I admit it…
I love Christmas stories. Bring on the over the top sweet and fluff and wrap me
up in a warm blanket with some hot chocolate and a fire with Christmas music
playing in the background. You know all they typical tropes and clichés from
every Hallmark movie ever. I love it all and I’m not afraid to admit it. I also
have to admit being a tad surprised when I found out Garrett Leigh was writing
a Christmas book. Oh it’s not because she’s not wholly capable. But let’s be
honest and say light and sweet are not what most think of when you mention Garrett
Leigh! I will also say that Hometown Christmas was everything you’d
expect from her, and also a whole lot more.
Yani and
Gavin meet while working at a homeless shelter. Well Gavin works there as the
night supervisor while Yani is a mostly unwilling volunteer thanks to some
guilting and begging from his best friend, Bex. Yani is a chef and his skills
get called upon to help feed the homeless that frequent the shelter. Gavin is
an extra-special forces soldier who is back home after an injury ended his military
career. The PTSD he suffers from as a result from his service makes it
difficult for him to get close to anyone, until of course he and Yani cross
paths. Their immediate connection is intense and the chemistry between the two
leaps off the page, but it feels authentic and genuine and not the least bit
forced. Gavin’s calm demeanor soothes Yani's OCD tendencies and Yani brings a
bit of light and joy to Gavin’s normally mundane and serious life. I really
enjoyed the slow burn romance between these two!
Though Leigh
touches on some serious subjects throughout Hometown Christmas,
there is plenty of hope and warmth to put you in the holiday spirit. The
wonderful cameos by Nat and Mark and Connor and Jamie didn’t hurt either! And
don’t let me forget to mention the food! So much food, and it’s all described
in Garrett’s trademark way that’s never too much but the perfect amount to
convey her obvious love of cooking. I highly recommend checking out Hometown
Christmas. It’s the perfect blend of swoony and romantic and it will
surely put you in the mood for the holidays!
