Lassiter is one of those
Windsor’s—the ones that basically founded the town that surrounded their
sprawling ranch in Wyoming. The resort/working farm hires many seasonal workers
and this summer it would be home to Marco Terlizzese—a friend of Las’ from
college—well a crush from college, actually. But even though Las may have given
in to the demanding need to see Marco over the summer, he refuses to break his
golden rule—no dating the summer help—not since his best friend and former
boyfriend had left him to pursue university and life across the pond. It had
broken his heart when Ben had left him without explanation and since then Las
is determined to guard his heart and that means no messing around with Marco
during the summer even if he more than likes the guy. The problem is someone
forgot to tell that to Las’ heart.
Marco is adrift after graduation and a summer on the ranch
for the slightly introverted hockey player seems ideal. His parents want him to
become professional but Marco isn’t so sure that’s what he wants nor does he
think he’s good enough to make the cut. Marco isn’t sure what he wants to do
with his life—he just knows that he’d like it a lot if Las were involved in it.
But despite his resolve not to flirt or push Las, being out on the ranch with
him does things to Marco that make him want the guy even more. Not only that
but there are times when he can imagine staying in Wyoming and never going home
to the east coast to live.
Amy Aislin gives us a sweet new adult romance with the
release of Home for a Cowboy. Set in
beautiful Wyoming, the story is a low angst, slow burn romance—even though it
takes place in a two month time frame. The way this author writes makes you
feel as though you know the characters inside out and so the relationship that
exists and continues to develop between Marco and Las feels gradual despite the
fact that little time really passes. Marco is just so cute—from the manuals he
buys in order to learn the flora and fauna and wildlife he might encounter on
the trail hikes he will guide on the ranch to the enthusiasm and awe he has for
each new experience with Las, it is difficult not to fall in love with the guy.
You can see why Las is so affected by him and his obvious love for the land
that Las cherishes himself.
Las, on the other hand, is a bit frustrating to me. Because
of his insistence to wait for the perfect long term relationship to drop in his
lap before ever considering becoming emotionally involved with someone, he
sometimes sounded a little whiny and like a broken record—always insisting he
would never consider Marco as anything other than a friend since the guy was
slated to leave at the end of the summer. Thankfully he sees the light and
honestly the way in which he exposes Marco to so much beauty around them is
lovely to read about.
Home for a Cowboy
is that rare type of novel where big moments don’t have to really happen in
order for the book to be an entertaining and beautiful experience. Instead the
descriptive passages about the countryside and the well-rounded characters were
more than enough to keep me enthralled and enchanted.
Excerpt
Tracing the Little Dipper with his eyes, he
hugged his arms to himself, chasing off a chilled breeze that snuck under his
hoodie despite the fire, and comforted himself with the possibility that maybe
Las was at home right now, wherever home was, gazing out his bedroom window, or
perhaps lying on his back on top of a sleeping bag next to his tent, blinking
up at the same stars as Marco.
And on Marco’s face, a slack jaw, wide
eyes, open staring. “How is this real?” His tone was reverent.
“It’s even better at sunset.” Las kept his
voice just as soft. “The sun goes down right over there, behind that mountain.”
He let a smile curl his lips. “But if we came at sunset we’d be walking back in
the dark and I remember a certain someone is afraid of what lurks in the dark.”
Marco did a slow pan toward him. “I don’t
know what you’re talking about.”
If Las’s mountains and stars couldn’t
convince Marco to stay, he wasn’t sure anything could. Las would keep losing
tiny parts of himself to Marco until he didn’t have anything left to give.
It would be worth it. Marco was worth much
more than a broken heart.
