Featured Guest: CJane Elliott ~ Let The Re-releases Begin! #Excerpts #Giveaway

Diverse Reader is thrilled to have CJane Elliott on the blog again. It's always wonderful when she comes by. She's talking about her re-releases after she's now self publishing. So, check it out!

Hi, everyone! Thank you to Mere for hosting me today on Diverse Reader. I’m CJane Elliott and I write contemporary m/m books that are on the sweet side. This year I have taken the leap into self-publishing. I severed my ties with Dreamspinner Press and now own the rights to all my titles. I’m just beginning to re-release my books back out into the world of Kindle Unlimited/Amazon, and I’m grateful to Mere and everyone else in our writing community for the support you’ve given me and the other former DSP authors.

For my first re-release, I chose one of my favorite novels, All the Way to Shore. This book is full of tropes – hard-driving CEO, downtrodden owner’s son, ugly duckling into swan, enemies to lovers, hidden identity – and most of it takes place during a Caribbean cruise. There’s plenty of drama and a lot of sweetness.

All the Way to Shore is Book 1 in the Stories from the Shore series and was Runner-Up for Best Bisexual Book in the 2017 Rainbow Awards.

I’m here today with an excerpt I haven’t shared yet and then a sneak peek into my next release, In Over Our Heads, Book 2 in Stories from the Shore.

BLURB

What happens when a cruise ship romance crashes on the rocky shores of reality?

Poor-little-rich-boy Jonathan Vallen, the reluctant heir to Vallen Industries, is more interested in music and gardens. He clashes with new CEO Marco Pellegrini, a self-made man and rising star in business, who is brought in to salvage the company. When they meet again on an LGBTQ Caribbean cruise, Marco doesn’t recognize Jonathan, who has spent a year transforming from an ugly duckling into a very sexy swan. After Marco shows interest and sparks fly, Jonathan reluctantly assumes a false identity, egged on by his cousin Anthony. None of them expect a shipboard fling to deepen into true love.

Back on land, the romance crashes when Marco discovers his perfect man is not only a lie but the son of his boss, Frederick Vallen. Jonathan resolves to win Marco back, but Frederick takes vengeful action. Jonathan and Marco must battle their own fears as well as Frederick’s challenge to get to the future that awaits them on the horizon.

“So? Spill, Jonny! This is so exciting—you and Marco Pellegrini. Divine! You looked so into each other on those deck chairs, me and Sophia almost hated to interrupt you.” Anthony leaned closer to the mirror. “Is that another gray hair? Begone!” He plucked out the hair, then turned to Jonathan, who had fallen onto one of the beds in their stateroom, exhausted. “Well?”

“He’s… nice.” Jonathan stared at the ceiling. “Way nicer than I remember him being. Now I feel awful about lying to him.”

“Oh, honey, don’t even go there. He doesn’t need to deal with your Jonathan Vallen baggage, and neither do you. You’re here to have a fling, remember? Hot sex, hot men, hot tropics, baby! Marco is obviously interested in Jonah Rutledge, so run with that and have a ball.”

Jonathan made a face. “There’s something faulty with your logic, but I’m too tired to figure it out.”

“Well, perk up, doll. We’ve got dinner in an hour, and I want to dress you up.”

“Huh?” Jonathan propped himself on his elbows to peer at Anthony. “This isn’t Formal Night, is it?”

“No.” Anthony leered at him. “It’s Leather Night.”

Jonathan fell back on the bed with a groan. “Kill me now.”

“My advice is to stop resisting and go with the flow.” Anthony pawed through a suitcase.
“Where did I put our leather vests? Tell me more about what you and Marco talked about.”

“Music.” Jonathan smiled, remembering. Who knew he’d find a musical kindred spirit in Marco Pellegrini, of all people? It had been sheer joy talking about the composers they loved. Marco had been flatteringly impressed that Jonathan had attended Berklee College of Music and Jonathan had found himself sharing about singing Bach cantatas and studying piano, organ, and harpsichord.

“Music, huh? That’s perfect for you. And so is this.”

When Anthony held up a piece of leather that resembled a harness more than it did actual clothing, Jonathan sighed. He hoped his nipples wouldn’t be on display—not at the dinner table, anyway.

“He likes classical. We have surprisingly similar tastes. I almost told him about singing in the chorale, but I didn’t want to say anything placing me in Boston after college.” He put a hand over his eyes, remembering his gaffe. “Jesus, I already almost blew it. I told him he seemed different.”

