Brewer: Determined to make his first Christmas with his new boyfriend magazine-perfect, Marcus seeks the advice of lovable busy bodies, the Do-Nothings Club. Killian B. Brewer lives in his life-long home of Georgia with his partner and their dog. He has written poetry and short fiction since he was knee-high to a grasshopper. Brewer earned a BA in English and does not use this degree in his job in the banking industry. He has a love of greasy diner food that borders on obsessive. Lunch with the Do-Nothings at the Tammy Dinette was published in January, 2017. His debut novel, The Rules of Ever After, is available from Duet Books, the young adult imprint of Interlude Press.

True North by Pene Henson: Shay Allen returns to her hometown in Montana for the holidays with her best friend Devon with the intent to return home to L.A. by New Year’s Eve. Instead, the weather traps them in the small town, but the there’s a bright spot: her old crush Milla is still in town.

Pene Henson has gone from British boarding schools to New York City law firms. She now lives in Sydney, Australia, where she is an intellectual property lawyer and published poet who is deeply immersed in the city’s LGBTQIA community. She spends her spare time enjoying the outdoors and gazing at the ocean with her gorgeous wife and two unexpectedly exceptional sons. Her first novel Into the Blue (Interlude Press, 2016) received a Lambda Literary Award for Gay Romance. Her second novel, Storm Season, was published by Interlude Press in 2017.

Last Call at the Casa Blanca Bar & Grille by Erin Finnegan: As the one-year anniversary of his lover’s death rolls around on Christmas, Jack Volarde finds himself at their old haunt—a bar called the Casa Blanca, where a new bartender helps him open up about loss, and see brightness in a future that had grown dim.

Her novel Luchador was named one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of 2016, and along with her 2014 debut novel, Sotto Voce, received both a Foreword Reviews INDIES Book of the Year award and a PW starred review.

Halfway Home by Lilah Suzanne: Avery Puckett has begun to wonder if her life has become joyless. One night, fate intervenes in the form of a scraggly dog shivering and alone in a parking lot. Avery takes him to a nearby shelter called Halfway Home where she meets bright and beautiful Grace, who is determined to save the world one stray at a time.

Lilah Suzanne has been writing actively since the sixth grade, when a literary magazine published her essay about an uncle who lost his life to AIDS. A freelance writer from North Carolina, she spends most of her time behind a computer screen, but on the rare occasion she ventures outside she enjoys museums, libraries, live concerts, and quiet walks in the woods. Lilah is the author of the Interlude Press books Spice, Pivot and Slip, and the Amazon bestselling Spotlight series: Broken Records, Burning Tracks and Blended Notes.

Shelved by Lynn Charles: When library clerk Karina Ness meets a new patron, lonely business owner, Wesley Lloyd, she puts her own love life on hold and begins a holiday matchmaking mission to connect Wes with her uncle Tony.

Lynn Charles’ love of writing dates to her childhood, when thoughts, dreams, frustrations, and joys poured onto the pages of journals and diaries. She lives in Central Ohio with her husband and adult children where a blind dog and his guardian cat rule the roost. When she’s not writing, Lynn can be found planning a trip to New York or strolling its streets daydreaming about retirement. Her novel Black Dust (2016) was named a finalist for a Foreword Reviews INDIES Book of the Year award. Her other novels include Beneath the Stars (2017) and Chef’s Table (2014).

Review

Every year I look forward to holiday stories. Christmas, Hanukkah, winter solstice ... the particulars don't matter because it's the spirit of the season that warms my heart. The sense of hope and love and joy always leaves a smile on my face and reminds why this is such a special time of year. When those stories are full of diverse characters, plots that are unique, and settings I've not read a million times before it's even better. I knew the If the Fates Allow anthology from Interlude Press would be excellent and I'm so happy to say I wasn't wrong.

