Review

Now that the turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie has been devoured--leftovers, yum!--let us also take a moment to give thanks for the awesome that is Charlie Cochet's THIRDS series. For Sloane Brodie and Dexter J. Daley. For Ash, Cael, Seb, and Hudson. For the Destructive Delta team. For Sergeant Tony Maddock. For every single character, whether good or evil. The THIRDS series is one of a kind. It's been a long and twisty, often hilarious, sometimes heart breaking, road to get to this point. We're not at the end, yet, but we are wrapping up one adventure before moving on to the next.

And what better way to end on a high note than with a wedding? I mean love and happily ever after, is there anything better? However, this is the wedding of Sloane and Dex we're talking about so you know things are bound to go haywire. Boy does it ever! A kidnapping, bad guys, flying bullets, and more. Gah! Tried and True was a roller coaster from beginning to end.

Sloane and Dex have come so, so far. From the beginning when Dex was tripping into Sloane and Sloane was mired in guilt and grief until now, when they are true partners, mated, madly in love, and about to be married, it's been a hell of a journey. In this book, Charlie gives our guys one last mission before they head off to TIN. I don't want to give anything away, but suffice it to say, Destructive Delta kicked some serious ass. This is the action I've been dying for Charlie to get back to and she really delivered. It was action packed and nail biting and I loved every moment of it.

Not to be outdone by the guys and girls being the badasses they are, there is still a wedding that needs to happen. There were many quiet, tender moments between Sloane and Dex that are guaranteed to melt your hearts...and the sexy times to melt other things. Emotional moments between Tony and Dex and ones with Ash and Sloane. Don't worry, there's also plenty of shenanigans, hijinx, and all the laugh out moments you've come to love and expect.

Charlie has given her fans some of everything in Tried and True and it is the perfect ending to this part of the Sloane and Dex saga. Some lingering questions are answered, loose ends tied up, while leaving the future wide open for our favorite THIRDS agents. I am really excited about what Charlie has in store for our dynamic duo (and their merry band of partners in crime) and can't wait to see what happens next!

Review

If you're a THIRDS fan, then you probably have an idea of what Dexter Daley's bachelor party could possibly contain. If you're guesses are shenanigans, hijinx, and mayhem ... well, you know your Dex pretty well! In Gummy Bears and Grenades, Charlie Cochet has given us a bachelor party no one is liable to forget anytime soon.

All of your favorites from Destructive Delta are present and accounted for (sans Tony, but more on that in a minute). Of course there couldn't be a party for Dex without Hudson and where Hudson goes, there's Seb. My favorite though has to be seeing Zach and Austen together, well not together together, but neither would miss Dex's party and if they happen to watch one another a little too closely then so much the better. The party is pretty much what you'd expect from this group ... with a few surprises thrown in. I won't spoil anything, because really, as with most books in the series, it's best to just read and experience all the craziness for yourself.

I will say this though, there were a few parts that shied away from the over the top hoopla of the bachelor party. My favorite was the quiet time Sloane and Tony spent together while the others were getting their party on. Tony is always such a softie when it comes to his boys and this brief glimpse is no different. On top of that, Sloane has to be mindful to keep his and Dex's involvement in TIN from Tony which causes no small amount of guilt. I just really appreciated Charlie's acknowledgement of the pitfalls Dex and Sloane face in their upcoming endeavor. Things aren't liable to be easy for them, a fact which both guys readily admit. The other part was the super sexy striptease Sloane privately gives Dex. It was *fans self* ... and not a side of Sloane we see very often. Plus there's a special uninvited guest to the party and that was all kinds of fantastic.

All that said, this was a fun, angst-free little romp. I will say I'm pretty much over the bumbling, goofiness of Dex (as much as I adore him) and really can't wait for Sloane and Dex with the help of their team and friends to get back to chasing down bad guys. I miss the action and the suspense and the kickass fierceness of the first books. Hopefully once the wedding passes and Dex and Sloane get involved with their missions for TIN, we can see them at all their badass best.

