Random Review: Escape (The Omega’s Alpha #2) by R. Phoenix #Review #Giveaway

Title: Escape
Series: The Omega's Alpha #2
Author: R. Phoenix
Self Published

Synopsis

Omar expected his time in Salvus to be difficult, but he had no idea what was waiting for him there. His crash course in just what it means to be an alpha in the beta-run city has taught him that there’s no mercy for him… and his goal of rescuing his mate seems impossible — because now he’s the one who needs to escape.

But fleeing Salvus isn’t the only goal. Omar and Van’s tumultuous relationship has always kept them at odds, and even being mates hasn’t helped them to set aside their differences. Even if they escape, they might not be able to overcome the distance between them…

Review

THIS story was one big rollercoaster of thrilling events, feelings all over, suspense everywhere and it had an amazing plot! I just read it in one sit, breathless.

Ahhhh! Van is still irritatingly compliant. Living with Nathaniel makes him crazy but he still doesn’t turn his back. Salvus is not the promised land Van hoped to find. It’s worse than he ever could imagine.

Salvus civilians have crazy rules. There are Betas ruling, Omegas breeding, and Alphas...? Just read it!
Nathaniel gave Van (and me) a constant whiplash with his different actions. As if he wants to be good for Van and on the other side, he is still from Salvus.

Omar failed to find, or if necessary free, Van. Instead, he is kept hostage by betas from Salvus.
No way to ever get free and unknowing what will happen to him. He only knows he’s hurt.

Then, there is light at the end of the tunnel. From an unexpected corner, he is finally free and Van is there. They find shelter at Jason and Chester’s place. Van and Omar, as mates together, were never simple and now Van has to confess something to Omar. He’s so afraid to tell him.
The rollercoaster isn’t over, there’s still a threat outside!

I had to look twice to like Van, he acted so stubborn and seemingly superficial, I didn’t like him instantly but along the way, I respected him more and more, and at the end with his decisions, I loved him even more! Omar seems the reasonable and empathetic one toward Van. Van can’t handle sweet; he thinks is annoying.

Both men were extremely stubborn, throughout the whole story and this stayed consistent. Greatly done!
The whole story was, viewed from all angles, original, all characters, main and secondary were extraordinary, just like the environments. This journey kept me constantly alert, anything could happen. I love it when a story does that!

It was a heart-stopping, freaking thrilling story! Also amazingly captivating. It was hot, steamy, full of suspense, quite angsty at times and thank goodness there was even some mild tenderness. The end? Was just what my romantic heart hoped for

Review

His First Christmas is an MPreg Christmas tale. So, that has to be something you enjoy in order to enjoy this. Bo is a sweet, scared, abused, and adorable omega who is going into labor. Of course it's in the middle of a snowstorm, an his car dies. Gabe is a veterinarian who is a lone wolf of sorts. He spends the holidays alone every year. While that was super sad I did wonder how that was possible with as many friends he seemed to have. Why didn't any of them ever ask him to join them? I did expect there to be no one in his life but that wasn't true so I was curious about that.

Gabe takes a lot of crap from people in this story when assumptions are made and I was really in awe of him for taking the heat on it. Bo's fear was believable and so were his reactions. Standing up for anything was never something he did and his strength needed to be built.

All in all this is truly a sweet story with a fairytale-esque feel to it. Perfect holiday fun and lots and lots of love!

Excerpt

“And where would you go?” I challenged. “You’re not running from a person, you’re running from what you wish you had.”
“And what is that?”
“Your father’s respect as a man,” I answered, even though he didn’t want me to. “You think you’re going to earn that by running away?”
“I’ve been trying to earn it all my life,” he spat. “It leads nowhere. I might as well start living for myself.”
“You might. And if you did, I wouldn’t blame you,” I admitted. “But you won’t.”
His eyes smoldered. “And you know that how?”
“Because I know you,” I replied, pressing his hands to the brick. His eyes widened in surprise, and I stopped short of kissing him, letting myself study his features instead. He was incredible out here in the moonlight, and I wanted to tear his clothes off so the light could kiss every inch of him I longed to touch. “You don’t just give your life to this pack to make your father happy. You do it because it’s in your blood. You are an Ursache through and through, and the heart of this pack beats in you. You can’t leave it any more than you can leave yourself.”
“And you?” His eyes burned, daring me to tell the truth. “You’ve been planning your exit since we were kids. Planning to leave me and everything else behind.”
I looked away because I couldn’t meet his eyes and deny the truth.
“Just be enough of a man to say it,” he demanded bitterly. “If that had been Dominic you saw tonight, you’d already be gone and I would never see you again.”
“What do you want me to say, Mason? That I’m going to stay here forever and just forget the man who killed my family?”
He stared at me and just when I was sure he was going to push me away and tell me to fuck off, he kissed me. He kissed me and I was too shocked to kiss him back until he pulled away. “What was that for?”
“I love you.” Another sucker punch. How was I supposed to respond to that? Those words I’d only heard in my dreams.
“I…how long?” It was the only thing I could think of to ask, even though I knew there were four words I should have said first.
“Since we were kids,” he answered, stuffing his hands in the pockets of his coat. No hesitation. “Since you kissed me by the river just for the hell of it and started laughing.”
The memory was lodged in my brain somewhere between the last day of school and the first time I killed someone. I’d all but forgotten, but it was obvious that he hadn’t. I didn’t know what to say.
The weight of what we were doing came down on me. Yes, I was drunk on the thrill of it, and I wanted to chase that high as far as I could, but I’d never given any thought to the fact that when it all came crashing down, he and I would be falling from different heights.
“Mason, I’m sorry. I had no idea, I…”
“It’s fine. You don’t owe me anything,” he said, shrugging. “You didn’t back then and you certainly don’t now. I’ve tried to change the way I feel about you ever since then, because even when we were kids, I knew it wasn’t going to lead anywhere. Then, when you went away on that mission and came back a different person, I knew your heart belonged to someone else, even if it was only filled with hatred. I accepted it, but it doesn’t change the fact that mine is never going to belong to anyone else.”
I swallowed all the things I wanted to say. Things that would make it better in the moment, even if they made it so much worse in the long run.
He was right, no matter what my heart said. Out of the two of us, he was the only one thinking logically. One day, it really would be more than a hallucination. Dominic would come around and we both had a date with death. There was no room in my heart for what Mason was talking about. What he already claimed to feel for me.
I wished it were different. God, I wished it were different, but it wasn’t and it was cruel of me to expect him to play pretend for the time being when it had never been a game for him at all.
“You’re right,” he said, clearing his throat. “I should go inside.”
I watched him walk through the doors and even though I was still a member of the Ursache pack for the foreseeable future, I had never felt more on the outside of it.

