Synopsis

With the wedding of Jack Frost and Rudy Rein Dear only three weeks away, everyone travels to Jack’s palace in Svalbard, Norway, where the happy couple will exchange vows beneath the northern lights. Festivities have been planned leading up to the wedding, and Dasher eagerly anticipates not just the fun, but staying under the same roof as the blustering winter spirit who’s caught his eye—the King of Frost, Jack’s father.

A long-ago tragedy has left Eirik fearing to ever love again. As the King of Frost, Eirik maintains his distance from everyone, especially the young Christmas elf who insists on intruding on Eirik’s solitude. But Dasher is determined to find a way to show the lonely king that his heart still beats and he shouldn’t fear allowing it to beat for another.

Review

Every Christmas, without fail, one of the things I've looked the most forward to is a new North Pole City story from Charlie Cochet. I read the first one, Mending Noel, years ago and fell completely and utterly in love with everything about it. The setting (omg, it's the most imaginatively brilliant EVER), the characters, the writing ... just everything. From Rudy, the captain of the Rein Dear's, to the King of Frost, to Mayor Kringle himself, it's all just so wonderfully special, so to say I was both excited and dreading this final installment is a bit of an understatement, but The King's Courage is a spectacular send off.

The King of Frost, and father to Jack Frost, King Eirik, has been a bitter, heartbroken man ever since his beloved wife was murdered in the Frost War many, many years ago. Snarly and aloof and well, cold, Eirik has held himself away from all around him, including his own son. With Jack's wedding to Rudy Rein Dear fast approaching, he finds his castle overrun with joyous people wishing to celebrate love and marriage. Since Rudy is  well-loved among his Rein Dear brethren, all are in attendance for the lead-up to the wedding to end all weddings. There are parties and dances and banquets planned and while Eirik is happy for his son, all the hoopla is a bit much for him and he has every intention of staying as far as possible from all of it. Especially from Dasher, who seems to have made it his mission to annoy the King to no end.

You guys, I can't even begin to tell you how ridiculously fun it was to watch the King and Dasher snark and flirt. This is a standalone, BUT, you miss some of the background and build-up by not reading the previous books so you don't get the full importance of the King laughing and playing. I'll be honest, it made me tear up a little. This series, from beginning to end, is magical. What else could it be? If you're needing a break from the Christmas chaos, if you're wanting to snuggle on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa by the fire with the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree all around you, if you want to escape and laugh and smile and yes, swoon because there's lots of romance going on, then pick up all of the books in the series and read them all. Better yet, just in time and to make things easier, Dreamspinner Press has bundled them all together in paperback (I can't wait for mine to arrive!). But seriously, if you haven't checked this series out, fix that immediately. Everyone needs some Jack, Rudy, Vixen, Cupid, and all the rest in their lives. You'll be SO happy you did!
