New Release Review: Eryx: A Spartan Tale by Jaclyn Osborn #Review #Giveaway

Title: Eryx: A Spartan Tale
Author: Jaclyn Osborn
Self Published
Publication Date: February 6, 2020
Length: 504 pages

Reviewed by Jenn

Synopsis

My father once told me, above all else...
Live and die for Sparta.

Honor. Loyalty. Duty. These were the things that mattered most.

And then Axios came into my life, teaching me other lessons: humility, brotherhood... love.
There were moments when the brutal training stripped me of my humanity, where it turned me into a mindless beast of flesh and muscle set to destroy everything in my way. But then Axios stood in my way, ever vigilant, never failing to bring me back to myself.

Love had no place in Sparta, they said. It made you weak.

So why did I feel stronger with him by my side?

*Eryx: A Spartan Tale is a 149k word historical gay fiction featuring a love story between Spartan warriors. Although told in an alternate point of view of the events in Axios, it includes extended scenes and more content. It can be read as a complete standalone.*

Review

I admit that I was thrilled when Jaclyn Osborn announced she’d be writing a follow up to her incredible novel, Axios. This time we get Eryx, the epic love story told from Eryx’s POV with added content.

Eryx and Axios’s story is a love story for the ages, one that can only be described as EPIC! Axios and Eryx are born as Spartans and have their whole future planned for them from birth. They are meant to be warriors for Sparta and if they’re lucky…they’ll die an honorable death fighting for their home, for their people. This is a story of strong warriors who are brave enough to die for Sparta, but strong enough to want to live for each other.

If you read Axios, you may think you know this story already, but you don’t…not all of it. As we see the world through Eryx’s eyes and heart, we get something completely new and still as tragically beautiful as Axios’s version. Eryx is a Spartan through and through, he seems to live for duty, for training, to serve his purpose. But there is so much more to Eryx, there is something more important than duty and war…there is Axios.

Now is where I tell you that I can’t say anything more about the book itself because of spoilers. So I will tell you how this book made me feel. Eryx’s love for Axios is so incredibly pure, so big that I’m not sure how he carries it all in his heart. I was in tears so many times while reading this, its beauty overwhelmed me at times. Seeing Eryx from the boy we meet to the man he becomes is an eye opening journey. I understand his loyalty, his work ethic, his belief in their way of life so clearly now. The bonds Eryx forms with his friends, his teachers, and some of the other warriors is so fun to watch. Seeing the very serious warrior tease and play shows us a whole new side to him and I found myself smiling at seeing joy from this boy and from the man he becomes.

But nothing and I mean nothing comes close to seeing the love he has for Axios. Each conversation, each small touch, and every stolen moment together feeds Eryx’s soul and touched my heart so completely. I found myself no longer thinking of Eryx as a warrior, but as a warrior poet. Strong and deadly on the outside with an inner strength and a poet’s heart. I didn’t think I could love this story more than I already did, but I was wrong. Reading this book was a joy and a privilege. The amount of work Jaclyn Osborn put into this book has to have been insane. Matching timelines, conversations and so many little descriptions…it’s all so flawless. This book reads like the author’s love story to her warriors, you feel how beloved these characters all are to her. When you decide to go back and do something more to a story as cherished as this one, it has to be frightening endeavor. Jaclyn slayed this book, she gives us everything we could wish for and so much more. This book is a perfect example of what happens when you put together an incredible determination to get it right and pure talent. I cannot shout my recommendation for Eryx: A Spartan Tale loud enough.

The Nymph Prince
Tales of Fate #2
Release Date: February 27, 2019
Length: 434 pages

 Synopsis

Spoiled, arrogant, and reckless. It's a miracle Lorcan had survived so long. As a nymph, he was rare. As crowned prince and the son of a god? He was a treasure unlike any other. That never stopped him from putting himself in danger and fighting against his duties by leaving the golden palace beneath the sea, though. In search of him. A pirate who'd long since captured his attention. Possibly his heart.

