The demigod race “Earned” live among mankind and serve their souls. It’s usually a pretty straightforward purpose and a calm life for these ancient beings, but when a half-breed is born into their ranks, all sorts of problems arise.

Kaleb was born in a convent in France in 1593. Sixteen years later the inquisition deemed him a witch and burned him at the stake. But he didn’t die. He couldn’t burn. The Church had another weapon against his kind, though, and they anchored him in a stone.
Four hundred twenty years later, a thief named Alex Rhoden is sent on the easiest heist of his career. Getting Kaleb’s anchor stone was easy. But he wasn’t the only one looking for it.

Chronicles of an Earned is a series where you’ll meet the entire spectrum of the paranormal. Where good and evil isn’t black and white, where Angels can be wrong, Demons not always the evil ones, and where witches, warlocks, and wizards aren’t as clear cut as general culture has you believe. Here, historical and mythological facts are twisted but kept as reliable and true to their sources as possible. All this with a side dish of hot and sweet MM.

Chronicles of an Earned #6

At age eleven, Meino buried his dad next to where they had buried his mom less than six months earlier. For the next twelve years, his dreams are haunted by the lonely cries of the Gargoyle. As an adult, Meino tries the spell again to get rid of the nightmares. Only this time it works. But once the magic is alive it attracts the attention of the New Knight Templars who wants to destroy the Gargoyle.

Nathan and Lucien have settled into a routine at the school where Nathan studies to be able to help the Order. Just as life is calming down, it all takes a turn. News that a protégé is in danger, and that Nathan’s beloved Professor Nigel Gershman has died, is just the beginning. Once again, Nathan and Lucien are moved about to assist the Order, and new magic brings out a hidden enemy.

Blog Tour: Wake by K. Evan Coles & Brigham Vaughn ~Guest Post #Giveaway

Story Origins -- Just For Fun

Several years ago, back before we decided to take the leap and make a go of this writing thing, we used to write together just for fun. Our approaches to writing were very different--K. Evan sometimes struggled to find words, while Brigham found so many words she felt overwhelmed--but our styles blended well and we truly enjoyed working as a team. When we got into the sweet writing zone together, we could almost hear the click of pieces sliding into place.

The story that became the novel Wake and its sequel, Calm, started out as a one of those just-for-fun collaborations. We came up with a story idea and talked it out, crafting a story about a het couple who meet for a strictly sexual encounter but go on to become acquainted and eventually fall in love. We wrote the story in a burst of creativity over just a few weeks, sometimes working simultaneously in the same doc, literally watching each other write on occasion (which is an odd experience if you haven’t tried it), and encouraging each other as we went along.

We had a blast. What’s more, readers really enjoyed the finished story.

The funny thing for us as the story-crafters, however, was that a same-sex couple, Garrett and Riley--who were minor players in the story--stood out to us both as characters. In our minds, they began to eclipse the original main character couple, even though we hardly knew them.

Finally, we had to ask ourselves: what are we going to do about these men?

In between other projects, we talked casually about exploring Garrett and Riley’s backstory, and decided we could probably write something novella-length exploring their characters. Then Brigham had the idea to submit the manuscript to a publisher running a contest and we were off and running.

It wasn’t long before we came to the realization both characters had more to say--a lot more. Garrett and Riley’s story took on a life of its own, and each character evolved as the plot developed and the cast of characters grew (and grew). We got to know Garrett and Riley as boys in their late teens and took them into their early thirties. We changed their careers around and gave them families and highly entertaining circles of lovers and friends. We even changed Garrett’s name, and he became Carter.

What began as an exercise to explore character backstories morphed into first one novel and then two that spanned over fifteen years for the characters and over three years for us. And remember those highly entertaining circles of friends we gave Carter and Riley? Well, they’ve now spawned a four (or maybe five) part spin-off series.

One of the most enjoyable parts of writing collaboratively is the journey these characters have taken us on.

We hope you’ll enjoy reading their story as much as we have enjoyed telling it!

