Synopsis
Brian
You’ll make it out of here, Brian. I swear.
I had everything—school quarterback, popular with girls, and my dad was proud of me. I told myself it didn’t matter no one knew the real me. And then I nearly died. Landon saved my life. He’s the bravest guy I know. He came out a few years ago, proud and fierce, and he ran into gunfire to help others. Me, I’m a mess. Can’t even stand to be in a room with the curtains open. But here’s the thing about losing it all: You get a chance to start over and be someone new. Only how can I move on when the two shooters who attacked our school were never caught? And why do I feel like I’m still in the crosshairs?
Landon
Will you kiss me?
When I came across Brian Marshall, the hottest guy in school, dying on the cafeteria floor, I did what anyone would do. I tried to save him. His request surprised me, but I figured he needed comfort, so I kissed him on the forehead. When he survived and came back to school, he was broken in body and mind. He still needed me, and soon we were unlikely besties. But what I saw at school that day woke me up. I want to demand action on gun control, lead protests, raise my fist. I’ll tear the world down if I have to. And if I can get the man of my dreams and save the world at the same time? I’ll take it. Only I didn’t understand that the horror at Jefferson Waller High wasn’t over.
Review
I thought I knew what I was getting into when I read the blurb for
Boy Shattered. I was so wrong, this book was more than I could have
imagined.
How do you think you would respond to
an active shooter situation? Would you run towards or away from danger,
would you hide, pray, freeze or simply lay down and cry? I don’t think
any of us can answer this question, how would we know what we’d do. We
all hope we would help others, try and stop the attack, but the truth
is...most of us wouldn’t. Brian is the quarterback of the football team,
he is handsome and popular...he seems to have the perfect life. When
two gunmen attack his school, Brian is shot and lays dying. He’s
thinking of all the life he has ahead of him and of the day he’d finally
get to be his true self. Instead of the future he imagined, he’s going
to die on the lunchroom floor. Then comes Landon, an openly gay and
proud senior. Brian and Landon aren’t friends, but they’re aware of each
other. Landon does everything he can to save Brian and he knows it may
not be enough. Nothing could shock him more than when Brian asks him for
a kiss. Thinking he just needs comfort, Landon offers a sweet kiss on
the forehead. With Landon literally holding him together till help
arrives, Brian survives. His physical injuries are bad, life threatening
really. As his body begins to heal, his head and heart do not. Brian
and Landon become friends, Landon is Brian’s safe space. Landon response
to the violence is to take action and push for gun control. Brian is
just going through the motions, he’s afraid it’s not over. That the
shooters will return, but lightning never strikes twice...right?
This
book spoke to me as a mother, grandmother, and as an American citizen.
It shows the aftermath these kids go through when the cameras and grief
counseling goes away. It was physically painful reading the scenes
involving the shooting at the school. I have been filled with such hope
since The Parkland students have made a stand for change. These kids,
kids like the Landon’s and Brian’s will be the change we need. I believe
this and am so glad the author brings up these students, not by name,
but reminds us of what they went through. We can’t forget and we need to
help them. I came away inspired and fired up even more to make a better
world for our kids. I’m so glad this story was told and it’s one that I
hope everyone will read.
This is an amazing book!!