I'm not going to review each story individually because as a whole, the entire thing is wonderful. Each story is unique, each one brings something different. Whether it's the humor and nostalgia in Gracious Living Says It Has to Be a Live Tree (some title, huh?!) by Killian B. Brewer or tons of heart and feel good vibes in True North by Pene Henson, you'll find something to connect to in each story. Perhaps you like your holiday stories with a bit of a magic to them, the kind with that sense of something bigger going on? If so, you're definitely going to enjoy Last Call at the Casa Blanca Bar & Grille by Erin Finnegan. This one will definitely hit your feels and leave you with that warm, fuzzy feeling that sticks with you for a long time. If you're like me, you are a sucker for those stories where people find love in the most expected places. If that kind of thing pushes your buttons, you'll for sure want to check out Shelved by Lynn Charles. This one was all kinds of sweet and romantic. And then there's Halfway Home by Lilah Suzanne where a scraggly dog without a home helps Avery find out there's more to life than just going through the motions.

Truly you guys, this anthology is one great story after another. They're each unique in a wonderful way and will leave you feeling like you just had a cup of yummy hot cocoa, snuggled under your favorite blanket while sitting in front of the fire. These stories will put you in the Christmas mood for sure. Be sure to check them out and be prepared to revel in the holiday spirit!

EMBRACING THE CURMUDGEON

By Erin Finnegan

One of the earliest trade reviews of If the Fates Allow described Jack Volarde, the protagonist in Last Call at the Casa Blanca Bar & Grille, as a “curmudgeon.”

I balked at first. It’s too easy an analogy, especially during the holiday season. Curmudgeons are everywhere this time of year. Think Ebenezer Scrooge, and all of the variations of Christmas cranks he has inspired. The holiday grump is a staple of books, film, and Hallmark holiday marathons.

A season that’s about giving, about putting others first, will inevitably inspire characters who represent a counter-balance to the holiday spirit.

They are as the definition suggests: miserly, crusty, with the temperament of an old man shouting, “Get off my lawn!” Curmudgeons— from Scrooge to Dr. Gregory House, Oscar the Grouch, Fred Sanford, and Katherine in The Taming of the Shrew—appear set in their ways, looking to lock the door on the intrusions of the outside world.

Jack certainly shares some of these characteristics. As Christmas rolls around a year after his lover’s death, he wants to pull a Garbo: He wants to be alone. He rejects invitations to share a holiday meal from colleagues and family under the pretense that he wants to take a day off, watch some basketball, and enjoy a rare day off. In his search for a bar open on Christmas day, he is drawn to his old haunt—a quirky tequila bar in the center of downtown Los Angeles.

Still, I felt scratchy about calling Jack a curmudgeon. He’s driven, not greedy. He’s trying to shut out pain. I could hardly think of him as a crank. But if you scratch beneath the surface of a curmudgeonly character, isn’t there usually something more?

In literary curmudgeon tradition, there is an inevitable moment of inspiration, of seeing the light, showing some heart, and perhaps embracing joy: Scrooge rejects greed, Katherine defends the husband she first fought (There’s an entirely separate discussion to be had about whether Katherine represents strong women or is an anti-feminist treatise, but that’s a discussion for another day.) Even Oscar the Grouch replaced Ernie’s rubber duck when it went missing.

There is another common thread for literary grumps: Underneath the surface of a curmudgeon is usually something deeper. They’re prickly for a reason, and it’s the road from misanthrope to fully realized character that engages us.

As readers, we’re looking for hope.

In Last Call, Jack gets his wake up call from top shelf tequila and a loquacious bartender, who gives him the nudge he needs to open up about grief, and come to terms with his partner’s death. It’s a moment of hope that Jack will get back on his feet, and realize that he no longer needs to shut out the world by diving headlong into his work.

So fine, Publishers Weekly. You win—Jack is a curmudgeon. Because in the finest of curmudgeonly traditions, he represents the hope that we can all change and become better, more fully realized people.

