Random Review: Switching Through The Forest With Me by Johnny Williams #Review #Giveaway

Author: Johnny Williams
Book: Switching Through The Forest With Me
Self Published
Publication Date: July 18, 2017
Length: 159 pages

Synopsis

Joshua is preparing for his 16th birthday. He's not only going to tell his parents he's gay, but he's going to introduce them to his boyfriend at his party.

On the flip side, his family is preparing for his 16th birthday also. They're going to tell him there's a chance he could be a Shifter. (In their family, if he has the curse, they turn into Werecats).

BUT, there's also a 1 in a 100% chance he could be a wild card Shifter. Called a Switcher. Then all bets are off. Because Switchers have no idea what they will become. EVER.

And, if he does become a Switcher... every night, at 9 PM (Hey, don't ask me, that's the time his family shifts) he will change form. Man, animal, woman, whatever. He will never look the same again.

Life will never be the same for Joshua. Or for his relationship, if he is that wild card. Or his family.

Be ready to laugh

My YA offering, a gay comedy love story.

Review

Switching Through The Forest With Me is a YA comedy from author Johnny Williams. I've read his work before and it never fails to make me laugh. In this, I would say I laughed even more than ever. It's wildly creative, massively fun, and hilarious.

Joshua is sixteen and ready to tell his family he's gay! But his family has a surprise for him instead. He is likely a shifter. Well, as you can imagine that throws Joshua for a loop and in doing so makes for a crazy adventure.

There's a fabulous twist to this shifter story because Joshua never knows what he will turn into. One night he's a squirrel and another night he's a woman, and another night he's.... well you get it. As a reader I was always curious what would happen at 9PM. What would Joshua be?

Johnny Williams truly masters comedy in any genre. This being YA I feel he's sharing his talent with a wider audience. You can be 13 or 93 and positively love this book. You have to enjoy good old fashion humor and be ready to step into a magical, nutty world.

I very much recommend this book if you're looking for something that will make you feel good.

Series Recap Tour: Overly Dramatic by Rebecca Cohen #Review #Giveaway

Overly Dramatic (Treading The Boards #1)  Rebecca Cohen

Author: Rebecca Cohen

Length: 41,081 words

Blurb

Andy Marshall moves to London looking for a fresh start after breaking up with his long-term boyfriend. To stave off boredom from his day job as an accountant and to meet new people, Andy joins a local amateur dramatics society called the Sarky Players based in Greenwich, South London.

Despite his best efforts to avoid it, Andy is cast as one of the leads in a truly dreadful play called Whoops, Vicar, There Goes My Trousers, written by a local playwright.

The play might be bad, but the Sarky Players are a friendly bunch. Andy quickly makes new friends and finds himself attracted to Phil Cormack, a local artist helping with the props. But life doesn’t run to a script, so Andy and Phil will have to work hard to improvise their own happy ending.

Review

This is book one of Rebecca Cohen’s Treading the Boards series. Overly Dramatic is the type of story you read when you want to just have a good time and enjoy reading. See, I was a huge theater nerd in high school. I directed, stage managed, and acted in the plays and musicals. So this story was such a treat for me.

Andy just broke up with his boyfriend of 4 years because he was cheated on. Yeah we already want to hug Andy right from the beginning. What I loved most about Andy was the fact that even though he had some self-doubt about himself, because who wouldn’t after being cheated on, he didn’t let it rule him. He started his new job, embraced new people, went out when asked, made new friends, and joined an Amateur Theater club and became part of an absurd play.

When he meets Phil, who is also sore from a breakup, he refuses to let Phil jerk him around with his own self-doubt. He gives Phil a chance but when he falls apart he doesn’t hide and drink, he gets back up and keeps going. Don’t hate on Phil give him a second chance… Andy does.

That was my favorite part. Andy’s strength. Now it was also hilarious and the actors were dramatic and chaotic. I mean there’s a cat fight, a ridiculous play, all sorts of romance, and an ensemble that is built up beautifully.
This is the start of a great series.

Do you believe in love at first sight?

Sanford Stewart sure doesn't. In fact, he pretty much believes in the exact opposite, thanks to the Homo Jock King. It seems Darren Mayne lives for nothing more than to create chaos in Sandy’s perfectly ordered life, just for the hell of it. Sandy despises him, and nothing will ever change his mind.

Or so he tells himself.

It's not until the owner of Jack It—the club where Sandy performs as drag queen Helena Handbasket—comes to him with a desperate proposition that Sandy realizes he might have to put his feelings about Darren aside. Because Jack It will close unless someone can convince Andrew Taylor, the mayor of Tucson, to keep it open.

Someone like Darren, the mayor’s illegitimate son.

The foolproof plan is this: seduce Darren and push him to convince his father to renew Jack It’s contract with the city.

Simple, right?

Wrong.