Anthony’s eyes got round, and then he giggled like a bad little boy. “Oh, tarnation! What did he say?”

“He didn’t pick up on it, like that it meant I knew him from before.” Jonathan clutched the bedspread. “Crap, Tony, how the hell am I going to pull this off? Maybe he’ll dump me for someone else tomorrow and I won’t have to worry.”

“Bite your tongue, honey. Here’s what you do: dive into your Jonah persona—wow, it even rhymes!” Anthony did a little dance, singing, “Jonah persona, oh yeah, Jonah persona,” until Jonathan threw a pillow at him.

“What does that even mean? Pretend to be someone I’m not? Not likely.”

“No.” Anthony perched on the edge of the bed and stared down at Jonathan. “You know who you’re not? You’re not Jonathan Vallen—poor little rich kid and self-saboteur. That’s history. Just be yourself. Your real self. Gay, musical, loves flowers and dogs, sweet guy, cute as a button. You’ve never let that guy totally out, and now’s your chance.”

***
Anthony gets his own story in the next book in the series, In Over Our Heads, scheduled to be released in late February.

BLURB

A second chance for romance on a scuba diving vacation plunges Anthony and Walter into deep waters—will they use love’s lifeline or go under alone?

Party guy Anthony Vallen believes in happy endings—just not for himself. He hits Key West for a vacation with friends, ready for some fun in the sun. To his horror, the owner of the local scuba dive shop is Walter Elkins—former scientist, meticulous control freak, and the guy who broke Anthony’s teenaged heart. Despite being as different as two people can be, they fall for each other again, and Anthony’s reasons for shunning romance no longer hold much water. But Walter has his own barriers to love, and whether he will come aboard remains to be seen.

Scuba diving, a hurricane, and a chance to mend a broken heart equal a vacation Anthony will never forget.

EXCERPT

Two bartenders were working that night—a guy and a girl. I figured the guy must be Miles’s “boring boss.” As we reached the bar, I caught a glimpse of his thick dark hair and well-built body displayed nicely in tank top and shorts, but I didn’t recognize him until I saw his profile up close. I knew that nose and those lips. I’d know them anywhere. He turned, and his eyes met mine. For an interminable moment, he stared at me. Then he turned away abruptly, busying himself with the cash register on the back wall.

I clutched Jonathan’s arm and dragged him backward several steps.

“What gives?” Jonathan cast me an indulgent smile, used to my dramatic reactions.

“Look at the bartender,” I hissed.

“Huh?” Jonathan squinted over at the bar. “Who?”

“The bartender at the end. The guy. I think it’s Walter.”

“Walter? Who’s Walter?”

I wanted to slap him. Who’s Walter? Only my first (and last) true love. Only the boy who’d broken every tiny bit of my seventeen-year-old heart—smashed it to smithereens and then stomped all over it for good measure. Only the reason why, despite being a cheerleader for romance, I was alone, always the bridesmaid and never the bride.

“Walter Elkins, you fool,” I whispered. “From Franklin Prep?” Jonny’s blank expression made me want to murder him. “The first guy I ever—”

“Ohhh. Him.”

Marco and Sophia were ordering our drinks from the other bartender, a tough tattooed gal. Walter (if it really was him—I was praying I’d been mistaken) turned away to pull some draft beers, and I saw my chance for escape.

“Oh God, let’s get out of here.” I tugged on Jonathan’s arm. Even hanging around for Miles the Cutie wasn’t worth the sheer humiliation of coming face-to-face with my past.

Jonathan peered at the bar. “How can you be sure it’s him? Hasn’t it been, like, ten years?”

“Twelve, to be exact, but who’s counting?”

Marco turned and called to us. “Jonathan! Anthony! Mudslides await you.”

Shit, shit, shit. Marco would have to use our names at that exact moment. Walter wasn’t likely to recognize Jonathan, who’d left his nerdy persona behind over a year ago, but I looked pretty much exactly as I always had, even in twelfth grade. Blond, tall, skinny, and flamboyant as hell. I was sure Walter had recognized me in those few seconds our eyes had met. And was now ignoring me, giving me a sick sense of history repeating itself.

Sophia said something to Marco in her animated way, music pounded out of the speakers, Jonathan nudged me forward, and I was done. Dead meat. Crocodile fodder. My ghost was wafting to the bar behind which stood Walter Elkins, because the rest of me was disappearing into the worst memories of my life.

