Synopsis

It's cliché to fall for the cute barista at the coffee shop, but Paul can't help it. Eran's shy smile and heated gaze are driving him wild. Convincing Eran to go out with him, however, is a lot harder than expected.

Eran's been burned before—by family and more, enough to make him jump at shadows and avoid intimacy. But Paul is determined, and with the help of counselors, classes, and an unexpected modeling gig, Eran might just find that taking a risk on what scares him the most, has a worthy payoff.

Review

The story started off kind of sweet. Paul has an eye for Eran, the barista of the coffee shop where he drinks his coffee. Eran is beautiful and very shy. When Paul finally has a date with him, Eran stands him up. The next day Paul asks him why and is shocked to see bruises.
Eran’s life is difficult, living with his sister and her extremely violent partner.
There is an instant attraction and they want to see each other more. Paul is sweet and wants to take care of Eran, he wants to be the one for Eran only it isn’t that simple.

We are a witness to abuse and violence in this story, only it stayed a bit superficial for such heavy content. There were confrontations but it wasn’t deepened.
It was mentioned but more as fact, not as heavy content which should and deserved to be worked out. I had some questions about the addition of this all.
For me, this story was more about their blooming love and their sexual encounters. And there were a lot!

When I focus on the sexual parts I can tell you they were hot and very well detailed with a lot of feelings. All very steamy, easy to visualize and thereby quite delicious to read. Paul and Eran, together, are like a firework.
Besides Paul and Eran there were a few other personalities who were a nice addition to the whole picture.
Overall a nice story, slightly developed, without the abuse it’s a light and sexy story about two sweet guys trying to find their way to each other’s hearts, with an HFN ending.

Paul rested his chin on his hand and watched the snow come down harder outside the window, already sticking to the sidewalks. The roads would be next. It was beginning to look bad for anyone flying into Denver for the holidays.

"Any news?" he asked the man opposite him.

Shelton flicked him a glance then looked back at the text message on his phone. "The airport's still open, but they're worried about ice, and Nevil's plane doesn't land for another hour. It might end up being diverted. Damn this snow."

"It's a week before Christmas. They wouldn't dare close the airport."

"From your lips to God’s ear."

"Anything else, sir?"

Paul looked up into pale blue eyes, clear and earnest as they met his. Men shouldn't be allowed to have such pretty eyes. Especially not when they were surrounded by soft layers of dark hair cut in a bob at the chin, giving the man an almost feminine beauty.

"Can I have another espresso?" he asked, cursing himself for not requesting Eran's phone number instead. Eran was the main reason Paul had started favoring this coffee shop. He'd chatted the young man up, soon realizing he was both witty and friendly, though he danced around any personal questions. That had only intrigued Paul further. What was his story?

They both reached for his empty cup, and Eran pulled his hand back as if stung. Color flushed his cheeks and he murmured an apology as he grabbed the mug and hastened across the room, retreating behind the counter.

Shelton dragged his attention from the snow piling up outside to give him a questioning look. "Why don't you ask him out?"

"What?"

"Don't play innocent! You've been inviting me here for the last two weeks, then ignore me whenever you catch a glimpse of the lovely Eran."

"Sorry, dear. Feeling neglected?"

Shelton snorted. "Save your lines for Eran. But Nevil's coming for the holidays, and I won't be able to play chaperone anymore."

Paul widened his eyes with a sudden thought. "I bet he thinks we're dating. Shit."

Shelton shook his head. "He does not."

A teasing smile curled Paul's lips. "Shelton, you're delicious. If I hadn't sworn off older men I'd definitely be attracted to you. Eran must be playing it cool because he thinks I'm with you."

"I'm not sure that's it." Something in Shelton's tone made Paul give him a closer look. Shelton shook his head. "I think he's interested in you, but something's holding him back from acting on it."

"Maybe he's just shy," Paul suggested.

"It seems more than that to me. Look at him. He's beautiful and sweet. He should be walking around this coffee shop as if he owned the place. Or posing on some magazine cover. Instead, he's waiting tables. He seems fragile. Something's not right…"

Paul missed his next words as Eran approached with his coffee. He gracefully skirted the crowded tables, slim in dark jeans and tee-shirt and the green apron tied around his hips. Paul felt mesmerized as he took the drink from Eran's hands and murmured his thanks. Eran lingered to wipe the edge of their table with a rag, not quite meeting Paul's gaze. Shelton nudged Paul's shin with the toe of his shoe, rousing him.