Two men haunted by the same ghost…

Falling for “the other man” in my marriage was never part of the plan. Then again, according to Nicolae Ursache, I am the other man, and human wedding vows don’t apply. Not to werewolves.

Nicolae is a smug, arrogant alpha male stereotype--and I do mean alpha in the literal sense--but when the same people who killed my wife kidnap my teenage daughter, he’s my only chance at getting her back. The fact that Nicolae was my wife’s rightful mate means that we share a mutual interest in bringing Ellie home, but I never could’ve imagined how he planned to do it.

I will do anything to protect my daughter. Even if it means becoming the plaything, or worse, of the man I loathe most.

Heat of Love Series

Book #1 - Slow Heat - Amazon US | Amazon UK

Blurb

A desperate young alpha. An older alpha with a hero complex. A forbidden love that can’t be denied.

Young Xan Heelies knows he can never have what he truly wants: a passionate romance and happy-ever-after with another alpha. It’s not only forbidden by the prevailing faith of the land, but such acts are illegal.

Urho Chase is a middle-aged alpha with a heartbreaking past. Careful, controlled, and steadfast, his friends dub him old-fashioned and staid. When Urho discovers a dangerous side to Xan’s life that he never imagined, his world is rocked and he’s consumed by desire. The carefully sewn seams that held him together after the loss of his omega and son come apart—and so does he.

But to love each other and make a life together, Xan and Urho risk utter ruin. With the acceptance and support of Caleb, Xan’s asexual and aromantic omega and dear friend, they must find the strength to embrace danger and build the family they deserve.

This gay romance novel by Leta Blake is the second in the Slow Heat universe. It’s 130,000 words, with a strong happy ending and a well-crafted, non-shifter Omegaverse. It features alphas, betas, omegas, male pregnancy, heat, and knotting. No cheating. Content warning for brief sexual violence.

Review

While this is book two in Leta Blake's Heat of Love Series I will tell you that you can absolutely read this as a standalone. I have read both books and while I love revisiting characters Alpha Heat focused on Xan and Urho's story.

This was SUCH a unique story and putting into words how it made me feel and the message the author pushed forth may be difficult. This world is one that has strict rules. Alphas are to be with Omegas. The end. So what happens when an alpha wants to be with another alpha? And what happens when one alpha feels, to their bones, they are truly an omega? And what happens when you're an asexual omega who must deal with heats.... There are SO many what if's in this world and one at a time the author tries to deal with them. Personally, I thought she did it brilliantly.

The underlining parallels to our society didn't go unnoticed by me. It won't for you either and it shows that while love is all powerful it can not change minds, it can not fix law, and it doesn't always extinguish hate.

Alpha Heat is just as amazing as Slow Heat and I positively adore this series for more reasons than I have time to put down in this review. It is Mpreg so if you don't like that thing, well, yeah.

Leta Blake shows no matter what genre/subgenre/trope, she's writing in that she knows how to drill into those emotions and pluck them right out of you. She doesn't butter up the serious subject matter she deals with it.

Bravo to this author!

Blog Tour: His Taken Omega by L.C. Davis #Excerpt #Review #Giveaway

BLOG TOUR

Title: His Taken Omega (Mountain Shifters #11)
Author: L.C. Davis
Publisher: Self-Published
Cover Artist: Wolf Conan
Release Date: December 3, 2017
Length: 70 000 words/260 pages
Genre/s: M/M shifter Mpreg romance
His Taken Omega is a standalone story within the Mountain Shifter universe.

