Synopsis

Brazilian graffiti artist Mateo Amaral is looking for his heaven spot, the one perfect place to paint. His coworker Fletcher Bradford is looking for a heaven spot of his own, and his is even more elusive. Out since age 12, Fletcher's been around more blocks than Mateo has ever painted. He's dated all the jerks, all the creeps, all the losers in between. At 26 he's decided the only way to meet a nice guy is just never to give him a chance to prove otherwise. When he's introduced to Mateo, Fletcher expects to add another notch to his bedpost. But Mateo is different--and from him Fletcher will rediscover a long-lost feeling: surprise. What Fletcher finds in the trunk of Mateo's car will change his life in ways he never imagined--and may help him find what he's always wanted.

From the author of THE CRANBERRY HUSH comes an epic story spanning years and hemispheres and miles of painted walls. At times sexy and sweet, gritty and gut-wrenching, THE PAINTING OF PORCUPINE CITY takes readers along with Mateo and Fletcher on an adventure through the subways of Boston to the towers of São Paulo. Are you in?

Review

There are times when, as a reader, the right book comes along at just the right time. You could be in a reading slump; you know one of those where nothing you see is exactly what you want. You could need a pick me up after having a bad day or being sad. Then there are those times when you want something that grabs you and doesn't let go. That takes you away to a different place. It doesn't even have to be a physical place, just an experience or characters that are unlike anything you've come across before. For me, it was Ben Monopoli's The Painting of Porcupine City. I first read this book over three years ago and when I was done I knew I'd never read anything like it before and it would be a book that would stick with me for a long time to come. Three years later and Fletcher and Mateo still seem as real to me as they did back then.

When I sat down to write this review, I went to Goodreads to see what my review there said. Here a just a few things:

v I started reading Porcupine City (and when you get to the part where Fletcher explains what this means you will never forget it) and from the very first sentence I knew it was going to be different.
v
v The Painting of Porcupine City is not a romance but oh my heavens is it ever a love story?! There is SO much love in this book, it's almost hard to breathe at times. It's not always obvious either, but what happens is this...you read a line or a paragraph and then a few pages later you get this feeling where you can't decide if you want to laugh or cry and it's because that line, those words, are still playing in your head.
v
v Fletcher—what to say about him? There were times I wanted to shake him (one time in particular I think I hated him so much I didn't want to keep going, even though I knew I would) and times where he is so beautifully crafted it is like he leaps from the page. He's definitely NOT perfect, but perfect is boring, and Fletcher is definitely not boring.
v
v Mateo—if there was EVER a character that will stay with me for a long, long, VERY LONG time, it is him. He's not perfect either, but oh how he shines. He'll break your heart, he'll make you smile. He will make you look at everything around you in a new way. I have a feeling that I'll think of him often, think of him in his heaven spot. Mateo is one of those characters that you wish you could invite over to dinner and then pepper him with a thousand and one questions only because there is no telling what his answers will be.

I've got to be honest with you guys, The Painting of Porcupine City is not the easiest book to read. Oh, Ben’s writing is unparalleled—witty, full of gorgeous descriptions, plots that are unique, and characters that you’ll never forget—but his books, this one in particular, WILL challenge you. We all have preconceived ideas of what love and romance are, but after reading this book I promise you with all I am that you’ll think of it differently at the end of Porcupine City. There really isn’t a lot I can or SHOULD tell you about this book because anything I say is spoiling the experience of following Mateo and Fletcher on their journey. You’ll go far, I can say that. From Boston to Sao Paolo, you’ll experience things you’ve never felt before. There’s a touch of magical realism that’s woven throughout the book and though I didn’t really know what to call it when I first read it, I get it now.
Back when I first read this, I wasn’t quite as vocal then as I am now about books I read, but with this one, I shouted from the rooftops. I told every person I knew in my circle, and some I didn’t, that they had to read it. I cajoled and begged and bugged and forced. I’m not kidding. I think EVERYONE should read this book; it’s that excellent.

There’s mystery, hope, joy, crushing heartbreak, and so much love it leaves you breathless in The Painting of Porcupine City. Truly, I guarantee you’ve never, EVER read anything like this book, but if you do, not only will you be changed at the end, you’ll be a fan of Ben Monopoli’s for life. You’ll view those neat and tidy (and I’m not knocking them, don’t worry) HEA’s in a completely different way. They have their place, sure, there is no doubt that this one will stick with you forever. And yes, once you finish reading this book, rush right out immediately and grab The Cranberry Hush and Homo Action Love Story: A Tall Tale. (those are some titles, yeah?) You’ll thank me, trust me.

Review

This isn’t a story I would categorize as romance. Yes, there is romance in it and yes, it is the starting point for these two MC’s but this story is more about the discrimination and abuse that these two, and other people like them, suffer on a regular basis. He executed that part beautifully.