Gracious Living Magazine Says It Has to Be a Live Tree by Killian B. Brewer

Hank ran his hands down Marcus’s back and tucked them into Marcus’s back pockets. He pulled Marcus tight against his body. “So how was it today?”
“It was a good day, Baby.” The warmth of his boyfriend’s body soothed Marcus’s tired muscles, and he relaxed into the embrace. Marcus breathed in deeply at Hank’s collar bone. The smells of the home-cooked food reheating upstairs that lingered in Hank’s cotton shirt mixed with his cologne and filled Marcus with two types of hunger. He satisfied one by turning his face and placing his lips on Hank’s. The other man let out a low hum of pleasure as they kissed. Marcus pulled away slightly and looked into Hank’s eyes. “I’m going to want seconds of that later, but right now I’m starving.”
“Let’s get upstairs and get to rectifying that.” Hank stepped toward the stairs and pulled Marcus along behind him, only letting go of his hand when they reached the narrow stairway and had to ascend single file. “You can tell me all about how the dinner went. Was it a big crowd?”
“Big doesn’t even begin to describe it. I can’t count how many plates I fixed today.” Marcus concentrated on Hank’s backside, which was accented by worn spots on his tight blue jeans, as it bounced up the stairs ahead of him. The sight of Hank’s firm body inches away and the scents of food wafting from the apartment set Marcus’s two hungers warring inside him. As he clomped upward, a loud rumble from his stomach signaled which desire would win this time.
“Was that your stomach?” Hank paused on the stairs and turned to shoot Marcus a concerned look.
“Yeah,” Marcus’s answered as he pushed Hank up the stairs into the apartment, “we need to get some food into me.” Remembering the Do-Nothings admonition not to ruin Hank’s surprise, he added, “I’m so tired I can barely climb these stairs. I don’t think I can cook another thing today. Maybe we should just make a frozen pizza.”
Hank spun around and grabbed Marcus by both wrists. Excitement danced in his eyes, and he shook his shoulders. “I’ve got a surprise for you! I made us a whole Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey and everything!” He pulled Marcus into the apartment and gestured toward the folding table beside the kitchenette along the wall of the large, open loft. “You don’t have to cook any more today!”
The table was covered with a russet tablecloth and had orange tapers burning in the center of a spray of autumn leaves and berries. Two plates sat on brown placemats embroidered with yellow leaves that Marcus recognized from Helen’s kitchen table. He was sure the tablecloth, napkins, and centerpiece belonged to the Do-Nothings as well.
“Oh, Hank. It’s beautiful. You shouldn’t have.” Marcus turned and kissed Hank on the cheek. His stomach interrupted the kiss with a loud grumble. “But, clearly, I’m so glad you did.”
“I wanted to make our first Thanksgiving together a special night.” Hank beamed as he stepped over to the counter and pointed out bowls of food arrayed there. “And I made all your favorites. Cathead biscuits. Creamed corn. And look!” Hank picked one bowl and thrust it toward Marcus. “Real mashed potatoes. Not from a box!”

He wants to remember

A young guy wakes in a London park with his memories gone. He has no idea who he is, or where he comes from. A bracelet engraved with the single word Tao is the only clue to his identity. With no sign of his memory returning, he drifts into a life on the streets. Begging is his only way to survive.

Two worlds collide

When Tao returns West’s stolen wallet, West offers to buy him a coffee. Tao delights in the chance to sit down with a good-looking guy until his instincts tell him to run away. Fast. West is surprised when Tao flees, considering how much he’d been mentally urging him to stay. Is he losing his touch or is Tao more than a scruffy young man down on his luck?

Only one way to find out.

Review

I’ve been reading Barbara Elsborg for a while now. I will say of all her books the ones that deal with angels, demons, and fantasy are my favorite. She grasps it like no other I’ve ever read. The emotion is stronger, the plots tighter, the characters are so well written. She guarantees a happy ending but she will convince your heart that you’ll never see it. Making the end of the story that much more outstanding.

