Random Review: The Story of Us by Barbara Elsborg #Review #Giveaway

Author: Barbara Elsborg
Title: The Story Of Us
Self Published
Publication Date: October 30, 2018
Length: 435 pages

Reviewed by Meredith

Synopsis

Two boys. One love. Ten summers.

Are you okay?
The first words Zed says to Caspian, and the first time someone has cared about the answer. On a hot summer’s day, the lives of two boys are changed forever. A rebel and a risk taker, Caspian doesn’t give a damn for the consequences. Studious and obedient, Zed is the good boy who is never good enough.

The two couldn’t be more different, but there’s one thing they share, a need to belong to someone who understands them, someone who cares. Their friendship goes deeper than either can possibly imagine. They’re young, in love, and planning their future when an act of betrayal tears them apart.

Fate deals its hand. Seasons pass. Zed’s words follow Caspian through pain, fear and into the darkest of places. Friendships can last a lifetime, even when the world conspires to crush them. But this is more than friendship. This is love and they’re not going to let it slip through their fingers.

Warning
The Story of Us is a tale of love and survival, and the triumph of good over evil against the odds. It's a new adult contemporary romance that deals with family and social issues. There is violence and cruelty to children but not sexual assault. The story has sexual situations, dark elements and suspense. The events and locations are a mixture of real and fictional. The characters are fictional.

Review

There is no doubt in my mind that Barbara Elsborg is one of the best authors I've ever read. If ever there was a tiny question in my mind The Story Of Us squashed that. This was definitely one of, if not the best book I read all year. The power, emotion, everything in this was outstanding.

Zed and Caspian are two boys who never really get to be boys then they are men and struggle at being men. And yet, they end up being the best humans they could be. Both with childhoods that are dark, full of hate, violence, and very little love.

The love these two have for each other is the light in this book. When they are ever in each other's orbit you feel the pull as the reader. Suddenly, the environment they are standing in doesn't matter because they are together.

I have no way to really explain this book and how it shook me, how it made my heart beat faster, made tears flow effortlessly down my cheeks, how angry I became. This is a book not to be missed. It's one you'll need tissues for, maybe some alcohol, and certainly time. This book will consume you and nothing will matter except Zed and Caspian and their rough, almost impossible journey.
DO. NOT. MISS. THIS. BOOK!

Bravo, Barbara Elsborg, I want to be just like you when I grow up.

Random Review: The Christmas I Know by Nicky James #Review #Giveaway

Synopsis

Andrew Walker has memories of what Christmas is supposed to be like. Having lived so many years without a family to share the holidays with, he’s determined to rebuild traditions with his fiancĂ©, Val. However, Val’s ideal Christmas doesn’t align with Andrew’s.
Not only do the men come from two different worlds, but they live thousands of miles apart.
During a disastrous trip to Toronto to visit Val for the holidays, Andrew meets Xavier, a caring and thoughtful man who only wants to help Andrew out of a bad situation and get him where he’s supposed to be for Christmas.
Xavier grew up in a loving home filled with a holiday spirit that reminds Andrew of his childhood. Reflecting on life and love, Andrew realizes how mismatched he and Val truly are and wonders if this is the life he’s destined to live.
Perhaps being alone is better than settling for someone who doesn’t make him happy.
Except, no one should be alone at Christmas, so when Xavier finds out Andrew’s plan to travel home alone after ending his relationship with Val, he has a different agenda.
Maybe it’s time Andrew gets a taste of the Christmas he knows in his heart.

Review

It's Christmas stories like this one I long for during the holiday season. The ones that grab your heart, wrap you in all things Christmas, and surround you with amazing traditions. After reading this I made gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate. That's how much this book put me in the spirit.

Andrew and Xavier were a match made in heaven. I loved their dynamic and how both were so utterly passionate about who they were. I was sad for Andrew when Val treated him how he did but secretly cheered for Xavier.

There wasn't one thing I didn't love about this book from beginning to end. I wanted to hold out reading do it would last that much longer. This is a MUST read this holiday season and every year after.

But just as they both think that it’s their turn to experience the season of miracles, Bo’s old alpha finds them, and unless Gabe can manage the impossible, all their Christmas dreams will melt like snow.

