Synopsis

Seventeen years ago, Forge Reynolds fell in love… and had his heart broken. When Staff Sergeant Gage Livingston was brought into Forge’s Army field hospital, temporarily paralyzed, Forge sat with him, read his letters, answered his mail, and formed a connection he thought would last. But Gage was sent home, Forge transferred to a new post, and his letters to Gage went unanswered.

Now in the middle of a bitter divorce, Forge is sick and tired of his husband’s manipulation. He's almost ready to make any sacrifice to get closure—then he finds Granger murdered execution-style in their home. Forge had no idea about Granger’s illicit activities, but the killers don’t believe that. They think Forge has something they want, and they’re coming after him.

When Forge’s lawyer arranges for professional protection, the last face Forge expects to see is Gage’s. Can he even contemplate a second chance for them after almost two decades, or will hope only lead to more heartache? Before they can explore the possibilities, they must figure out what information Granger had—that others are willing to kill for—or that possible heartache could become a certainty.

Review

This author is known for his mystery and suspense and Hell and Back takes you on a ride of murder, mayhem, and puzzles.

Forge and Gage fell in love seventeen years ago and only the murder of Forge’s husband brings them back together again. So, in that aspect it’s a second chance story as well. Those are always exciting because you KNOW they know each other before they even see one another. That moment when they lay eyes on each other is everything.

This has a strong romantic element to it. I would say this was fifty percent romance and fifty percent drama and mystery so if you’re a fan of both then you will love this.

I knew this story was too easy when a “bad guy” was revealed and I love that I was thinking like my own life depended on it. It’s the greatest when a book can make you do that.

In some areas I found it did drag and that was mostly due to dialog. There was some mild redundancy in conversations that Gage and Forge would have. Like the same conversation a few times. That was the only little thing that bothered me.

I really love this author and the masterful way he tangles romance and mystery together. It’s always so well thought out and clever!

I recommend this book for the lover of a good whodunit and romance.

Synopsis

Wolf shifter Falco Gladstone knew Carter McCloud was his mate when they were in seventh grade, but school and the foster care system tore them apart. Years later, Falco is second in command of his Michigan pack, serving under an uncle who cares more about his own power than the welfare of their people. The alpha orders Falco to marry and produce offspring—but Falco’s already found his mate, and mates are forever.

Carter’s lonely life is turned upside down when he detects a familiar scent on the wind. The mates might have found each other, but their happily ever after is far from guaranteed. Falco’s commitment to Carter puts him at odds with his uncle’s plans, and when one of the alpha’s enforcers starts shadowing the couple, something must be done—something that will either cement their relationship or destroy it once and for all.

Review

This was a fast read that was filled with a little suspense, love, adversity, and retribution. It’s a story about finding your other half only to lose it and find it again.

Falco is in such a bad spot in this story. He finds out when he is 13 that he’s fated to a boy shifter. Then goes years never seeing him again. Carter is adorable and kind and everything Falco desperately needs. I adored him. Falco’s uncle is a bigot and won’t allow Falco to mate with a man. So, this causes massive issues as you can imagine.

This is a sweet love story with a few gasp-worthy moments. Like I said it is a quick read and it does have an airy somewhat fluffy quality to it. That’s not bad! It worked well with this story. Falco not only shows his pack he’s a leader he shows them love doesn’t have a gender. Love just is.

I can’t pinpoint my favorite part of this book but it warmed my heart to see Falco and Carter helping Mildred and her pups. Of course, PC is awesome! I hope he finds all he is looking for in life because he’s a great friend to Carter and deserves happiness.
This is a very enjoyable read.

But he cannot act on his attraction, no matter how much he feels compelled. Exposure to the human world could mean the end of their way of life, so he decides to help Pete get a room until he can reunite with the tour group he separated from.

But Tobias’s disgraced half brother, Zev, has other ideas. He takes a liking to Pete and decides he wants what Tobias has—both his position as pack leader and his mate. Tobias can’t let that happen, but protecting Pete means keeping him close, which only increases the mounting tensions between them.