In Archangel’s Assassin she plays with our hearts. I cried so hard I couldn’t breathe. I also felt anger, frustration, happiness, and resolution.
West is Archangel Raphael’s assassin. His job is to rid the world of the bad at Raphael’s discretion. He has a list, he follows it, the end. Once he’s done his time he can enter heaven for all eternity.

Tao… okay he broke my soul a few times. He wakes up under a tree in Hyde Park with no memory. He only knows his name because of a bracelet he wore, until it was stolen. He is homeless, foodless, moneyless, and at many times hopeless and lonely. He goes through horrible things and through it all he has this light. Hope. He clings to it even in his darkest moments. I wanted to have his strength. I wept with him and for him.

In Archangel’s Assassin we also have incredible mysteries to unravel. Who is Tao? Where did he come from? And how can he do magic? West, can he play both sides of Heaven and Hell without paying a price? Will he give into loving Tao? What are their fates?

All these questions get answered and then some. You will FEEL this book not just read it. It’s just so freaking brilliant!

BLURB

Rescued from slavers, healer novice Jaime Buchanan finds himself alone and free in Pyrderi, a kingdom of magic, mythical creatures, and a culture as open and kind as his homeland was cruel and close-minded.
Despite his rescue, Jaime is not left without scars, both mental and physical. Traumatized by his experience and hiding his gift, Jaime struggles to earn his place in the kitchens of Angharad Palace, the heart of Taliesin City. His former life as a student of the healing arts leaves him at a disadvantage in the kitchens, and his damaged state is becoming more apparent by the day.
One day, when necessity and fate intervene, Jaime meets someone unexpected—Prince Maxim, youngest son of the Pyrderian king, a sword master and a devastatingly kind man. Unaccustomed to powerful people with compassion and heart, Jaime flees. A cascade of events reveals Jaime’s hidden talents of healing, and he finds himself not in chains, but at the beginning of a new life.
This swift change of fortune opens Jaime up to new possibilities, including a smitten prince who cautiously courts Jaime, easing him away from his fears and reminding him that compassion and love can make him strong. The winter solstice is quickly approaching, and Prince Maxim shows Jaime the enjoyment and excitement to be found in a land that embraces the ice and cold, and the mysteries of all things magical. He learns to see the man under the royal mantle, and Maxim is more than even Jaime suspected.
The winter solstice is nigh when tragedy strikes, and Jaime learns that his past of grief and sorrow can be a pillar of strength for his solstice prince. If there is one thing that Jaime believes above all else, it is in the healing power of love.

Review

I love a good fantasy. I love it even more when an author writes amazing world building and outstanding characters. The Solstice Prince is an absolute delight. I suspected angst but got none. I will admit to a few tear jerking moments but at the same time, they were beautiful too.

Jaime was a slave, rescued when the ship he was in hit a storm and needed help. He enters a land where slavery is forbidden and kindness is everywhere. I admit I was just as suspicious as Jaime when everyone was respectful and nice. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was so happy with his story. It’s told completely in his POV so we literally discover things and wonder things right along with him.

When you were a kid and you dreamed of a prince to take you away and make everything better and love you like no other, it was Maxim you were dreaming of. He is everything and what he does and is for Jaime made him that much more amazing.

Throughout the book I was on edge wondering when something horrible was going to happen. This is typical if you’ve read this author before. But it’s book one of the series and suspect all the trouble will be coming later. She took this time to create the world, introduce us to the players, and start an amazing story arc.

Great read!