Review

His First Christmas is an MPreg Christmas tale. So, that has to be something you enjoy in order to enjoy this. Bo is a sweet, scared, abused, and adorable omega who is going into labor. Of course it's in the middle of a snowstorm, an his car dies. Gabe is a veterinarian who is a lone wolf of sorts. He spends the holidays alone every year. While that was super sad I did wonder how that was possible with as many friends he seemed to have. Why didn't any of them ever ask him to join them? I did expect there to be no one in his life but that wasn't true so I was curious about that.

Gabe takes a lot of crap from people in this story when assumptions are made and I was really in awe of him for taking the heat on it. Bo's fear was believable and so were his reactions. Standing up for anything was never something he did and his strength needed to be built.

All in all this is truly a sweet story with a fairytale-esque feel to it. Perfect holiday fun and lots and lots of love!

Official Release Date: November 30, 2018

Synopsis

Lennox Freeman (Free) is one of the best hackers in the world which has caused him to spend most of his life on the run. Never able to put down roots, he couldn’t trust anyone not to take advantage of him, even his own family. If it wasn’t for his best friend, Tech, shielding him, Free’s father would’ve sold him and his skills to the highest bidding crime family when he was still a student at MIT. Free owed Tech his life; so when his friend called for him to come to Atlanta to work with him, he couldn’t say no. However, he wasn’t expecting the overprotective group of detectives that made up Atlanta PD’s most notorious task force. And he certainly wasn’t prepared for the large-and-in-charge SWAT Captain that was responsible for their safety.
Ivan Hart has lived and bled one creed all of his life: To Serve and Protect. His intense focus and determination in law enforcement has led him to finally commanding his own team. He’d worked hard to put together a squad of badasses capable of backing up a very dangerous team of detectives. Being God and Day’s last line of defense came with a lot of responsibility that he took very seriously.
After his divorce was final Hart turned right around and remarried his job. He had his good friends there in the office with him every day, so it was easier to ignore the few quiet hours he spent at home alone each night. He’d settled well into his new routine and was comfortable with it. Then God decided to disrupt everything by hiring another tech specialist for his department. A man whose brains, trendy looks, and voice would leave Hart tongue-tied and captivated at their first introduction.
Free quickly awakens a passion in Hart that he long thought was dead. An attraction he didn’t know existed. He couldn’t fathom that the sexy cyber genius could be interested in an over-sized, big-bearded brute that served criminals the bottom line for a living. No matter what his best friend, God said.
A future with Hart could be potentially dangerous and often times full of terrifyingly close calls; but little did he know that so could falling for the most hunted hacker in the world. All Lennox Freeman wants in life is security, love and protection… Hart had all that to give and more.

This novel is a part of a series and contains previously mentioned characters, but CAN BE read as a standalone. No cliffhangers.

Review

I've been reading A.E. Via what feels like forever. Each series, every word; and one thing I know for certain is that when I open one of her books my blood pressure will rise. All of her books are fast paced, full of romance, emotions, action, and adventure.

His Hart's Command is book six in her Nothing Special Series and it's the beginning of the SWAT edition. Now, while I agree this can be read as a standalone you really should read them all to understand the dynamics of the characters. But you won't lose any story if you start here.

Hart and Len are amazing together. Both strong and both weak. Both confident and both vulnerable. Each suffered in their past and it was perfection that they found each other. I don't think anyone else would have clicked with either of them.

There's an ongoing story line brewing so before you go forward make sure you read this book before the next one. I'm not sure it will be a standalone. They are tracking a gang and we don't get closure on it in this book so I'm ready for it! But this is more about these two characters finding their place in love all the while trying not to die in fires, car chases, and gun fire. Like I said, A.E. Via finds a way to bring action to her love stories.

It's a wonderful, exciting, sexy story that will hook you and reel you in for sure.

GUEST POST

IT’S ABOUT THAT TIME AGAIN!
I’m so happy to be back with the next installment from my Nothing Special series. It’s been a while since I visited with my guys and let me tell you it was one helluva ride they took me on. This title has all the guys you love from the previous stories and some new that I’m sure you’ll adore. Which can make this title stand on its on. Since my last two novels, my alpha lovers have asked for more action and hotter romance. I hope I delivered.

I’m doing a guest post on each stop of my limited tour and each one WILL BE DIFFERENT. I never know what to talk about or say for a post – not wanting to do the usual – so I’m gonna talk about my many experiences I had over the several months of writing this book. Some will be funny quips, cute tales, people I spoke to, emotions I experienced, etc.