Review

So like any tried and true THIRDS Nerd, I was sooooooo anxiously awaiting Seb and Hudson's book. Ever since we first met these two way back in the earlier books of the series, like many of you I couldn't wait to know more. And really after that cliffhanger at the end of Smoke and Mirrors, I didn't think this book could come soon enough. Darkest Hour Before Dawn is everything you wanted from the brilliant and talented Charlie Cochet. There's action and a bit of heartache and some really funny moments and then, yeah, a few times when your heart will melt all over the place. Not even joking, Seb is just ... *all the sighs*

Like with the other books in the THIRDS universe, you really can't just jump in without having read the preceding books of the series. These aren't meant to stand alone as there are a few plot arcs that continue and if you haven't been following along, you will be lost. And seriously, being a THIRDS Nerd is all kinds of awesome, so if you've been thinking about joining in to see what all the very well deserved hype is all about, don't wait. Anyway, onto Seb and Hudson. First and foremost, Darkest Hour Before Dawn is about second chances. Is there anyone that deserves and needs to be together more than these two? I think not, and after reading more about the how's and why's of how our tender-hearted tiger Therian Sebastian and feisty and stubborn wolf Therian Dr. Huson Colburn fell apart, well, these two are definitely meant for one another.

I won't spoil anything because in true Charlie Cochet fashion, we learn more about what's going on with TIN and Wolf and the strange going's on all around Sloane, Dex, Seb, Hudson, and the rest of the gang. There is a lot of information to process so be ready. There is also a good bit of action and that's always fun and one of the strongest aspects of the entire series. There are feels aplenty as Seb and Hudson work their way back to one another, but I will admit to getting VERY frustrated with Hudson and the way he continued his push/pull thing with Sebastian, not to mention the over the top sense of martyrdom he had going on. Ugh, so not my favorite, but the swoony moments made up for it and Sebastian is just fantastic. The end, as always, was awash with lots of action, some definite surprises, and a driving need for the next book NOW. I am excited to see where the TIN's series takes us and I am really looking forward to getting back to Sloane and Dex and all the badassery that captivated us all as they do their thing to bring down the bad guys.

I am thrilled we got Seb and Hudson's story and it's clear we'll see more of them as the series focuses on TIN and the new developments (just wait!) Charlie throws at you at the end of Darkest Hour Before Dawn. I think we're in for one hell of a ride as we move forward, and I can't wait!

Review

If you're like any of the many rabid fans of Charlie's THIRDS series, then you know we've been not so anxiously awaiting Darkest Hour Before Dawn, which is FINALLY Seb and Hudson's story. We're getting that one this spring--thank goodness!--but Thick and Thin is definitely the perfect appetizer to keep us all satisfied until then. A warning though, if you haven't yet read Smoke and Mirrors, book 7 of the series, do NOT read this one as it picks up right after the end of that book. This is definitely a "bridge" book between the THIRDS series and Charlie's new TIN series so to be honest, there isn't a whole lot of NEW information or anything to get gathered here, more of a tidying up, somewhat, of what's been going on with Sloane and Dex and giving us a glimpse into the future.

When we start, Dex is still dealing with his "changes", Tony is still in the hospital, and Destructive Delta is still as crazy as always. We do get to see Dex and Sloane tell those closest to them what the deal is with TIN, which I was really glad to see. Cael and Tony reacted like I thought they would, and anytime Cael gives Dex shit makes me laugh. With Thick and Thin only being 90 pages (give or take) this is a quick read but it does manage to tie up a few loose ends and sets the stage as to what's coming next for Dex and Sloane. I admit, I'm really looking forward to getting to Seb and Hudson. As much as I adore Dex and Sloane, it'll be nice to get away from them for a bit. And to be really honest, I'm hoping once the TIN series starts, that we get back to what makes these characters and the THIRDS so great ... all that fast paced action and suspense. I love the funny times, I do, but I really hope Charlie gets back to showing Dex and Sloane being the badasses that they are while they take down the bad guys. I'm all for sappy and sweet, but let me see the guys (along with the rest of Destructive Delta) do what they do best and that's kick ass.