EXCERPT

At some prearranged signal, the crowd began to quiet, faces turned towards the canopy where the royals sat. Janis stood and moved to the rail, lifting a hand to the crowd. The people cheered, clapping and shouting the crown prince’s name. Prince Janis was popular with the people if he garnered that kind of reaction— this was not the forced greeting given to a leader that was feared or despised. Jaime still did not know who the king was of Pyrderi, but the future King was well-liked, perhaps even loved.
The people quieted and Janis shouted, his words echoing through the cloud air. “Greetings citizens of Taliesin City! On behalf of the royal family and my father, the king, I welcome you to the first official day of the Solstice Festival! Today is cold and the wind is sharp, so I’ll not waste any time! Would the priests please light the solstice fire, and let the festivities begin!”
The crowd roared in approval and there was a burst of smoke across the square. Two men and a woman dressed in gray robes were standing at the base of a large metal structure about the height of a tall man. The woman was cradling something in her hands that billowed out dark gray smoke and she tossed it into the weird structure. Bright orange flames promptly rose and the crowd cheered again. The royals clapped in approval and Jaime hurriedly copied their example, though he had little idea of what was going on.
Maxim leaned down and spoke in his ear. “The priestess is a Magi and she lit the torch with her magic. The torch represents how life endures even in the depths of winter. The winter solstice is in a few days with the festival ending with the grand ball at the palace. The winter festival here in Taliesin City draws in celebrants from around the country and even from some of the islands in the Straits.”
Jaime blushed when Maxim pulled back and gave him a swift wink and a charming grin. “Janis needs to stay and let the people see him for a while, but the twins are about to escape the cold and we have a tour to finish. The first day of the festival is just the opening ceremony since a lot of people are still arriving. Do you want to stay or would you like to finish the tour?”
“The tour sounds like fun, if you’re sure we won’t be missed.” Any time alone with Maxim was worth the icy chill.
“You two should escape while you can,” Janis said, having overheard Maxim. “I’ll be here until the cold gets too much, talking to courtiers and the like.” The crown prince stood over Jaime who blinked back up at him in surprise. For such a large man, he moved with surprising subtlety. Janis motioned to the lower levels of the stands, and the courtiers below were indeed standing and heading for the stairs that led to the royals’ box. “Unless you want to stay and get fawned over by the masses, Maxim?”
“I’ll save that for you, dear brother. Enjoy your day, and welcome home.” Maxim helped Jaime to his feet. Jaime was at a loss for how to respectfully say goodbye to the crown prince, but Maxim solved this by tugging him away with a casual wave to his brother and the twins, who hardly paid them any heed, tossing back small waves of their own before they went back to talking. Janis grinned at them both and tipped his head towards the stairs.
Maxim took hold of Jaime’s hand and took off for the stairs. They hurried downward until they came back to where the sleigh had dropped them off originally. There was a sleigh waiting for them pulled by the same strange creature Maxim called an oryx. Maxim helped Jaime up into the carriage and jumped in behind him. The driver snapped his whip, and the sleigh jerked into motion.
Their visit to the festival might have been quick, but Jaime didn’t mind. The way Maxim held his hand, tight and firm, like he never wanted to let go, filled Jaime with warmth and a slow burn under his skin, heating his cheeks in the chilly air. The prospect of spending the next few hours in Maxim’s company was incomparable to anything he’d experienced in his short life. Not better than the day he was freed from the slavers, but it was close.
Falling in love felt like learning how to live again.

Synopsis

Max Gaines has known one thing all his life: he loves Jamie Matthews. Best friends since childhood, Max and Jamie are inseparable until the day of Max’s sixteenth birthday when he presents as an Alpha instead of an Omega. With Jamie being an Alpha too, they cannot bond and all their dreams of a future together are dashed.

Jameson “Jamie” Matthews has only ever wanted one man, his best friend Max. He doesn’t care when Max turns out to be an Alpha just like him, Jamie is willing to disregard society’s rules and mate with Max anyway. But when Jamie’s rut comes, all their hopes of bonding are in ashes. Jamie joins the Army to hide his pain and to hide from Max.

Left behind, Max is determined to find a way for them to be together. But time is running out as Jamie’s unit is captured by the anti-shifter group The Amity Brethren. Can Max save Jamie in time, or does fate has something different in mind for them?

