Synopsis

When it comes to fun in the sun, Steve and Jeff are burning hot.

Steve Anderson is a sommelier and the owner of a successful restaurant, although he prefers to keep that titbit to himself and a select circle of close friends. His orthopaedic surgeon husband Jeff is equally successful in his chosen profession. However, they play as hard as they work, and not only is Jeff a beloved husband, but he’s also a precious sub.

When they’re invited to a summer barbeque aboard a friend’s yacht, they don’t hesitate to accept. The theme is ‘a life on the ocean wave’, but Steve has very particular ideas about costumes…and the kind of fun they’ll have. For the couple, a pirate captain and his naïve captive will take on a whole new dimension for playing out a scene.

However, when someone tries to come between the Dom and his sub, they quickly learn their mistake, leaving Steve to show Jeff just who he belongs to.

Steve is nothing if not inventive when it comes to his husband and sub, Jeff, and their sex life. He has to be what with their different schedules. With Steve busy as the owner of a restaurant and Jeff as an on call orthopedic surgeon, they snatch moments when they can—often in an unused closet of the hospital. Still they make it work and life is good—until an old acquaintance of Jeff’s shows up at the hospital and sets out to ruin his reputation and marriage.

In many ways I wish Pelaam had stuck to just the relationship between Steve and Jeff and their onboard escapades at the costume party in the short story, Molten. The side event between Jeff and an old nemesis was, at best, a distraction and presented Steve as very arrogant—something that fits with his Dom status if he and Jeff are at play but not a great trait in real life. Still I cannot deny the set up at the party and their relationship overall is highly erotic and fun to watch. There is no denying the smoldering chemistry between these two men and their genuine love for each other. The clever back and forth as the characters they go to at the party is done so well and with a lot of tongue in cheek humor. The reading audience is in on the set up from the beginning making it even more fun as others are completely unaware of their game and the many ways Steve has prepared Jeff to keep him on edge sexually.

For a quick short story featuring a loving relationship that is a nice representation of the D/s lifestyle I think Molten hits it out of the park. It is a sexy fantasy come to life and who could not enjoy that!

Jason loves his life. With most of his time spent building his business in fine wines and often sailing aboard his private yacht, Jason doesn’t want for anything material in life but a boyfriend is another matter altogether. He tells his right hand man/secretary Kris that he’s just too busy to date but both men really know otherwise. Jason would like to have someone in his life but has fooled himself into believing otherwise. It’s not till Kris sets him up on a blind date that Jason finally sees what was right in front of his eyes all along—someone to love and cherish.

Pelaam offers up an insta-love romance in their contribution to the series, A Little Bit Cupid Collection. The Moment draws on that instant where a person just knows what they’ve been looking for in a partner is standing right before their eyes—now they have to be brave enough to grab for the love that’s being offered. Jason is a successful man—his wine business is booming and he sets his own corporate hours—often using his yacht to take him to meet new clients. His best friend Manu is skipper and first mate all rolled into one while his secretary Kris keeps him and his schedule running like a well-oiled machine.

Jason has everything but love and he figures who needs that when everything else is going so well? It will take a series of events to open his eyes. First he will see his secretary threatened by a violent stalker, then he will be forced to go on a blind date complete with costumes and masks in order to assuage an old friend and after he will finally see that what he’s been needing has always been there—just waiting for him to open his eyes and grab it.

As short stories go, The Moment was fairly complete and never felt as though we were just shoved down into the middle of a man’s life and expected to understand all the players and what was at stake. Instead we are given all we need to understand the different characters and I must say that other than the oddly swift and unfinished scene about Kris having a stalker this story delivered quite a nice little romance. I felt that plot point was just thrown in in order to jolt Jason into realizing how much he needed and enjoyed being with Kris in and out of the workplace. I just wish that we had some kind of closure beyond that short scene or seen more explanation than the little we were given. Kris, compared to Jason, was a more shallow character as a result of not delving into his background just a bit more. Still, The Moment delivered and gave us a short and sweet Valentine romance just as promised.

When they find the link is Aiden, who is being used by a practitioner of the dark arts to conjure a demon of fire, it becomes a race against time to save him from becoming the final victim and thereby unleashing one of the most powerful fire demons ever known.

While Luke must try to protect Aiden and Lyall from a demonic force, Garen must face the demon’s summoner.

Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of violence, descriptions of corpses and some homophobia from a minor character.

Aiden has had no luck in finding love—his latest boyfriend dumped him via text and Aiden angry and hurt—cursing his inability to hang on to love.  His friend, Farrah, has a crazy idea—go to a new shop where spells and charms were sold giving a person more luck at finding and keeping love. On their first visit there’s something not quite right about the shop that makes Aiden uneasy but after giving it some thought Aiden returns alone and gets a charm. When he and Farrah go out for a night on the town so Aiden can test out the charm he meets Lyall, a gorgeous man who is definitely interested in getting to know Aiden a whole lot better.

Across town Garen, a special investigator of paranormal activity, and his husband Luke are called in to investigate a murder—a man found burned to death in his bed. A month later another death occurs and Luke is sure that someone is trying to summon a fire demon and must be stopped. Somehow Garen and Luke must find the connections between the murders and figure out how to stop the person behind the conjuring. A link is discovered and it involves Aiden—now they must all work as a team to save Aiden’s life and send the demon back to hell.

Sex Spells by Pelaam marks the beginning of a new series by the author and introduces us to the duo of Garen and Luke who will no doubt be featured in the subsequent books. This was a very fast paced novella—one that I hope will end up seeing some serious expansion as the series continues. I was really intrigued by how connected Garen and Luke were and their ability to find and fight the supernatural. However, there was such limited information on either man and very little in the way of world building so it felt as though we were dropped down into a place where we had little idea of what exactly was going on.

Because the relationship between Garen and Luke was so strong I really found myself eager to know more about how they met and what exactly they had in terms of psychic powers. Aiden and Lyall were really more secondary characters for me even though it was their love story and Aiden’s mortal danger that was the focus of the novella. Sex Spells was a good story—it had some exciting moments and great energy. I do hope that more backstory will be forthcoming on Garen and Luke as we watch new adventures unfold for them.