Marlon’s terrible partner on the force is every name you can think to call him. He’s bigoted against people of color, Muslim people, gay people, etc. Andrew gets away with it because his uncle is a powerful Senator and he knows he can push the envelope further than most. My heart broke for Vahin experiencing what he did in this story, the fear he must’ve felt I felt while reading it. The pain that Marlon had to go through when he was outed and even the scene with his mom. Seriously, Brandon Witt has angst down.

This is a contemporary story not a romance. There is a relationship in this book but it's not the focus. Basically right from the start of this relationship Vahin and Marlon have all these outside forces between them, separating them or causing issues. Most of their relationship was off page. The author told us of the connection versus showed us. I get that it’s a pitfall for novellas. I know it’s never easy for authors to fit an entire novel length set of emotions and connections into a novella but it can be done. I would have liked to see more connection with them but understanding it's not about romance made me accept that.

The sex being off page or fade to black honestly didn’t bother me in this story. Maybe that was because the mood that the rest of the story had set or maybe it was in part of my lack of feeling the connection between these two guys. I will say that the title can be misleading as to what to expect from this story in terms of sexy times. Even the two MC’s seemed a bit more kink then we got to see. The ending was more HFN than anything else although it’s still very early (a week maybe) into the relationship.

Overall, the writing was amazing. It flowed and let me sink into that world. The struggle is the main part of this story and overcoming it and love. We all need love.

The effects of an attack on SIN, a twenty-nine year old University lecturer, reach out further into his future than SIN could ever imagine. In a story, which seems doomed to start with an end, SIN learns about the forever kind of love, and how family is not just biological. ‘Soul-Mate for SIN’ shows how twists of fate can take a loving, but ordinary family, from a small market town in Lincolnshire, England and turn them into something extraordinary.

 Character Interview with Gabe (Gabriel)

Hello, what’s your name and where do you work?

Hello, my name is Gabe short for Gabriel and I’m a nurse working for the NHS in the ICU and HDU.

That’s a lot of abbreviations can you tell our readers what they mean?

Oh, sorry. The NHS is the National Health Service, which is our health care system in the UK. I’m trained as a nurse who can work in the Intensive Care Unit, and the High Dependency Unit in a hospital. Intensive Care is where someone will be if they are very ill needing life support care, usually it’s just before and just after major operations or serious downturns in their medical conditions.

High Dependency is where patients go when they are getting better and no longer require invasive life support but are not stable enough for a normal ward.

Do you like your job?

I love it and of course it’s how I met my boyfriend. I like looking after patients and seeing very ill people heal and go home well. I really like getting to know the families as well. I’m quite a people person (Flicks long thick hair and grins)

Can you tell us what you look like?

I’m about six foot (Lol, aren’t we all), but I love to wear boots with high heels, as work demands flats all the time. It’s nice to break out sometimes. Anyway, I have shoulder length dark hair, always tied in a ponytail for work…I’m sort of lean I suppose…my arms are strong, but that comes from nursing. I know gay men are always supposed to be at the gym, but I rarely have time. Oh and brown eyes…I have brown eyes.

So you say you met your boyfriend through your work can you tell us about that?

Um…No not really lol. It would give too much away. I will say it was a very worrying and heart breaking time for his family.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like spending time with …my boyfriend and we like playing games, RPG you know? I love dancing…I mean really love it. I let go of all my stresses and inhibitions when I hear dance music. I love to go out with friends. We all like a gay club in Nottingham called The Rainbow Lounge, even my boyfriend’s parents have been there!

Wow, that’s very unusual isn’t it?

What for parents to go out with their kids? Yes, I don’t think it happens often but it isn’t unheard of and I think if the places are nice sometimes parents of LGBTQ young people like to show their support by having a nice night out together. My boyfriend’s mum had a great time. I think his dad was a bit more hesitant, but he was enjoying himself at the end, although I think Miss Clitty Sparkles was a bit much for him. LOL

I can imagine…I interviewed her recently! Did you see Lady Charlotte at the club?

OMG I don’t think I’d be brave enough to interview her…Yes, we’ve seen Lady Charlotte several times at The Rainbow Lounge but I don’t think she’s appeared there since Christmas, not sure why.

Can you tell us something about Soul Mate for SIN?

Not that much really…Izzy will be really angry if I give away too many spoilers. I get to do some dancing! There are some hard times for some lovely people, but some funny moments too, and I get the love and family I’ve always wanted. Oh and some…private moments but a gentleman doesn’t tell (winks) No animals were harmed in the telling of this story :)

Glad to hear it lol. Thank you Gabe for talking to us today.
You’re welcome anything for Izzy. Thank you.

Izzy is a romantic, a dreamer, a vegetarian and just a little eccentric. Izzy writes because she loves to tell stories, and she hopes that her stories will bring happiness, enjoyment and maybe to some…a little hope.
