Synopsis

I can make it by myself. The only rules I follow are my own. Love? I learned that lesson the hard and painful way it wasn’t right for me. Sure, sometimes it gets lonely and I wish I had a man to hold. Who’d love me. Want me. Treat me with respect. Yeah, I dance in a club but that doesn’t mean I’m easy. Or a fool. So you, sitting in the back, watching me? I know what you want. You want me. In your bed. Under you. But I say no. It doesn’t matter how many presents you give me.
I’m not falling for you. I know who you are. But you don’t know me. You don’t know Austin.
This is a 14,000 word CLIFFHANGER story. It is a start to a new series, entitled Man Up. The followup book, Rhoades-Undeniable will be released a week after Austin.

Review

First books of new series can be scary  The author needs to introduce you to the main characters and build the world they occupy, and make the reader want to come back for more.  Throw in the fact that the first book is a novella, meaning there are fewer pages to “world build”, and the prospect becomes daunting.  It’s very easy for things to go off the rails very quickly.

Thankfully, that’s not a problem here.  While a relatively short read when compared to her other books, Felice Stevens has done a fantastic job of introducing you to the world the title character, Austin, occupies.  She also gives you just enough information to make you wonder what’s going on with the minor characters and hope they get their own stories (I’m looking at you, Frankie.  There’s somethin’ up there).

“Austin” is also told in first-person, which I believe is a first for Felice.  I love this style because it puts the reader front and center with the main characters instead of feeling like you’re simply observing.  I’m hoping she continues to use this style throughout the rest of the series.

It’s a foregone conclusion that I’ll be reading the rest of the series, and can’t wait for the next installment.