Review

As any proper fangirl or fanboy of Charlie Cochet's THIRDS series knows, besides a book release day, the best days are Flash Fiction Thursday's on her blog. Every week, us rabid readers are treated, ne' gifted, little snippets written from prompts offered by fans. These can be anything, from seeing a particular scene from an alternate point of view, to making Dex doing something completely crazy and embarrassing, to Sloane being uncharacteristically vulnerable and emotional. Not only does it keep us readers thoroughly immersed in the THIRDS universe - and damn, who doesn't love THAT - but it gives us an even deeper love and understanding of all of our favorite characters. THIRDS Beyond the Books : Volume 2 is a compilation of all these flash fiction vignettes and this volume is even better than the first.

Beyond the Books Volume 2 is more comedic than the first book. (Who can ever forget the story of Cael getting marked for the first time?! STILL makes me sniff just thinking about it!) From seeing Dex and Sloane going grocery shopping to a Dorito/gummy bear war between Dex and Ash to Lou and Bradley’s first date to Calvin and Hobb’s first Valentine’s Day as a couple, this book has something for everyone. Lots of laughs, but there are plenty of feels and sweet moments, too.

Charlie’s special brand of writing these characters shines through and it’s more than obvious how much she loves all of them. There is so much warmth and joy and love, even in the parts that will punch you in the gut, and trust me when I say these little snippets will make you fall in love with all your favorite guys and girls from the THIRDS universe all over again. Make sure you do yourselves a huge favor and read this second volume of Beyond the Books. It just MIGHT making the wait for Seb and Hudson a teeny bit easier.

Review

If you're like me and a ton of other people, you are a HUGE fan of Charlie Cochet's brilliant, entertaining, and addicting THIRDS series. And if you're as big a fan as me of the books, then of course the audio books are among your favorites as well. Which means that we're all in agreement that there is no doubt that Mark Westfield is THE voice of the THIRDS books.
He does such a fabulous job of giving each character a little something to differentiate them which makes listening to his smooth voice all the better. Funny, sweet, sexy, or angst to the max, these books run the gamut of all the feels. From the strong, stoic type, to the jokester, to the sweet and easygoing guy, to the badass chick, to the gruff and grouchy Sargent, to the guy we all love, these books are chock full of complex, layered characters, each with their own specific nuance and personality. It takes a hell of a narrator to capture all of that and Mark Westfield is a master.
In Catch a Tiger by the Tail, he's given quite the task with Ethan's character, seeing as how Ethan doesn't speak hardly at all due to his mutism. I thought the way he sort of whispers Ethan's thoughts was particularly brilliant and very effective. This book is a bit lighter in parts and Mark captures that perfectly with his cadence and tone of voice and then of course when the action picks up, there's no one better than him to impart all that tension and drama that makes your heart rate speed up and keep you on the edge of your seat. Of course, there are also some very serious moments, especially between Calvin and Hobbs. These are all done so well and you can definitely feel the emotions of each scene.
I'm particularly fond of his voices for Dex and Cael and Letty and there's no one better when it comes to all those "police" sounds like walkie talkies and telephones. Those extra touches add so much to the listening enjoyment. This series just keeps getting better and better and listening to it only makes that more so.

Synopsis

Life for Dexter J. Daley has never been easy, but he’s always found a way to pick himself back up with a smile on his face. Taken from his home, and the arms of his boyfriend and THIRDS partner, Sloane Brodie, Dex finds himself in a situation as mysterious and lethal as the Therian interrogating him. Dex learns what he’s secretly believed all along: his parents’ death wasn’t an accident.