"Oh, right. Eran, this is my co-worker, Shelton. We work in the loan department at the same bank." Paul motioned in Shelton's direction, sure he was babbling. "I'm keeping him company while his lover's out of town." He rushed on as Shelton snorted and Eran raised a brow. "I mean, we're just friends. If you were wondering," he added lamely.

A smile touched Eran's lips and he leaned over and tucked a strand of Paul's hair behind an ear. "In that case, the shop does close in five minutes, if you want to meet me out front."

Paul gaped at him, and Eran's smile widened, showing even white teeth. "See you soon."

Paul turned his baffled gaze on Shelton as Eran left them. "Did you hear him? Was I dreaming?"

"Merry Christmas. Now let’s go. You don't want to keep him waiting." He waved off Paul’s protest. "I can catch a cab. It’s no problem."

"Thanks." Paul slid money for their drinks and a generous tip under his untouched coffee, then grabbed up his coat. Happy, he surprised Shelton with a kiss on the cheek before they went to the door. Maybe Shelton was right and Eran had a past. But that was what first dates were for, right? To learn about each other? Whatever it was, Paul was sure it wasn't anything he couldn't handle.

Synopsis

Ten years ago, Peter Pan left Neverland to grow up, leaving behind his adolescent dreams of boyhood and resigning himself to life as Wendy Darling. Growing up, however, has only made him realize how inescapable his identity as a man is.

But when he returns to Neverland, everything has changed: the Lost Boys have become men, and the war games they once played are now real and deadly. Even more shocking is the attraction Peter never knew he could feel for his old rival, Captain Hook—and the realization that he no longer knows which of them is the real villain.

Review
I'll be totally honest with you, fairy tale retellings are usually not my thing. But between the absolutely stunning cover of Austin Chant's Peter Darling and the blurb to go along with it, I knew right away that this was one book I could not miss. A queer retelling of Peter Pan? Boy am I glad I didn't. I don't know if I've read a book that was quite this extraordinary in a very long time. Brilliantly imaginative with the most gorgeous, vibrant imagery and a story that while familiar was VERY different from the original, Peter Darling was one breathless surprise after another. Austin Chant is one of the most gifted writer's I've come across—his ability to weave a story that will catapult you to a world you can't even being to imagine is almost mind-blowing.
Though the world that Chant delivers his readers to is one that most will be familiar with—Hook, the Lost Boys, Tinkerbell, crocodiles and mermaids just to name a few—the differences make the story completely his own. There is a mystical, magical, ethereal vibe that is present from beginning to end that really just wowed me. I felt like I could SEE everything and HEAR the waterfalls and the clash of swords or the chittering of fairies. The fact that this is a story about Peter and Hook just made this all the more interesting to me. As a trans man writing about a trans character, I felt Chant's writing of Peter's inner thoughts and his memories were achingly realistic.
Peter Darling is a hard book to review for the simple reason that it's an experience that should be savored. I would absolutely hate to take any of the surprise away. Peter's journey from London to Neverland and back again is emotional, painful, and joyous in turns. His growth from a rather spoiled, devious and almost cruel child to the person who loves and adores James Hook is remarkable. There are moments of gender dysphoria that brought tears to my eyes for the pain and confusion and fear that Peter goes through. As Peter begins to understand the true meaning of Neverland and what he must do to return home ... well, you'll just have to read to see just how magnificent it all is. Peter grows and learns and as he realizes and accepts his feelings for Hook, my heart just warmed me all over.
James grimaced, which was difficult, because his face was mostly numb. "Don't pretend to be concerned," he snapped. "If you really wanted to help, you'd stop making this accursed storm so I could find him without freezing to death."

The queen's laughter was a terrible, discordant clanging that set his teeth on edge. "Oh, James," she said. "It's his storm."

James opened his mouth, then shut it.

"I see," he said at length. "I should have known."

He felt blank. He'd truly thought it was Neverland or the fae or some malicious force of nature trying to wash him into the sea, trying to keep him away from Peter.

But it had been Peter—Peter trying to keep him away, or just raging against the world, thoughtless of what he might be doing to James.

"Haven't you ever noticed that the sun comes out when he smiles?" the queen said. "It's another thing he wished for when he was a boy."

James laughed raggedly. "And all I wished for was a pirate crew."

"He is a far bolder storyteller than you."
This is a beautiful story of love and acceptance. It's a journey, sometimes brutal and sometimes soft and tender. Hook ... man I just loved him. Like A LOT. From his clothes to his speech to his teasing of Peter, he's just fabulous. The Lost Boys, Ernest in particular were such an integral part of the story and let's not forget Miss Tinkerbell and the rest of the fairies, too. All of them have a place. There are lessons to be learned while reading Peter Darling. Don't miss this one people, it's truly magical.
