Random Review: Want~ A Dark Taboo Tale by R. Phoenix #Review #Giveaway

Author: R. Phoenix
Title: Want~ The Need Trilogy #1
Self Published
Publication date: May 23, 2018
Length: 114 pages

Synopsis

A Dark Taboo Tale

For years, Rex Mirza has been controlling every aspect of his twin brother’s life. Using the fact that Tavi is a magicless witch — a mere human — in a family of powerful witches, he has justified every harsh treatment. All of it is only for Tavi’s own good, of course. How could a human possibly know what was best for him?

When Tavi gets the chance to turn the tables on his brother, will he take it? Or will he take the punishment Rex says is due for trying to run away?

*This is a dark, taboo tale with several kinks that may offend or trigger some readers, including (but not limited to) age play, ABDL, and humiliation. Not every dynamic or element is 100% consensual.

Review

I've read a lot of books with a lot of everything in them. Want is the first I've read where ABDL was involved. ABDL stands for Adult Baby Diaper Lover for those who are not familiar with it. Now, I pride myself on my diversity so when this was presented I went into it with an open mind not knowing what to expect. So here's the low down on part one of R. Phoenix's trilogy.

It's not, what I'd assume, would be a typical BDSM ABDL relationship. First off Rex and Tavi are brothers (Twins) so there's a lingering incestual theme. Tavi is a regular human and Rex is a warlock/witch. They live in a complex time where humans are low on the totem pole and Rex is in charge of his younger-ish brother. And through the years Rex has taken advantage of the control and Tavi found an opportunity to pay his brother back.

That's as much as I'll say about the story because while you see the non-con element, it's building toward something I'm not sure where it will go. It doesn't end with any finality as it is 1 of 3 books in this trilogy. I will say that it was fascinating to learn about ABDL and I am open minded enough to know that while it isn't for me it is something that others enjoy. Rex finds this out, and I am really excited to see how this turns out for him.

R. Phoenix always takes us on a dark path with her writing. She writes the things many wonder and she opens minds to the possibility of all things. Don't dismiss this book because you see ABDL, humiliation, and other not so easily read topics. Give it a chance, you may find you are pulled into this world and Tavi and Rex's story as I was.

Series Review Tour: Matchmaker Series by G.R. Lyons #Review #Giveaway

Matchmakers Series

Second Chances (Book #1) Amazon US | Amazon UK
Second Drafts (Book #2) Amazon US | Amazon UK
Second Place (Book #3) Amazon US | Amazon UK

Second Chances

Nineteen-year-old porn star Remy Dawes loves his job at Matchmakers, a gay nightclub, but the fantasy he portrays every night doesn't leave room for what he really wants: companionship, love, someone to come home to, someone just for him. Who would ever take seriously a kid who practically sells his body for others' pleasure?

Thirty-five-year-old Chance Whitaker has sworn off dating younger men after having been cheated on one too many times, until the owner of Matchmakers convinces him to take a chance on Remy Dawes, a gorgeous kid who surprises Chance at every turn.

As things fall apart through meddling, death, and betrayal, will there be a second chance for two people to find love?

Second Drafts

Novelist Shain Ahren is committed to only one thing: himself. Living alone and having an endless string of one-night stands, Shain's carefully crafted routine ensures no one will ever control him again. But one trick he met at Matchmakers, years ago, he can't get out of his head.

Painter Elliden Crawford yearns to be controlled. Born with an extreme chemical imbalance, Elliden struggles to keep the fits at bay so he won't be a danger to others. Only once in his life did Elliden ever truly feel safe, just one night when he met a stranger at Matchmakers.

When Matchmakers brings them together again, Elliden finally gets what he needs, while Shain's world is thrown into complete disarray. Will Shain ever relinquish control, or will they be fated to remain a discarded first draft?

Second Place

Danny Berringer lives up to the name of his nightclub. Ever since he cheated on Bryan, the love of his life, he's been making up for it by helping others find love. He even matched up Bryan with Eric Grant, except Bryan's perfect marriage seems to have fallen apart, and Danny is dying to know why. He doesn't get couples wrong. Ever.

Bryan Landry had his heart broken by Danny, then had it put back together by Eric, but he can't have Eric anymore, and it's all his fault. He spends his nights at Matchmakers having random tricks and trying to avoid Danny, but the meddlesome matchmaker won't leave him be.

Thrown together through guilt, death, and temptation, Bryan denies his feelings while Danny clings to dreams of Bryan's forgiveness. Will Danny always lose, or can he win second place in Bryan's heart?

Review

I was given this trilogy as a series review. Because each is sold seperate I figured I'd summarize my thoughts of each one and then do an overall review of it as a set.

Second Chances
This is book one of the trilogy. If I had to choose a few words to describe this book I'd say very dramatic, overly in many spots, serious miscommunication between characters, and frustrating.

Just from glancing at the burb I had a feeling these characters would clash here and there. Remy is the saving grace of this story in my opinion. His maturity, his huge heart, and his internal strength. This character had so much sadness in his life. At time it felt like Remy was a doormat and that was part of the frustration for me.

The writing was super confusing with the days and such. It's not a world like our but is.... I know, I can't explain it. Go to the glossery! It's a second chance book... well more like a tenth chance book.