Excerpts

Chance for Christmas

Joe found Chance lingering in the entryway to the back hallway, hands stuffed in his pockets, pulling his already snug jeans even tighter across his thighs. He had his head tipped back against the wall and his eyes were closed, allowing Joe to look his fill.
He stared for a long moment, reminding himself of who Chance had been to him. Comparing the boy to the man. In many ways, he was the same guy. That dark, glossy hair just a bit wild about his face. That smooth skin, more tan than pale after years spent in California but still just as creamy.
Yet, there was a strength to him that had been missing when he was younger. His sweater fit him like a glove, stretching across shoulders much more capable of carrying a burden than the day they met.
“Hey, Joe.”
Joe looked up into the gray eyes that were the most telling feature in Chance’s transformation from boy to man. Instead of eyes pleading for a rescue, Joe saw clarity and confidence.
Chance’s lips spread into a slow smile, and Joe knew he was busted for staring.
“Hey,” he said stupidly.
Unable to come up with a good excuse for looking at Chance like he was a prime cut of beef, he fumbled for something else to say. “Sarah okay?”
Chance glanced down the hall toward the closed door of the women’s room. “I’ll give her five more minutes and then make sure she hasn’t passed out in there.”
“That bad, huh?”
Chance nodded, his eyes flicking up to meet Joe’s. “Guess you know now that our date was a bit of a sham.”
The whole party knew after that outburst on Sarah’s part. Not that Joe didn’t already suspect. He came to know Chance well all those years ago, and that boy was gay.
“I figured it must be. I didn’t know why.”
Chance shrugged a shoulder. “Sarah wanted a date, and I owed her a favor. All her friends are coupling up. You know how that goes. She was tired of being looked on as pitiful for being single.”
“There’s nothing wrong with being single. It’s not an affliction,” Joe said mildly.
“That’s right,” Chance said. “You’re single, aren’t you?”
Joe laughed, but it came out strangled. This was his opportunity — maybe the only one he’d ever get — to ask out Chance. Take him on a date. Be with him the way he wished he could have eight years ago, even if only for one night.
Chance would inevitably leave town again, but Joe could have this moment. If Chance wanted it, too.

Winter Blom

Andy sucked in a sharp breath, going utterly still in his arms, and Lane wondered for a moment if he’d made a mistake. This gorgeous guy had been pinging his gaydar from the moment they met, but maybe it was wishful thinking on Lane’s part. He hadn’t met someone who appealed to him so strongly in a long, long time.
Then Andy made a soft noise against his mouth, and melted in his arms. Thank God.
Lane pulled back to whisper, “So great,” before returning to the man’s lips, this time tracing his tongue along the seam of Andy’s mouth and encouraging him to open for a deeper kiss.
Their tongues met, and Lane groaned, his cock hard in his pants.
It had been a long damn time since he’d been laid. Between being a single dad, working full time and doing artwork — more because it supplemented his income than because he loved it, these days — he didn’t have time to date. Not to mention, he hadn’t felt ready until this past year.
Losing someone you loved was awful. Losing the mother of your child was devastating on two levels: Lane’s grief for his wife had been difficult enough, but watching his son grieve – mourning the mother his son would never have – had been nearly unbearable.
Lane’s hands slid under Andy’s shirt, tracing up the bony knobs of his spine.
He’d been right; Andy’s skin was as soft as flower petals. He thought back to the flower he’d begun crafting in his garage that afternoon — the daffodil, a flower he hadn’t created before. A flower that represented new beginnings. He knew because Christy had been a florist and she’d drilled the symbolism of flowers into his head every chance she got. She’d been passionate about them, and now it felt like a sign.
This was right. He had her blessing.
Andy trembled in his arms, kissing him with little finesse but enough passion Lane didn’t care. He was unraveling under Lane’s hands, and that was good enough. More than good enough.