 Blurb
Nicholas wants nothing to do with omegas, and Avery has already signed a contract binding him to another Alpha. Fate has other plans for them both.
As the omega spokesman for the infamous Futurus Initiative, Avery Callahan is a controversial figure who’s used to being envied, occasionally despised and always the center of attention. His kidnapping at the hands of the twisted omega at the helm of the radical anti-Futurus group known as Epsilon shook his perfect world to the core, and Avery’s abnormally conventional parents no longer know what to do with him. In a last-ditch effort to save their son’s reputation—and his engagement to a prestigious politician—the Callahans send him to the small, idyllic pack of Southbend for some much-needed rest and recovery.
When Avery arrives in Southbend, he finds the Meyer household anything but welcoming and he immediately clashes with the rakishly reluctant head of the household. Nicholas might be a brilliant lawyer with good looks and charm in abundance, but he makes no secret of the fact that Avery is persona non-grata in his pack. How is Avery supposed to heal his own wounds when an Alpha who looks at every omega with disdain makes him question everything, including his participation in the breeding program he’s devoted his life to promoting?
~
Nicholas has it all on the surface—rising-star status as an attorney with his own practice, a sizable inheritance and the option of going home with any omega he chooses at the end of the night—but beneath the mask of his status, he hides a secret that makes him feel unworthy of the title of Alpha. Past abuse has left him with a deep-seated revulsion towards omegas, the very class of shifter he’s supposed to crave. He uses work and meaningless flings with other Alphas and betas to distract himself from the family life he
doesn’t believe he deserves, but in the wake of his estranged father’s death, Nicholas is called home to take on a role he never wanted.
Forced to give up his high-profile career and take the reins of his family’s pack, Nicholas finds himself wholly unprepared to fill the shoes of the man he hated. Because fate isn’t cruel enough, the Spirits choose this moment to send him his destined mate—a charming yet infuriatingly stubborn omega he can never love or even claim. At least, that’s what he thinks until he realizes that the very traits that repel him from other omegas draw him to Avery in a way he finds as bewildering as it is intoxicating.

Review

His Taken Omega by LC Davis is a shifter Mpreg story. Though there’s only one or two scenes where there’s actually shifting it is there.

I was utterly engrossed in this story. What a unique plot. I love when an author really gets creative and takes a typical story and builds on it fabulously.

Nicholas is forced to be the alpha after his father’s death. He’s spent his life hiding as a famous lawyer. He never wanted to return home to a life he fled from many years ago. When we first meet Nicholas’s family, I have to say I understand why. But it was more than that and as his story unraveled it broke my heart.

Avery is a celebrity in his own right. He’s the spokesperson for an organization that matches Omegas with Alphas. It’s more complicated than that but I don’t want to get into the technical and give anything away. Avery is brought to Nicholas’s pack to recover after having a breakdown. His backstory is also very sad.

These two guys fix each other. Seriously, there’s no other way to say it. They are destined for each other and it filled me with so much joy to see them complete each other.

There’s a fantastic story here and it weaves and turns and comes full circle beautifully. I really enjoyed it.

Excerpt 2
“Well,” Nicholas said, coming to a stop in the middle of the town square. “This is the great metropolis of Southbend. What do you think?”
“I think it’s lovely,” Avery said, hesitating. “And very, very rural.”
“It is certainly that.” Nicholas grinned. “Should we head back? You must be tired after your trip.”
“I am,” Avery admitted, falling into step beside him. “Guess I am here to relax.”
“That’s what I heard.”
“What else have you heard?”
Nicholas wasn’t sure how to respond. Avery gave him a knowing look.
“You can be honest. You won’t hurt my feelings.”
“It’s nothing bad, if that’s what you’re thinking.”
“I guess that depends on whether you consider the public face of the Futurus Initiative having a nervous breakdown in the middle of a fundraiser to be a bad thing.”
“Everyone knows what you went through. You’re a hero. If they’d judge you for that, they’re not worth the time.”
“It’s been three months,” Avery murmured.
“Three months is barely enough time to enjoy summer break, let alone get over being kidnapped.”
“Maybe you can tell my parents that. They’re convinced I’m irreparably broken.”
“You don’t look broken to me.” Nicholas pretended to look the omega over for damage. “Maybe a small dent right here,” he said, poking the dimple on Avery’s cheek that deepened when he smiled.
“Either way, it looks like I’m stuck here until I can convince my parents of that.”
“That makes two of us. For what it’s worth, it’ll be nice to have the company.”
Another lie, but at least this one was for a worthy cause. It wasn’t Avery’s fault that an Alpha with an irrational aversion to omegas—or at least intimacy with one—had imprinted on him.
Avery was there to recover, not to find a mate when he already had one. The more Nicholas reminded himself of that, the better. His aversion had kept him single into his early thirties, so surely he could manage to control the hormones and irrational impulses for the few weeks Avery would be staying with them. Once he went back, both of their problems would be solved. Avery could go back to his life as the Futurus golden boy, and Nicholas could sleep a little easier knowing that he wasn’t going to imprint on the next omega who walked into his office looking for help.

In the meantime, he just had to fight the urge to commit the greatest sin of his profession: telling the truth.
