in the water.
Movement caught their attention, he knew that. As calmly as he could, he tried to surface, even as he kept an eye on the fast-moving object heading his way. Had it seen him? Or had he just happened to be in the way it was swimming? He needed out of the damn water before the shark focused on him.
Just as he thought he had a chance, the shark suddenly jerked his head toward him.