Duty, protection, desire, and secrecy clash as the darkness within Zev rises to the surface, and only Tobias can save his mate—even if he never plans to tell Pete that’s what they are.

Review

Can I say first that I love this series! The characters the overall storyline, each couple that is introduced...love. I look forward to these books being released with no patience at all.

Tobias is the Alpha if his small pack, his job is to lead, care, and make sure each one of them are happy and getting what they need. Finding a human stranger in his barn who happens to be his true mate is the last thing he expected when he woke after a bad storm. He knows he can’t keep him, can’t tell of his secret, because exposing them could be dangerous. Pete lost and alone, separated from his hiking team, finds shelter in a barn after a storm and a jaguar is out to get him. Being from the city he has no idea how to survive being lost in the woods, thankful for the strangers that find him and help him until he can get back to where he belongs he helps out whenever he can.

Pete is a bit unlucky in life it seems in the beginning; but soon we get to see that he is actually stronger than he thinks, and much more useful. He was so used to not being wanted that he couldn’t see beyond his own feelings to what was really going on with Tobias and himself. I loved his sass and take no shit attitude, even from Tobias. I loved how smart and clever he was, even how he handled a certain grumpy sister. I felt the immediate attraction between the two, and the author was fantastic at fanning the flames until they set fire to everything. Tobias gives up so much for those around him, which both broke and warmed my heart. He is just a good guy all around, never seeing what he gives up for his own happiness. But he’s that Alpha who isn’t big meany pants just because he’s Alpha. The chemistry between them was hot and off the charts.

Zev, half-brother to Tobias, was the bad guy that was easy to not like. He felt creepy and slimy  right from the start. I love how the author describes the power and darkness that surrounds him. He wasn’t as clever as he thought he was, that’s for sure, but he was blinded by his hatred and want that he couldn’t see the truth in front of him.

Can’t wait for the next in the series, which from the story, might be Greg and a certain human...

Synopsis

Jim Crawford was born wealthy, but he turned his back on it to become a police officer. Add that to his being gay, and he’s definitely the black sheep of the family.

Dr. Barty Halloran grew up with lessons instead of friends and toys and, as a result, became a gifted psychologist… with only an academic understanding of people and emotions.

When Jim’s pursuit of a serial killer goes nowhere, he turns to Dr. Halloran for help, and Barty thinks he can get inside the shooter’s mind. In many ways, they’re two sides of the same coin, which both scares and intrigues him. Together, Jim and Barty make progress on the case—until the stakes shoot higher when the killer turns his attention toward Barty.

To protect Barty, Jim offers to let Barty stay with him, where he discovers the doctor has a heart to go along with his brilliant mind after all. But as they close in on their suspect, the killer becomes desperate, and he’ll do anything to elude capture—even threaten those closest to Jim.

Review

Without a question Dirk Greyson writes some of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time. Playing with Fire is truly fabulous. Jim is a detective trying to unravel the mystery of a rooftop serial killer who shoots people with one shot and disappears.

When they keep hitting dead ends Jim calls his sister who sets him up with a Psychologist who just might be what he needs to figure out this murderer.

Barty is a geeky, socially awkward, genius. Love isn’t something he’s ever had and he’s utterly lonely. Jim is recovering from a broken heart, his family isn’t the most accepting, and now he has this killer to find. All the while Barty and Jim get closer and give each other neither has ever had… unconditional love.

Building a love story within a riveting mystery takes great balance and creativity. The author engages you at all angles. There’s a lot of layers to this story and almost no issues at all. I had only two but I can’t at all mention them without giving away the story so I’m going to let it go. When writing something this detailed a minor thing is not a huge deal. It didn’t affect the story, plot, or outcome.

I adored both MCs thoroughly. Literally the entire time. Neither of them angered or annoyed me and I couldn’t pick which I liked more.

Dirk Greyson is a terrific mystery writer and this is an amazing book if you’re a mystery lover like me!