Book one in the Tidal series

Carter Hamilton and Riley Porter-Wright room together as Harvard undergraduates. An immediate friendship forms, but as the years pass it deepens into something neither man understands. As attraction simmers under the surface, lines begin to blur. When they move back to Manhattan, they gradually slip into the lives their families have envisioned for them.

Both men marry, but in time, Riley realizes he’s ended up in a passionless relationship like his parents’ while his career takes center stage. Although he loves his wife, Carter misses the emotional and physical connection he shared with Riley.

The weight of Riley’s feelings and his growing discontentment with his life eventually push him to tell Carter the truth about how he feels. Shocked and unable to face his own feelings, Carter rejects Riley.

As each man comes to terms with the lies they’ve told themselves, each other and the people around them, they find their lives changing in ways they never imagined. They soon discover that the truths they’ve been longing to tell shake the foundations of their friendship.

EXCERPT
Gabe pinched my ass hard enough to leave a mark. “Ouch!” “I’ll kiss it later if you stop being a brat,” Gabe said. “You know damn well I’m talking about our wedding.” “Yeah, I know,” I told him. “I was just revving you up. What kind of wedding did you think I had in mind?” “It’s hard telling with you,” Gabe said. I raised up on my elbow and looked down at him, even though I couldn’t see anything. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “I don’t know,” Gabe said. “I was just revving you up.” “Oh, in that case,” I said, lying back down beside him. I pinched his nipple hard enough to make him hiss and arch his back. “You little hellcat,” he said. I could hear him rubbing his hand over his affliction. “I’ll kiss it later if you stop being a brat,” I mimicked. “It’ll have to wait until tomorrow because I probably can’t get it up again until then,” Gabe said. “That’s a glowing endorsement if I’ve ever heard one,” I said. “Not even married yet and I’ve rendered you limp.” Gabe rolled me to my back to switch our positions and leaned over me. “Yeah, you rendered me limp because your tight, greedy ass milked every ounce of spunk I had. It’s going to take some time for my splooge factory to make some more.” I laughed hard at his ridiculousness even though I felt a little pride that I wore him out; it was no easy feat.

I am a wife and mother to three kids, three dogs, and a cat. When I’m not dreaming up stories, I like to lose myself in a good book, cook or bake. I'm a girly tomboy who paints her fingernails while watching sports and yelling at the referees.
I will always choose the book over the movie. I believe in happily-ever-after. Love inspires everything that I do. Music keeps me sane.

Length: 96 pages

Synopsis

Wolf shifter Falco Gladstone knew Carter McCloud was his mate when they were in seventh grade, but school and the foster care system tore them apart. Years later, Falco is second in command of his Michigan pack, serving under an uncle who cares more about his own power than the welfare of their people. The alpha orders Falco to marry and produce offspring—but Falco’s already found his mate, and mates are forever.

Carter’s lonely life is turned upside down when he detects a familiar scent on the wind. The mates might have found each other, but their happily ever after is far from guaranteed. Falco’s commitment to Carter puts him at odds with his uncle’s plans, and when one of the alpha’s enforcers starts shadowing the couple, something must be done—something that will either cement their relationship or destroy it once and for all.

Review

This was a fast read that was filled with a little suspense, love, adversity, and retribution. It’s a story about finding your other half only to lose it and find it again.

Falco is in such a bad spot in this story. He finds out when he is 13 that he’s fated to a boy shifter. Then goes years never seeing him again. Carter is adorable and kind and everything Falco desperately needs. I adored him. Falco’s uncle is a bigot and won’t allow Falco to mate with a man. So, this causes massive issues as you can imagine.

This is a sweet love story with a few gasp-worthy moments. Like I said it is a quick read and it does have an airy somewhat fluffy quality to it. That’s not bad! It worked well with this story. Falco not only shows his pack he’s a leader he shows them love doesn’t have a gender. Love just is.

I can’t pinpoint my favorite part of this book but it warmed my heart to see Falco and Carter helping Mildred and her pups. Of course, PC is awesome! I hope he finds all he is looking for in life because he’s a great friend to Carter and deserves happiness.
This is a very enjoyable read.