Yours For The Holiday

“Hey,” Jason said quietly. The bed dipped as he sat down on the edge of the mattress. “You okay?”
“Oh, so you’re done avoiding me?” Remy said, hating the bitter edge to his words. He swallowed hard, trying to gain control over his emotions, so he didn’t make a fool of himself yet again.
“I’m sorry,” Jason said. He sounded sorry. Truly regretful.
Remy pushed up, struggling into a seated position against the headboard. If they were going to have this talk, he wanted to look Jason in the eye.
Swallowing hard, Remy forced out words that had been nagging at him all day. “I’m sorry too. I got carried away. I didn’t mean to pressure you—”
“God no, Remy,” Jason interrupted. “No, no. It wasn’t like that.”
Jason’s hand hovered in the air. Remy watched Jason hesitate before resting his big palm over Remy’s thigh. The blankets formed a barrier between them, but the point of contact burned as if he could feel the warmth spilling from Jason’s hand.
“Then I’m confused,” Remy said.
“I, uh, find you very sexy,” Jason said, voice tinged with embarrassment. It would be charming if it weren’t for the heavy topic of conversation. “But I need the Wells family. I don’t talk about my parents much, but—”
“I know it’s not great,” Remy said. “Dad filled me in on what happened last summer with your mom.”
“Yeah,” Jason said. “So, basically, I’m terrified of fucking everything up. If I go there with you, I might hurt you. And if your parents or Derek find out, I’m not sure what they’d do. It’s just … messy.”
“It doesn’t have to be,” Remy said. “It’s just some fun. No strings needed. And as for going there with me, don’t you think the cat’s already out of the bag? You’ve had your hand on my dick.”
Jason glanced at Remy’s crotch, unable to resist teasing him. “Cat’s out of the bag? And here I thought pussy only referred to—”
Remy slapped his hand over Jason’s mouth. “Don’t say it!”
Jason chuckled, his warm breath gusting over Remy’s palm. Remy shivered as their eyes locked and held. When the wet tip of Jason’s tongue licked a stripe over his hand, he couldn’t hold back a small moan.
“Fuck you, JJ,” he muttered, pulling his hand back. “If you’re going to say no, don’t fucking tease me.”
“I’m not saying no,” Jason said roughly. “I probably should, but I can’t say no to you again. Not one more fucking time.”

At the height of it all, their punk rock band catapults to stardom.

Their lives are marred by secrecy, deception and sacrifice.  Feelings of betrayal, backlash from the sensationalistic media and threats of blackmail send them down a hard road filled with tough decisions.

Excerpt

Jessi let the warm water from the shower spray onto her face.  She was happy.  Tommy was happy.  Angel was happy.  Their much needed talk at the breakfast table set some ground rules.  Angel was open to communication and encouraged it.  It gave her comfort.

After she showered, she meandered back to the bedroom, as she towel dried her hair.  Tommy and Angel were already naked and in each other’s arms on top of the unmade bed.

“What took you so long?” Tommy asked, before returning his lips to Angel’s neck.

Jessi didn’t answer.  She wanted to watch.  She leaned against the doorway and folded her arms.  She watched Tommy kiss Angel with an urgency that she never saw before, and the love that Angel had for Tommy was never clearer to the naked eye than it was right now.  She knew they were in love.  It didn’t scare her as much as she thought it would. The confidence she had in their marriage overshadowed her fears and doubts.

Her thoughts were pushed aside by the sound of Tommy moaning and breathing heavily.  Angel was stroking Tommy and sucking on his nipples.  Jessi let the towel around her body drop to the floor and crawled into bed, on the other side of Tommy.  She glided her hand up his back and kissed his shoulder.  He immediately turned onto his back, so that he could share himself equally between her and Angel, and he kissed her.  Her mouth moved to his chest, and she could feel his heart gently beating underneath her lips. She kissed her way down his torso and her tongue crawled across his skin.  It accidentally collided with Angel’s mouth.  They both looked up in surprise and shared a smile.

She wasn’t sure what Angel was thinking, but she wanted to kiss him.  Fear of rejection made her hesitate, but it was unwarranted.  Angel grabbed her by the back of the neck and firmly planted his mouth on hers.  His tongue invaded her mouth and bathed its circumference.  She was spellbound by the intensity of his kiss.  She couldn’t think about anything else except Angel’s warm, authoritative tongue inside her mouth, and she immediately felt warmth and wetness between her legs.  Now she understood why Tommy had that dreamy look on his face whenever Angel kissed him.

Angel withdrew his tongue, but she wanted more and placed a long kiss on his lips, hoping for another visit from his magical tongue.  But he just smiled at her, and then moved his mouth back down to Tommy’s belly.

Tommy pulled her up and kissed her.  It was like night and day.  Angel’s kiss was forceful and commanding.  Tommy’s was slow and soft.  She loved the tenderness in which he slowly moved his tongue in gentle, purposeful circles around her mouth, but she found herself still reminiscing over the kiss she just shared with Angel.

When Jessi Blade finally catches up to Tommy and Angel four weeks into their world tour, she begins to feel like an outsider.  She’s not about to take a back seat to Angel and competes for Tommy’s attention.  Tired of the rivalry, she begins to wonder if they’d be happier without her.