Alek didn't choose his life of secrecy and pain. Magic was considered a great evil and anyone found with mage blood was killed. Abandoned after his town was destroyed, he was left alone and starving in the streets. Until the captain of a legendary pirate ship found him and gave him not only a purpose in his life, but also a home. That home was gone now.

When Lorcan finds Alek, wounded and breathing his final breaths after a sea battle, he does the only thing he can: carries the pirate away from the destruction and stays with him so he doesn't die alone. But Lorcan soon realizes that the pirate was more powerful than he ever imagined. Even for a mage.

With both men on the run from bounty hunters and rogues of the sea, the two journey to Lorcan's underwater kingdom. Beneath the waves, their strong connection grows even stronger and their lust intensifies. Alek finds the nymph to be sarcastic and spoiled, and Lorcan finds the mage to be secretive and stubborn, yet their hearts have never felt more whole. Just as they're tearing down the wall between them, the reveal of a dark destiny threatens to rip them apart. A war is coming and decisions—and sacrifices—must be made.
Can two souls brought together by fate weather the storm?

 Reviews

Jaclyn Osborn is one of my absolute favorite authors. Her story telling has brought me to my knees with tears of heartache, has brought me joy with humor, and has giving me hope with undying love.  Now with these two books she was able to bring me into the world of myths, legends and a bit of fantasy.

Found at Sea, tells of a tale of a brutally awful and cursed Pirate Captain with one brown eye and one blue. Through, many drunken sailors the tales only grow more and more. Where patrons really didn't know which stories were truly real and which were just tales past down.

Fletcher has heard so many tales of pirates, mermen, mermaids, of a beautiful castle that is under the sea. He loves the tales and is easily amused at the drunken sailors who believe in what they say. He was orphaned young, lived on the streets and was lucky to be found and given a room at the tavern with work.

Fletcher's life changed in one day! He finally took upon himself, and then ran off. Leaving the only home he ever knew to be found by that Private Captain with one brown eye and one blue named Kellan.

Captain Kellan knew of the tales and although some were untrue most were not. He put fear in everyone even his crew members minus Fletcher. That boy had no problems with questioning his authority and asking an abundance of questions.

Fletcher's eyes became more open and the tales were no longer tales and the Captain was more than what anyone knew.

Their love was undeniable but that curse that was put on Kellan was heartbreaking. However, Fletcher showed him that love was a gift no matter the time.  This story was so magical and I loved it being about a pirate.

The Nymph Prince, was more on the legendary side. Alek was found by Captain Kellan as a kid and was saved. No one but the captain truly knew what he was. Alek and Fletcher have become very close and when the attack  happened he begged to be killed. That had broke my heart when it happened but when I read that arms had surrounded him, I was hopeful that there was more to his story. I was definitely excited when Alek got his book.

Alek's character was a little more complicated for me. I was unsure what exactly a mage was. So I was thrilled to learn more about him in this book.

Lorcan was absolutely incredible. What a magnificent character he was. A stunning beautiful merman and nymph the last of his kind. The love and devotion he had towards Alek was overpowering.

Those two faced so much turmoil at times it broke my heart. Their love was so strong. Those two were able to fight against the odds together. Alek's journey was a dark one Lorcan's gift sometimes left him feeling anguish over the things that were to come and not quite knowing how or when or even if he could somehow stop them.

These two books books are an absolute must to read.

Saturday Author Spotlight: Jaclyn Osborn #Interview #Giveaway

It's Saturday and that means it's Saturday Author Spotlight day! YAY! Today the outstandingly talented Jaclyn Osborn is hanging out with us. If you haven't had a chance to read this author you truly are missing out. She writes for all genres. From YA to historical. If you look through her books you will find one that calls to you. We are going to sit and talk with her about books, life, things. Take a look at her books, and wrap it up with a giveaway. So, get comfy!