Excerpt

Max could smell the other Alpha. The thin door of his apartment couldn’t keep the unmistakable stench of an Alpha in a rut out. Max searched for an exit. The bedroom window was nailed shut. In the winter, Old Man Johnson barely kept the pipes from freezing, turning the hot water down so far; Max thought he would die of hypothermia in his sleep because the furnace never kicked on. So repairing the only escape exit in their Denver apartment hadn’t been their landlord’s top priority.

Cheap bastard.

As the Alpha’s scent grew closer and closer, Max’s throat closed and his head spun. Which was strange as he normally dove in feet first and thought about the consequences later, usually after Jamie pulled his ass out of the fire. But an Alpha in a rut was a different beast. They wouldn’t know Max was damaged goods. An inferior, infertile Alpha doomed to never mate and reproduce. They’d just be able to smell Max’s Alpha pheromones and view him as a possible threat or competition.

He wasn’t a threat. As if any Omega would even look twice at Max.

Eventually the smell overwhelmed Max and he acted quickly in order to protect himself. He grabbed his childhood baseball bat out of their coat closet and prepared himself for battle. The weapon would give Max a fighting chance to overpower the Alpha so he could run.

The front door slammed open and as Max wound his swing up, he suddenly stopped. Jamie stood in the doorway emanating anger. His trademark smirk gone, his expression instead fierce and furious.

Max’s roommate stomped in, throwing his heavy winter coat to the side and pushed the door closed behind him. All the while cursing up a storm, and ignoring Max.

“God damn idiots! Sending me home,” he raged, pacing back and forth as he worked himself into a full blown temper tantrum in their tiny living room.

A strange Alpha would have been a danger to Max, but his best friend was more like a brother, so Max had no trepidation being around Jamie when he went into a rut. Their bond pushed aside all those deep-seated Alpha tendencies to stomp out all romantic rivals for unmated Omegas in the area.

He sighed heavily. All that panic for nothing, Max lowered the bat. Jamie in a snit had been a common occurrence throughout their childhood.

He looked at Max, his blue eyes blazing. “Can you believe O’Malley said that I was ‘a danger’ to the guys on the job?” Jamie worked on a construction site in downtown Denver, nearly thirty minutes from their 600 square foot, one bedroom apartment near the University of Denver.

Max shrugged, letting Jamie answer his own question. He’d learned over the years just to let Jamie rant and get it out of his system.

“Me, Max. I’ve had four ruts since I started working there and have I ever been violent?” He looked to Max for confirmation and as Max opened his mouth to respond, Jamie barreled over him. “No! I’m a respectable Alpha. I don’t brawl-”

Max raised an eyebrow at that statement.

Jamie gave him the look. “Shut up, Max. The only time I ever fight is to save your scrawny ass and you know it. Otherwise, I’m a complete gentleman.”

“Francis Kirby,” Max reminded him.

“Ah, Max, you’re going to bring that up? It was eighth grade. The guy deserved a beat down. He called you a ‘little omega bitch’ and ordered you to suck his cock.”

“I remember what he called me, Jamie. Punching him the face for it was all your idea if I recall.”

“As my mother said when Sister Mary Margaret called her to the Reverend Mother’s office to suspend me: ‘Francis is a disgrace to proper Alpha’s everywhere and my son was well within his rights to protect his m-’” Jamie stopped speaking and looked away from Max.

Max closed his eyes and breathed in deep, the pain still fresh all these years later. He wasn’t Jamie’s mate, was never going to be Jamie’s mate; despite their parents thinking most of their childhood that Jamie and Max would eventually bond. The night Max snarled at Jamie and his father during his presentation hunt had crushed that dream. Max was an Alpha, a small and infertile one, but still an Alpha.