Review

TJ Klune is by far the best at comedy. I'm just going to say that and get that out of the way. I've never laughed as hard as I do than when I read his books.
That said, The Queen and the Homo Jock King has GOT to be one of his best works! This is book 2 in his At First Sight Series. Book one Tell Me It's Real was just as side splitting. But, this one (and I didn't think it was possible) had me laughing even harder. Sandy/Helena is my spirit animal. Oh my word! I never. I don't have words for the awesomeness that is Sandy/ Helena. And Paul (his BFF) he is just as fabulous in this one. But the family?! I want just one holiday with them. ONE! And a group chat session!
Darren... poor Darren. So, my heart was sad for him at times. And he wants Sandy and I get why. And what Sandy puts him through? LMFAO! I can't breathe just thinking about it.
I love that this was a long book but it didn't feel like a long book. I could have read these characters for days. I wish I could join this world TJ Klune has so brilliantly created. This is one of the best books I've read this year by far!
AMAZINGLY done, TJ!

Guest Post about Shawn's Law by Renae Kaye #Review #Giveaway

Renae Kaye has a new book coming out on March 6th! I have had the great pleasure of reading an advanced copy and WOW! You'll love it. Today Renae has a little post for you, and a giveaway. I have my review of the book and of course, did you see this fabulous cover by Paul Richmond? Wonderful.

So what does Renae have to say? Let's read....

I don’t pretend to be a ‘serious’ writer.  I don’t mean that I’m a writer that doesn’t take her work earnestly.  I mean that I don’t write real, angsty, serious stories.  One of my first reviews on Goodreads about my debut story Loving Jay, was that it was a piece of fluff.

I took this as a compliment.  *grin*

Life’s too short to be tied up in knots and agony.  I’d rather be tied up in stitches and laughter.  So there are a few things to remember when reading this book.

1.  Don’t forget your sense of humour.

2.  Don’t read in public unless you don’t mind others staring at the “crazy person in the corner.”

3.  Keep your distance from others while reading, because you may spit as you burst out laughing.

4.  Check to make sure the floor is clean before rolling around on it in laughter.

5.  It’s fiction.

(Bonus hint: if you have a weak bladder, pack a change of undies).

If you’re feeling down, or if you need a good laugh, then pick up Shawn’s Law.  You will be taken on a topsy-turvy adventure with poor, poor Shawn.  You see, accidents just happen around him.  To him.  By him.  To people near him.  In Shawn’s family, they don’t call it Murphy’s Law, they call it Shawn’s Law.

Poor, poor Harley.  I mean – all he wanted was to date Shawn, and instead he gets to meet a whole bunch of people he never expected.  Like the doctors at the Emergency Department and all the nurses in the hospital.  People like the repo guys and the auto-breakdown guys who know Shawn’s name and address off the top of their heads.  And who can forget Shawn’s family?

Now, you may be put off by the term “several deadly Australian animals,” but let me reassure you – no one dies.  No one loses a limb.  No one loses an eye.  So yes, there’s a snake – but that’s what anti-venom is for, isn’t it?  And yes, there is a spider bite – but you will find out that no one has died from a redback spider for decades.  And yes, there is a…  Well – maybe you should find out for yourself.  Because there are also several cute and cuddly animals – like quokkas.  And majestic animals like Carnaby’s Cockatoos.  And if you don’t know what either of those are, then you’re in for a treat!

So now, the most important questions?

1.  Is it HEA?  Of course.

2.  Does anyone die from the attacking wildlife?  No.

3.  Will I laugh?  I believe you will.

4.  Where can I buy?

Blurb:  Shawn is single, twenty-nine, the full-time career of his Alzheimer’s-stricken mother and a frequent victim of Murphy’s Law—although his family call it Shawn’s Law.  Other than caring for mum, his day consists of painting nude men and spying on the guy who walks his dogs along the street every day at four o’clock. When he takes a spectacular fall on his front steps, who is there to witness it other than the man of his dreams?

Harley doesn’t believe in Shawn’s Law – but he soon changes his mind.
The two men make it through a memorable first date and Shawn’s sexual insecurities to begin a relationship stumbling toward love.  But when Shawn’s Law causes Harley to be injured, Shawn is determined to save Harley’s life the only way he knows how—by breaking up with him.  Not once, but twice.  Throw in a serial killer ex-boyfriend, several deadly Australian animals, two dogs called Bennie, a mother who forgets to wear clothes, an unforgiving Town Council, and a strawberry-flavored condom dolly, and Shawn’s Law is one for the books.

My Review:
I was SO lucky to get an advanced copy of this book! I am a huge Renae Kaye fan so of course I was excited to read this! It's not often a book can make me laugh until my sides hurt. The last book to do that was Tell Me it's Real by TJ Klune. Shawn's Law is HILARIOUS. Side splitting. Pure entertainment. A book about: Is is bad luck or is it good luck? Either way, it's freaking funny. Renae went all out and I can easily say this is the funniest book I've read this year. I highly recommend you read this book!

Renae will be giving one luck fan a copy of Shawn's Law! ON RELEASE DAY! This contest will run until March 6th and the winner will be notified via email (So check your spam folder)

I want to thank Renae for being here today and for writing yet ANOTHER fabulous book! Good luck to you all!!!