Second Drafts
We're still dealing with the oddity of the different world/day/ week thing in book two. This will be a constant. Creative, yes, but it's clear to me that this is one of those things that will have to grow on you.

I actually liked this book more than book one. The drama was still over the top in places but I felt like the characters were quicker in finding their groove, or the style and world building was just settling in.

Shain and Ellidan are really a great couple. Shain was the victim of all my cursing while Ellidan was the one I felt needed all my hugs. Good addition to the trilogy.

Second Place
This is the finale to the trilogy. It is by far the most angsty of the three. I recognize characters who cheat are a "no go" for a lot of readers and I was nervous to say the least. But I have read the first two and I was invested so I bit the bullet and dove in.

Trying to redeem an already judged character is not easy. The worry wasn't totally necessary. Danny is trying to make up for all the pain he's caused in his life. I actually ended up admiring him and that truly shocked me.

The author ends this trilogy with a lot of ups, and downs, and ups again. Very emotional and heartbreaking is a million places. All of it works toward an HEA but you do WORK for it.

Overview
This is a good trilogy. High on the emotion, drama, and angst scales. Everything was just a bit over the top and I would have liked to see some of these characters act like human beings more than they did. So often things could have been avoided or less confusing had they taken a step back. I recognize that if they all acted mature there would be no conflict. Conflict is okay, but there was just too much. I do recommend this trilogy as long as you can set aside your thoughts on what it is you would have done in a lot of these situations. If you love emotional books that make you cry and yell then be sure to grab this.

Release Blitz: Point Shot Trilogy by VL Locey #Excerpt #Giveaway

Two Man Advantage

Victor Kalinski, all-star forward for the Boston Barracudas, is one of the biggest jerks in professional hockey. Before long his aggressive attitude gets him shipped off to play in the minor leagues.

Furious, he takes to the ice with equal amounts of skill and scathing sarcasm, which doesn’t win him any friends—except for good-natured alternate captain Daniel Arou. He won’t take any of Vic’s crap, and he won’t take no for an answer.

But Vic’s troublemaking is pulling his career one way while Dan’s talent is pushing his in the other. However much they scorch the sheets, they might soon be separated by more than Vic’s fear of being hurt.

Game Misconduct

Life has been treating Victor Kalinski well, which is a surprise for the ginger-haired forward with the venomous tongue. His career is somewhat stable, at least for another season. His relationship with Cougars alternate captain Dan Arou is deepening, despite the fact that Daniel has yet to come out of the closet.

It’s typical Kalinski luck when a puck bunny he shared a drunken night with several months ago slaps him with a paternity suit. Despite the sizzling passion and painfully heartfelt connection between them, Dan doesn’t take the news well, and heads back to Canada alone.

If he wants to make things right and win back the man he loves, Vic has no choice but to swallow his pride—and nobody’s prouder than hotheaded, ego-driven Victor Kalinski.

Full Strength

What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, Victor Kalinski was one of the best and most controversial ice hockey players in the pros. This year he’s playing in the minors, has a paternity case pending, and has just been vindictively outed to the world by one of his own teammates.

But he seems to find life in the tiny town of Cayuga to his liking. A large part of that is Dan Arou, the Cougars’ alternate captain and the man who now holds Victor’s heart. Surely venomous, viper-tongued Victor hasn’t been mellowed by love!

Well, perhaps a little. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t intend to get sweet revenge on those who’ve hurt the man he loves and the friends he’s somehow made along the way.

R-Rated Excerpt (From Two Man Advantage)

Lying beside him in the dark, I was thinking about getting under the covers to suck him off when he asked me what I thought about the team.
I shrugged the shoulder his dark head rested on. “They suck, man.” I ran my tongue over my teeth.
“Think so, do you?” he enquired. “I hate that sound you make when you suck air through your teeth.”
“Um, yah,” I snorted, my palm resting on his shoulder. “I mean, no offense, but if not for you that bunch of losers wouldn’t have the few wins they do. And tough shit about the teeth sounds.”
Dan’s exhalation blew over my nipple. It puckered up into a tiny pink bead. I really wanted to get oral on this man. He seemed to be chatty, though. I didn’t dare comment on how girly that was. My ass was still recovering from the last slur against his manhood I’d made.
“You’re right,” he confessed, sitting up against my wishes to turn on the light. I squeezed my eyes shut and bitched about the wattage. “You think you could help us out?”
My nose wrinkled. “Dan, man, look, maybe if I were going to be here for the season, yeah, I’d be happy to pass along what tricks I’ve learned. But this trip is just for a week or two.” I had hoped he would drop it as soon as I weaseled around. He didn’t. His blue eyes stayed glued to me. “Arou, man, don’t make this harder than it is. Why don’t you just turn out the light, lie down and let me get you off again?”
I saw the desire flare up in his gaze. “I’d consider it a favor if you gave the other guys a hand. They’re buddies, you know?”
“Whose buddies? Not mine. They all fucking hate me,” I countered, pulling him back to the bed.
He flopped down with a sigh of exasperation. I rolled over him and began tasting his neck. He was just as bound up in this crazy thing we shared as I was. His neck and jaw tightened as he worked to fight the fire trail where my tongue and lips moved over him, but the nudge of his erection against my stomach showed he couldn’t control the need for me any more than I could handle my need for him.
“That’s because you’re a dick,” he ground out as I tongued his navel.
I agreed, then licked a long trail across his belly.