Every since grade school, Max had been told that two ‘normal’ Alphas couldn’t bond. They’d kill each other during their ruts. Most couldn’t even live together, let alone be roommates. Thanks to a lack of testosterone during his ruts, Max’s brain and body didn’t view Jamie as an adversary. Despite that night in the mountains, Max had never manifested as a dominant Alpha. Further medical tests in his junior year of high school had determined why.

A gentle hand touched Max’s shoulder and snapped Max out of his musings. Jamie pulled him into a forceful hug and said, “I’m sorry, Max. I know you don’t like to talk about it.”

“Its okay, Jamie.” He snuggled in closer and breathed in Jamie’s unique scent. Cinnamon, musk and a hint of gravel, sand, and cement from the construction site now coated with the flavor of an Alpha starting his rut. “I would have made a lousy mate.”

Synopsis

Pierce Atwater used to think he was a knight in shining armor, but then his life fell to crap. Now he has no job, no wife, no life—and is so full of self-pity he can’t even be decent to the one family member he’s still speaking to. He heads for Florida, where he’s got a month to pull his head out of his ass before he ruins his little sister’s Christmas.

Harold Justice Lombard the Fifth is at his own crossroads—he can keep being Hal, massage therapist in training, flamboyant and irrepressible to the bones, or he can let his parents rule his life. Hal takes one look at Pierce and decides they’re fellow unicorns out to make the world a better place. Pierce can’t reject Hal’s overtures of friendship, in spite of his misgivings about being too old and too pissed off to make a good friend.

As they experience everything from existential Looney Tunes to eternal trips to Target, Pierce becomes more dependent on Hal’s optimism to get him through the day. When Hal starts getting him through the nights too, Pierce must look inside for the knight he used to be—before Christmas becomes a doomsday deadline of heartbreak instead of a celebration of love.

Review

Regret Me Not is a story of two men unlikely to become friends yet alone lovers. What we do know though is these two men are special, they’re unicorns. No, not actual unicorns, but together they do develop something magical.

Pierce Atwater is hurt, divorcing and trying to handle his physical therapy all alone in Florida. Staying at his best friend’s condo, he has no expectations other than maybe getting a little better and being alone and grumpy. Enter Harold Justice Lombard the Fifth, would be massage therapist. Hal is a college student banished to Florida by his family for being too gay to be home for the Christmas holiday. Hal helps Pierce with his aqua therapy and runs down his sore muscles after those workouts. At first Pierce doesn’t understand why Hal would help him or even want to be around him. Quickly these two become friends and both of them start to come alive with the other’s support. I loved seeing their friendship, it has an almost childlike innocence to it. That friendship becomes attraction and soon the two are practically living together....on borrowed time. Pierce is only in Florida for a month, but a lot can happen in a month. Hal and Pierce become each other’s closest friend, confidant, lover and champion. The way Amy Lane writes this story of friendship and love is so believable because if ever two men needed each other, it’s Hal and Pierce! These two unicorns deserve their happily ever after!

I really loved this book, you feel the deep rooted loneliness in these men. Watching them play almost like children is so sweet, especially with the heat that summers under the surface. Two people that don’t seem to make any sense or have anything in common, just work. You understand that they’ve found Home in each other. It’s just a lovely love story that I highly recommend!

Trevor and Gabe never knew life without the other. As only children, they grew up as close as brothers, but their love grew to something more. Something they couldn't talk about because their parents wouldn't understand.

Gabe is gay and unapologetic about his sexuality. He refuses to live his life in the shadows, but that doesn't mean he isn't harboring secrets.

Trevor is his parents’ miracle child and he doesn’t want to hurt them. Coming out, admitting he's in love with Gabe, could ruin everything.

Heading off to college was supposed to finally free them to be together, but nothing is as easy as it seems. Can they find a way to navigate this new world, living and loving openly?

Author Bio

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s life. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed mom with a mohawk and two kids. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself with a good book and forget she has somewhere to be.