What I wanna talk about on Diverse Reader today is my MC SWAT Captain Ivan Hart and my experience having to watch so many danggone SWAT reality shows. Are any of you aware of just how freakin many there are? Lots. Dallas SWAT, Miami SWAT, Detroit SWAT, and more. Then there’s the most notorious of them all airing right now… SWAT on CBS staring Shemar Moore. Lordy. I didn’t watch much of this program. It’s too much Hollywood glamour of course. And the sex…too distracting. I am an author that does lots of research through many mediums. TV is one. Those shows really helped me with the realism of that job, the verbiage and how SWAT can take over a hostile scene. I’m not much for reality TV but sometimes it comes in handy. *winking*
Thank you all for listening and thank you so much Mere for letting me stop by again.

Definitely leave me a comment below on your thoughts, (DO YOU HAVE a reality show that you just can’t miss? Even if it’s a guilty pleasure, fess up. I’m a Naked and Afraid girl myself), and enter a chance to win some of the kickass prizes in my giveaway that correlates with my computer-guru, MC. That means sweet gadgets.

Exclusive Excerpt

“Afternoon.”
Free jumped so hard the three sugar packets he’d had in his hand flew into the air. The sound of that growly, bear-like voice had him gripping the edge of the counter. He chuckled at his reaction. Had he been that deep in thought that he’d made Hart materialize out of thin air? With his head still down, staring at the darkening liquid in his mug, he said, a little huskier than he wanted, “I’m glad you’re back.”
“So you noticed I was gone?”
Free smirked and turned around, ready to give the captain a witty comeback, but instead he almost swallowed his tongue. Hart was freshly shaved and showered. His SWAT office uniform hugging his muscular body in all the good places. He stood so tall, and that was saying something, since Free wasn’t short. Hart was the perfect height. His bald head gleamed under the fluorescent lights, so tempting for Free to touch. To smooth his palm over it. To bury his face in that long, bushy beard. It was a look that was made just for him.
Of course I noticed you were gone. Every day.
“I did.” Was all he could manage. He tried not to inhale Hart’s scent, but it was either smell his deliciousness or not breathe, and pass out.
“Your lieutenant said you were taking a late lunch.” Hart reached around him and went for a mug in the cabinet over his head. “Thought I’d swing by and say hello.”
“I heard your team was amazing with the fed’s witness. Congratulations.”
Hart’s shy smile was endearing. Instead of saying thank you, he nudged Free with his shoulder as he grabbed a couple of Irish cream creamers from beside him. Hart’s deodorant made him want to bury his nose in his pit. Free shook his head, needing to calm his thoughts before the entire break room noticed just how turned on he was by Ivan Hart.
“So, how’ve you been doing?” Hart continued.
“I’m good. Really good. Doing good.” Free wanted to roll his eyes. Bloody hell. Stop saying good. “Um, fine.”
Hart smiled at him as he filled his large mug. “That’s really good to hear, then.”
Free could feel his face warming. He stood like an idiot with his tongue caught in his throat while Hart casually added a couple of packets of Splenda to his coffee. Ask him now. No one’s paying attention. Free took a large swallow of his steaming hot tea instead, practically scalding his lip, since he’d somehow forgotten to add his milk. Ouch, shit! Fuck!
“You okay over there?” Hart asked, chuckling behind his cup.
“Sure. I just need a touch of cream. It’s kind of bitter.” Free tried to keep the pain out of his voice.

A.E. (Adrienne) Via has been a best-selling author in gay romance for five years now, but she’s no stranger to MM. She’s been an avid reader of gay lit for over twenty years before she picked up her laptop to place her own kiss on this beautiful genre. She’s also the founder and owner of Via Star Wings Books, having published a couple of great new up and coming MM authors.
A.E. has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Virginia Wesleyan College that she used to start her own paralegal firm after she graduated in 2008. She spent five years preparing and filing bankruptcy petitions for struggling blue collar workers who couldn’t afford to file with a lawyer. It was a rewarding and satisfying career… but another path called to me. Writing.
A.E.’s writing embodies everything from hopelessly romantic to adventure, to scandalous. Her stories often include intriguing edges and twists that take readers to new, thought-provoking depths.
Now that she’s gotten over her 10 books published hump, she’s kind of known now for her play rough and love hard, bad boy, alphas. However, I do like to push myself to step out of my comfort zone and explore with different tropes, but I never push myself into a whole other genre. I’m head over heels for gay romance and I have tons of more hot stories to tell.