Angel Garcia is trying to hold their relationship together, but Jessi’s animosity and Tommy’s nervous tension is a heavy load to carry.  Before long, it becomes clear that their life and the band are doomed unless they work out their differences.

Excerpt

Jessi put the last finishing touches on her sketch and put it down for the night.  She had two gorgeous men in the next room who were probably sucking each other off right now.  Her footsteps quickened into a little trot across the room in anticipation of watching Tommy and Angel together, but when she got to the bedroom they weren’t in bed.  They were naked, erections flying high and rifling through a suitcase.  “What are you doing?”
They turned toward her at the same time.  Each held something in their hands.  Angel had a small flogger.  Tommy had a purple sash.
Tommy snapped the sash in his hands.  “We’ve been thinking.  It wasn’t very nice of you to leave us in the middle of the tour and not explain why you resigned.”
Angel twirled the ends of the whip so they danced in the air.  “Yes.  You’re a bad girl and bad girls get punished.”
Her mouth widened into a nervous smile.  “You’re not hitting me with that thing, Angel.”
“Oh, yes I am.”
Tommy was twisting the ends of the sash around each fist and pulling it tighter.
They slowly walked toward her wearing matching sinister grins.
She took a step back.  They couldn’t be serious.
Tommy held up the sash.  “It’ll hurt less if you cooperate.”
“Tommy!”
He lassoed her around the neck and pulled her to him.  She held her breath, braced one hand against his chest and tugged at the sash.
“Stop fighting and take your clothes off.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Stop stalling,” Angel warned.  “It’s better if you listen to him.  He’ll be less . . . angry.”
Nervous laughter trickled from her throat at this new game.  Tommy was always bossy in the bedroom, but with Angel, not with her.
Tommy raised his brow, impatiently waiting for her to discard her clothing.
She contemplated the game at hand, still unsure whether or not to continue.  It had been a life-changing month.  Why the hell not?
She slipped her top over her head, discarded her bra and wiggled out of her jeans.  She stood with her shoulders back and projected her breasts outward.  “Do you like what you see?”
Tommy gazed at them and puckered his lips, but he didn’t attempt to taste them.
She cupped both breasts in her hands and pushed them upward to entice him.  When he still made no attempt to touch her, she placed his hand on her breast.
Angel was quick to swipe it away with the handle of the whip.  “She’s trying to weaken you.”
Something changed behind Tommy’s eyes and they hardened.  “Is that what you were trying to do?”
She stammered for an answer.  She didn’t know how to play this game.
“Get on the bed.”

She didn’t hesitate and waited on her knees in the middle of the fluffy king-sized bed.  Her heart was beating faster, full of nervous anticipation.
Tommy crawled in front of her while Angel came up behind her and tied the sash around her eyes.
She didn’t resist, but her knees were shaking.  She never played a submissive role before.  There was a sense of mystery about being blindfolded, but she wasn’t sure if she liked it, or the helpless feeling that went with it.
Angel adjusted the sash over her eyes to make sure they were fully covered.  “Turn around and lie down.”
She obeyed.  If it got out of hand, she would tell them to stop, and she knew they would.
Face down on the pillow, her arms were pulled up and secured to the headboard, loosely tied with another satin sash.  “What are you going to do to me?”  She wished she didn’t ask and she wished she didn’t seem so nervous, but it sounded like part of the game.
Something tickled her back.  It was rather soft and made little flicking noises.  She realized it was the flogger and stiffened as she waited for a harsh blow.
“Are you ready to take your punishment?”  Angel asked.
She held her breath, clenched her jaw and squeezed her eyes shut.  It was silly that she closed her eyes, since she was already blindfolded, but she was so nervous she didn’t know what she was doing.  Despite being wary and anxious, she was tingling all over and felt a trickle of wetness between her legs.  She wanted to play.
“Answer him,” Tommy said.
She gulped.  “Y-yeah.”
“Louder.”

“Yes!”  She tightened her muscles and waited.  The first strike was a quick, stinging flash across her buttocks.  It wasn’t very hard, but it still took her breath away, and there was a tinge of excitement behind the tiny burn.  The second strike was stronger, but it was more arousing than the first.  The third stung like an electric shock and she gasped.  A sharp jolt reverberated through to her groin.  Again there was a pause, and she silently wished for the next blow, wondering what it held.  Dare she ask for it?  It came before she had the chance.  Like a razor, it sliced across her bare skin.  White light flashed behind the darkness of the mask and tiny spots floated in the blackness.  Her buttocks were red hot and that heat pulsated deep between her legs.  Her whimper wasn’t from pain.  It begged for release.