Discovering the whole truth about John and Gina Daley’s homicide sets off a series of events that will change Dex and Sloane’s lives forever. As buried secrets rise to the surface and new truths are revealed, Dex and Sloane’s love for each other is put to the test, with more than their relationship on the line. If traversing the waters of murder and secret government agencies wasn’t enough, something inexplicable has been happening to Dex—and nothing will ever be the same.

Review

I don't think it needs to be said that readers of Charlie Cochet's brilliant and entertaining THIRDS series have been desperately waiting for book 7. Talk about understatement of the year, huh? I mean, when we left our beloved Dex and Sloane and the rest of the Destructive Delta team at the end of Catch a Tiger by the Tail, Dex had been taken, Sloane was beside himself with worry and anger and the rest were bewildered and ready to do whatever it took to get Dex back. And in case you didn't know already, Smoke and Mirrors is NOT a standalone novel. It picks up immediately after book 6, with all the players and plot lines firmly in place, so if you find yourself intrigued by the FABULOUS cover and blurb and haven't delved into the world of humans and Therians, then you need to start at the beginning.

With that being said, there isn't very much I can tell you that won't spoil this exciting, gripping, and completely enthralling book. And believe me folks, you want to do whatever you can to keep yourself spoiler free. Of all the books so far in the series, this one is beyond a doubt my favorite. It could be because SO many questions have been answered (but not all, so don't fear, there has to be more coming!). Or it could be, in true Charlie Cochet fashion and talent, Smoke and Mirrors is like a big budget action movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. It could also be because there were so many twists and turns, things I didn't see coming, that I was constantly being surprised. Though, for me, while all the action and drama was gripping, and I thoroughly love and enjoy the team dynamic and all the members, it was Sloane and Dex that captured my heart and didn't let go. These two, man. I was SO happy to get back to Dex and Sloane. Yeah, they were present in books 5 and 6, but here, in Smoke and Mirrors, we finally get to see them really and truly together. They're adjusting to Sloane's marking of Dex, and all that entails. They're settling into their life as a couple living together. These two are not perfect. I got annoyed at Sloane more than a few times, and Dex, while he's as endearing and sweet as ever, he has his faults as well. But oh god, these two together are what every romance couple should be. Hot, intense and passionate, totally committed to each other, willing to work to make things right when one (*ahem, Sloane*) makes a mistake, and so in love you can feel it jump off the page.

“Sloane?”

Dex’s voice was so low that Sloane wouldn’t have heard him if the room hadn’t been silent.

“I’m here, sweetheart.” Sloane’s voice was hoarse, his eyes hurt, and his chest burned, but he was relieved. Dex trembled in his arms, and Sloane wrapped his legs around him, drawing him in closer against him, offering his body heat. Before he’d been burning up; now he was cold.

Dex looked up at him, but it was as if he couldn’t see Sloane. As if were in some kind of daze. Sloane’s hand was shaking when he placed it to Dex’s cheek. His body temperature appeared to be getting back to normal, and quickly.

“What did I say about those gray hairs?” Sloane tried to smile, but Dex’s weak laugh almost broke him. He buried his face in Dex’s hair and tried to find strength in the man he loved. Dex needed him to be strong.

“Tired,” Dex said weakly.

“I know.” Sloane kissed Dex’s cheek. “Close your eyes. I’ve got you.”

“Don’t let go.”

“I promise.”

*swoooon*

Smoke and Mirrors has a bit of everything that makes a perfect book. Sharp, clean writing, a pace that moves frenetically, but doesn't leave anything out, dialog that's both witty and emotional, humor and sex, but not too much of either. Characters that provoke strong emotions (and trust me when I say there are plenty of times your emotions will go through the ringer!) A plot that's as entertaining as it is suspenseful. And yeah, we can't forget the scorching sex scenes because Dex and Sloane are just ... *fans self* This book was pure enjoyment from the very first page until the last. Bonus for lots of Hudson and Seb, too! Smoke and Mirrors is a roller coaster people, so strap in and get ready for one hell of a ride!
