When all seemed lost, the budding wordsmith is saved—in more than one sense—by Khalid Novak, a lifeguard at the lodge’s pool. Khalid is two years older, a bit more sophisticated, and the most incredibly alluring thing Dane has ever seen. The two young men find themselves joyously wound in a searing romance that teaches Dane that love can be wildly intense yet fleeting so one should revel in it when the discovery is made.
Can this summer romance survive the chill of autumn as well as the winds of time?
Review
Ever start reading a
story and think to yourself this reminds me of a movie, play, or even a song?
That was my first impression of V.L. Locey’s book Shake The Stars.
Not to say that this book was a copy by any means just had a similar feel to
it. Honestly, the theme is what got my attention going with this story.
Picture it- you have
just graduated high school and in the fall you will finally be leaving home for
the first time and discovering the person you have always known you were but
never felt comfortable being in the comfort of your parents’ house. Now imagine
feeling guilty over your dream vacation that you have been saving and planning because
you had to attend the family summer vacation in a place that once was cool back
before you were even born. The Era in which things such as the internet and
cell phones did not exist, and when the coolest people that had entertained at
this lodging had been celebrities such as Don Rickles and Foster Brooks facts
that Dane actually had to look up as his mother and father went on about how
great this place was. His summer looked bleak and to top it off he would be
sharing a tiny room with his brother who snored so loud that Dane was forced to
take his mattress outside to get a good night's sleep.
Dane never had been the
social outgoing type of person; writing is what he loved to do. So, to make the
best of this god awful trip, he took to sitting outside and then it happened.
He saw him in the water, watched as he laid his blanket down and prayed. Dane
was fixated on that beautiful man. The one true person that could possibly make
this vacation unforgettable.
Khalid Novak was used to
the stares and rude remarks about his Muslim heritage. Not that it didn't
bother him but he chooses to ignore the ignorance and work at the lodge until
going back to complete his last two years of college. His life wasn't all that
bad, after coming out as gay he lost some family, was ridiculed by his
grandfather every chance he was around the man, but his loving parents supported
him even if his sexuality went against some of the Muslim teachings. Khalid
still kept a hold of his faith and after meeting Dane was opened to a committed
relationship with him even after summer's end.
However, tragedy strikes
making their newly found love tested not only with distance, time, lack of
communication but trust. Soon the two part on the worst and most devastating of
terms.
Present day ten years
later fate brings them back together, both have matured and faced heartbreak
and devastation in the last ten years. Whoever said that second chances were
rainbows and butterflies? Regardless, of all the obstacles that challenged
these two remarkable men the passion and determination within these two
characters is what made this story both delightful and heartbreaking at times.
An amazing read!
V.L. Locey loves worn jeans, yoga, belly laughs, walking, reading and writing lusty tales, Greek mythology, Torchwood and Dr. Who, the New York Rangers, comic books, and coffee. (Not necessarily in that order.) She shares her life with her husband, her daughter, one dog, two cats, a pair of geese, far too many chickens, and two steers.
When not writing spicy romances, she enjoys spending her day with her menagerie in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania with a cup of fresh java in one hand and a steamy romance novel in the other.