Noah’s Song

Noah Derwin knows what it’s like to be different. Being a seventeen-year-old kid in high school with blue hair, piercings, a mostly all black wardrobe, and an obsession with zombies and video games, he doesn’t exactly blend in. But he never wanted to. His two dads raised him to always stay true to himself.

Bastian Hunter prefers structure and predictability. Suffering from a rare disease, every day is a challenge for him, and he prepares for the future by excelling academically and denying who he really is. Everything changes when he meets Noah, the unpredictable variable in the equation he’s built his life around, and feelings he's hid for so long begin to surface.

Being gay in high school isn’t exactly rainbows and butterflies, and Noah has definitely faced his fair share of bullies. Moving to Port Haven, Oregon opens up new possibilities for him, and he starts falling for the quiet, brown-eyed boy from his English class. Too bad the attraction is one-sided… or is it?

Scars We Hide (Cadbury #2)

Trust makes you vulnerable. Weak. Peyton Evans learned that lesson long ago. Being shuffled between foster homes since he was five, and then surviving for so long on his own, he has kept a wall around his heart. The abuse he suffered at the age of fifteen refuses to fade into the past, and the scars it caused impact him every day. He’d thought he’d found love before, but that relationship showed him once again that trust only led to more pain.

Struggling with an addiction he developed as a teenager, Torin Hayes found himself one screw up away from going to prison and decided to get clean. But a sudden incident threatens to send him back down that rocky path, and he fears people will never look past his intimidating appearance and will only see the tattooed delinquent he’s been labeled as for years. Moving to Cadbury, Oklahoma is his only way to start over.

When the two men meet, the attraction between them is far from instant, but Torin’s persistence blurs Peyton’s opinion of him as a tattooed bad boy who will break his heart and shatter him all over again. Peyton’s scars run deep and make it hard for him to let go of his fear and accept a love he doesn’t feel he deserves. But, when it comes to matters of the heart, even the most strategic plans can change.

*Trigger warning: This story contains content that may be sensitive for some readers. The triggers are: drug/alcohol abuse and flashbacks of sexual abuse including rape. This is Book 2 in the Cadbury series, but can be read as a standalone.*

Axios: A Spartan Tale

I am Axios of Sparta, and I was born to kill. At age seven, I left home to train with other boys where we were taught obedience, solidarity, military strategy, and how to withstand pain. My harsh upbringing stripped me of my weaknesses and forced me to become strong. Ruthless.

But, I craved something greater—a life I could never have.

Against all odds, and the toughest training a warrior could endure, I found an unexpected love in the arms of a fellow Spartan. He was the very air I breathed and the water that sustained me. Fighting side by side with him, we were invincible. Where he went, I followed.

However, there was no place for love in Sparta. Feelings were for the weak. The only life for a Spartan was one of battle and brutality with no guarantee of tomorrow. In times of war, all men were put to the test, but the greatest challenge for us was not one of swords and spears, but of the heart.

*M/M Historical Romance set in Ancient Sparta*

Kane’s Awakening (Awakening #3)

“I built a wall around my heart and refuse to let anyone in.”
Rookie cop Kane Matthews doesn’t believe in love and is only interested in random hookups. It’s easier that way. Less complicated. He learned years before that opening up to people would only cause pain when they screwed him over. At twenty-four, he has no desire to settle down.

“I want someone who will stay by my side. Someone to love and grow old with.”
Defense attorney Ryker Carson is a romantic at heart and is looking for his Mr. Right, but after several failed relationships, he doubts he’ll ever find true love. But that doesn’t stop him from trying. At thirty-one, he’s the father of eight-year old twins, and he needs a man who will accept not only him, but his family as well.

Kane and Ryker couldn’t have been more different, and yet, when they randomly meet in a club one night, their attraction is undeniable. Hot sex in the club soon turns into more, and Kane is faced with one of his biggest fears: commitment. Ryker is drawn to the sexy, arrogant, and unfiltered Kane, even though he suspects only heartache can come from it.
When an incident at Kane’s work leaves him emotionally vulnerable, the two men grow closer and sparks fly. However, Kane’s fears and troubled past catch up to him, threatening to push away the one man who’s ever captured his heart.

