What does this genre mean to me?

Love, acceptance, and freedom to be yourself. That’s just a few of the reasons I love this community. I’ve made so many great friends through the years—people who had been there for me at some of the most horrible time ever. There have been good times and bad, but watching people in this community pull together to help is a beautiful thing. It’s something the world, as a whole, need to take lessons on. Especially in this political climate.

What does this genre mean to me?

My lord, this m/m genre, its community—all the authors, readers, reviewers, photographers, cover artist, editors—they’re a mad bunch! Always ready to talk, to goof off, to get downright serious, share highs, lows, loves, and laughs, not to mention the politics! And that energy injects itself into the writing: you feel it, that spark that wants to carry on sharing those highs, lows, loves, and laughs all over again until it spills onto the page.

I write to get that darkness v lighter shade of life down on paper, and I write very, very dark, but those feelings are molded from being part of a community who are, well—always there to talk, to goof off, to get downright serious, share highs, lows, loves, and laughs. It takes away the bad that can drag you down at times, but then they’re a caring, softhearted bunch too.

What does this genre mean to me?

We live in a world where discrimination and violence against the LGBT community is still, even in this age of information, a daily occurrence. It’s uplifting to be part of a community where diversity is encouraged and celebrated. I’m moved by the growing number of people who are captivated by stories of LGBTQI+ couples (and beyond) sharing adventures, facing down bigotry, bolstering each other through thick and thin, stumbling through life, and finding love. As a writer of M/M romance, I like to think I’m contributing in some small way toward helping people open their minds and their hearts to the reality of same sex attraction, tenderness, and devotion.

What does this genre mean to me?

When I was a baby queer (way back in the day) the only LGBTQ+ characters I ever found in books were the villains, or dead by the end of the story—and even those weren’t easy to find. The simple fact that LGBTQ+ fiction has grown to include stories with happy endings for everyone under the rainbow makes me ridiculously happy. That would be enough, but finding a place where me and my odd characters and stories are accepted—where I can hang out with other LGBTQ+ authors, editors, artists, and allies—that means the world to me. It took half a lifetime, but I’ve finally found my tribe and I love you all.

What does this genre mean to me?

I find this community to be a lot like a family. Families fight. Families love each other. Families don’t always see things exactly the same way. Uncle Fred may love bright Hawaiian shirts while others find them gauche. But because we share common goals and affection for one another we somehow push through and reconnect. I know so many of my friends in the LGBT community are terrified by the recent election. It is scary. We made so much progress and now it feels like ten steps back. But that’s how life is sometimes, and so long as we hold our ground, we’ll move forward again. Let’s lock arms and stand firm. Let’s not back down. Because I may not love Uncle Fred’s shirt, but I sure do love Uncle Fred.

What does this genre mean to me?

I never thought I’d write in the MM Romance genre when I started writing. In fact, I didn’t know there WAS such a thing, but since I’ve discovered it, I haven’t looked back. I’ve become closer to the community and myself over the past few years, learning much about both. I’ve been so happy to be part of it all. I’ve contributed where I can, including the Love Is Love poetry anthology to help the Orlando Night Club victims. That tragedy hit too close to home, as one of my friends in Orlando personally knew several of the victims, as he lives in that area. The shooting shook me up, but also made me proud to be a part of something bigger than myself. Even if it is in a small way, I’m thrilled to be able to share the love, and to do it by focusing on what I love doing best. #LoveIsLove

What does this genre mean to me?

I stumbled into this genre and community almost by accident and it has completely changed my life. For me it's reinforced the old adage that everything happens for a reason and exactly when it's meant to. What I needed was somewhere to feel safe and accepted, supported, be able to talk and learn about things that I was interested in and passionate about. I found all this in spades and I believe I've found my people. There is so much love and support it restores my faith in humanity on a daily basis.

What does this genre mean to me?

LGBT+ Romance is special to me. I see it as a diverse platform that offers interesting sub-genres and various points of view. I appreciate that some books in this genre are politically engaged and carry important social messages. Above all, though, romance focuses on the intricacies of human nature, which is a subject that fascinates me. Reading and writing sex comes as an added bonus.

Having been asked, “What the hell made you interested in romance?” on numerous occasions by people who wrinkle their noses in distaste at the last word, it feels good to share a connection with the community. I’ve encountered many creative, like-minded people amongst the readers, bloggers and authors. I’ve found friends to discuss books with. A special few have become, in fact, a part of my daily existence. And for all that, I’m grateful.

What does this genre mean to me?

I feel so incredibly lucky to have found the m/m genre and community of writers and readers.  I have been involved for less than a year, and in that time I have read some stunning books and short stories, met some amazing people both on and off line, and found endless support when I’ve needed it. Like any family there are ups and downs, but at the heart of it there are fabulous, talented people who are witty, warm, welcoming and caring. People who will give you their time, expertise and a virtual hug whenever you need it. People who don’t care what colour of the rainbow you are, just what you bring and that you care and share in return. It’s like being in the best gang in the world!

What does this genre mean to me?

I first started writing MM because I found the genre satisfying. No unexpected pregnancies! And who wouldn’t love boys kissing boys? As it turned out, too many. I’m about the most clueless person you could hope to meet. Back in the day, I had no idea same-sex marriage wasn’t allowed. (Why not? Who was it hurting?) I thought some religions (not all, I’m not that clueless) were more welcoming to the gay community. Learning how much hostility these men and women faced, and still face, simply because of the person they loved, is very disheartening. The MM writing community has welcomed me (a straight, white woman) and given me the opportunity to share my stories. If anything I write can bring pleasure or even enlightenment, (one can but dream) I’ll feel I’ve repaid them in some measure.