*This is Book 3 in the Awakening series and can be read as a standalone. There are trigger warnings for this story, and a list of them can be found using the Look Inside feature on the book.*

Interview

Thank you, Jaclyn, for being here today and talking with me. There’s been a lot of exciting things happening for you this year and I look forward to talking to you about them.

-Thank you for having me!

First, tell us three interesting things about you that we wouldn’t read about in your bio?

-Hmm, I'm not that interesting honestly haha
       1. I'm a huge history nerd, and I can read about Ancient Greece and Rome and be entertained. That's also why I wrote Axios: A Spartan Tale, I put my love of history and my passion for writing together.
2.      I can't whistle.
3.      I love all kinds of music. Alternate rock like Black Veil Brides and Bullet for my Valentine to movie score soundtracks like Lord of the Rings.

Kane’s Awakening Just released. This follows a series? Can you yell us a bit about the book? Obviously it’s not a standalone.

-Actually, Kane's book can be read as a total standalone :) the main characters are new. Side characters from the other two books make very small appearances, but you don't have to have read them to understand.

This book was a type of therapy for me, honestly. After I finished writing Axios, I was in a total depressive slump. And then Kane came to me. He was absolutely obnoxious and made me laugh, and before I knew it, I was writing like crazy on him. His story is about learning how to heal from the past and having an open mind—and heart—for the future. Kane and Ryker made me fall head over heels in love.

Conversations with Kane is something you started on SM. Will this continue with him or will we maybe see some conversations with other characters?

-Oh! I love this question! I'm so happy that Conversations with Kane caught on so well. It's something I plan to continue for sure. Even though his book is finished, there might still be some posts with him :) but it's something I'm going to do with each new character. My characters have always talked to me, but I never thought people would want to read our weird talks haha so I'm excited people like it.

Let’s talk about Axios. WOW! That was an experience that book. How much research did you have to do for this?

-Thank you! And holy crap, the research for that book was INSANE. Fortunately, I already knew a lot about Sparta from school and college (nerd, remember? Haha) But there was a TON I didn't know. I also chose a time period where there were soo many wars going on. Sparta was the enforcer of the peace treaty, so anytime there was conflict, they were brought into it. I spent MONTHS researching for Axios, and even as I was writing him, I had all of my research materials beside me the whole time. I loved it, though. But I certainly need a mental break before I jump into another historical.

While Axios is a love story (in my opinion) it’s an epic adventure as well. Teetering on the edge of tragic. If a reader asked you what it was about without telling them the end what would you say?
-Hmm. I'd tell them it's the story of a man who doesn't like the hand he's been dealt. He wants more out of life. Sparta was such a war-hungry society. Men were born and raised as soldiers; they had no choice of a different life. It was live and die for Sparta; that's all. But Axios sees the beauty in life and he has such a questioning mind. He wants to travel and experience all that life has to offer—to swim in the bluest waters and run through the greenest of fields. And to love. His greatest friend is also the man he loves and the other half of his soul.

You attended GRL for the first time this year. Tell us about your experience?

-Wow, it was both nerve-wracking and exciting. I met so many amazing readers who made me tear up with their kind words, and I met some incredible authors. It was great to finally put faces with names haha

What was your favorite thing about GRL and would you go again?

-My favorite thing was the people: meeting the readers and also the Cocky Boys. I went with my best friend and I got to meet my other best friend (Nicky James) for the first time. Honestly, I'm not sure if I'd go again. But maybe :)

How can your readers follow your work? Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Website?

-I have an author page they can follow on facebook (JaclynOsborn Author) or they can send me a friend request! I also have Twitter and Insta.
Twitter: @jaclyn_osborn

Can you tell us what we all have to look forward from you in 2018?

-First of all, I'm so freaking excited for next year. I have a LOT planned! More Young Adult books, including a sequel to “Noah's Song”. I also plan to write more non-contemporary books. This is the FIRST place I've announced this :) as a reader, I love paranormal, fantasy, etc, and I'm finally going to delve into those topics as a writer too.

There is a pirate chattering in my head. He's wanted his story told for over a year, but I kept putting him off. But he's FINALLY getting a book.
I'm also going to introduce a new book series, involving a group of sexy, immortal warriors. It's a series that I had in my head even before I wrote Michael's Awakening, so it's been a long time coming. It will be more like an urban fantasy. Modern day, contemporary setting, but with magic intertwined and hidden within.

COVER REVEAL: Axios: A Spartan Tale by Jaclyn Osborn #Excerpt

Genre: Historical M/M Romance

Synopsis

My name is Axios Leontius of Sparta, and I was born to kill. At age seven, I was torn from my mother’s arms and left home to train with a group of other boys. We were taught obedience, solidarity, military strategy, and how to withstand pain. My harsh upbringing stripped me of my weaknesses and forced me to become strong. Ruthless.
But, I craved something greater—a life I could never have.

Excerpt

“These boys have shown their cowardice,” Gaius said, stepping between me and the boy and putting his large hands on our shoulders. “What do we do with cowards here in Sparta?”
Boys all started yelling at once. Maim them. Punish. Whip. It seemed they all grew in confidence once the focus was turned on someone else instead of them. They smiled as they shouted their answer, and another boy picked up a rock and threw it at me.
I ducked just in time.
“Enough!” Gaius stopped their chants and walked forward, pivoting on his heels to stare at me and the boy beside me. “As of this moment, you two are a disgrace. But here is your chance to prove your worth.”
Please, no, I inwardly prayed to whatever god would listen, knowing what Gaius had planned.
Many times, I had witnessed the instructors and some of the older men instigate fights between the trainees. It was a way to tease and humiliate the weak. And sometimes it was a way to dispose of them.
“What are you called?” Gaius asked the boy. The boy’s answer wasn’t loud enough, so Gaius punched his arm. “Speak up!”
“Darius!” he answered.
“And you?” Gaius pinned a glare at me.
“Axios.”
He nodded. “Darius and Axios. You are to fight until one of you is unable to continue.” Shifting his stare between me and Darius, he gave a chilling grin. “And if either of you thinks to forfeit, think again. If I see you surrender, I will kill you where you stand.”

Review

Where do I begin with this story? When I see the title of a book, before I even open it, I wonder what the author is trying to tell us with it. The title is Noah’s Song and this book is as beautiful as you can imagine.
Told completely in Noah’s POV we follow this blue haired wonder as he navigates a new school, in a new town, while dragging around a lot of weight. He suffers from anxiety and severe depression and though you may think he drags ass through the book all emo, you’d be wrong.
Noah finds beauty in a square, art in a foggy day, and love in a deaf, nerdy, drama guy who loves math.
I cried throughout this book. I cried for the power of love it held. I cried for joy and sadness. I cried in frustration for these characters, and cried when I closed the book.
Jaclyn Osborn manages to bring you into Noah’s family. She allows you into his beautiful blue haired boy brain. You’re forced to love zombies because that’s what Noah loves and by the end you’re okay with that. He has his bouts of depression and anxiety but he’s about living in the moment, hoping for forever, and embracing the positive. I loved all those qualities about him.
Bastian is special. He’s brilliant, nerdy hot, driven, and he falls head over heels for Noah. Though his home life is way different than Noah’s, it was interesting seeing the two different lifestyles mingle until they just melded together.
Secondary characters are vital here! From Jase, Noah’s brother, to Evan, Bastian’s best friend. All these characters are like the backup dancers to Noah and Bastian’s kick a** performance.
I want more of these guys. I’d love to see how things go for them after high school and I’m a bit curious about Maverick. That’s a character who needs his own story too!
It’s a terrific book. I very highly recommend it!
