Synopsis

I've been a fan of R.Phoenix for a while now. The darkness, intrigue, and at times taboo nature, always is done right when she's writing a story. Morgan Noel is new to this genre and is the co-author of Undone. I always like finding new authors and when they join forces with ones I already love it's exciting.

Undone is a log story but extremely fast paced. You literally lose track of time when you get into it and that is a wonderful thing. It's told in four POV's and I know that can be a turnoff for some people, myself included, it wasn't in this case. Only minor issue I had with it was sometimes it took me a paragraph into the chapter to realize who's POV I was in. But it wasn't often. I was so happy it wasn't head hoppy and each character was unique. Nothing worse than carbon copy characters. All four MC's: Kolt, Bryce, Leandro, and Gideon, were original and precise. I loved each of their journeys and how all of them circulated around Kolt... Even Kolt's himself.

The authors give fair warning to readers before purchasing this book that it's dark at times and there is dubious consent and abuse. I won't say I wasn't warned and, in my opinion, when warned you can't complain. I thought, while sad, those scenes were very well done and poignant to the story giving it just the right edge to the climax building.

What happens when a Fae, a Nephilim, and a human fall for an incubus? LOL sounds like the beginning of a joke but that, in a nutshell, is what this book is about. How three different natures fall in love with an incubus. All handle it differently but only one is the victor so to speak.

If I had one complaint it would be the rushed ending. For such a long book that was flawlessly done the ending threw me for a loop. I closed the book with questions I knew I shouldn't have. I can't state them in the review because it would absolutely be a huge spoiler but had it been slowed down and those 2 things addressed this book would be dang near perfect.

I do recommend this to those who love some dark fantasy with an HEA.

And here you have it!!! THIS is the Kol Anderson that keeps me up at night, haunted! Taboo is on novelette number 4. Now, Taboo 1 was pushing the envelope on darkness. I found 2 and 3 to be on a more softer-ish side for this author. I KNEW it was coming though. The deep dark terror. The words that will create visions and those will keep you up all night.

Kol has reached the tip top of the depravity mountain with book four. We see Weldon’s truest form. Though, from the last three books, we knew he was sick in the head. In this one, we see not just the sadist that ripples close to the surface but we see his sociopathy in full bloom here.

There is a psychological element to this story but there’s hopelessness too. And even though this one ended with a glimmer of justice to come, you’re not stupid. This is Kol Anderson we’re talking about here. This can go either way. But one thing is for certain. No matter HOW this ends Jake and Colton will never come back from it.

Like I said…haunting!

You get what you deserve when you read a Kol Anderson book. It’s rarely a happy ending… seriously. If it ends in a happy ending I feel like there’s an extra page lurking that’s about to make everyone blow up.

In Taboo this is volume one of what is sure to be a very dark, gritty, hellish, torturous story. Literally torturous. Jake has a really horrible life. SO SO HORRIBLE! I’m not sure I can express in words how bad things are for him. This is such a short read there’s so little I can tell you that won’t give anything away. 

When it starts out we know Jake has some stuff going on, when it’s made clear how bad it is you wish you could un-know. 

This is not an easy read it’s a dark non-con, dub-con, taboo, big on the torture story so heed those warnings. It’s the beginning of this series that I am guessing will be a bunch of shorts. In each we will get more answers and read more horrible depraved things. But that is what this author is known for and it’s what he writes best. 

So put on your big boy/girl pants and get mindf*cked!

I’ve read this series right from the start and each time I pick it up wondering how the author will make me fall in love with the characters and the harsh brutal environment they live in once again and each time she does it tenfold.

The Travians are a species that hold customs the humans find brutal and cruel, which they are. They take human boys as sex slaves, claiming them through sex, and owning them through brute force. Sometimes the Travian is cruel and abusive, even for Travian standards, and sometimes a bond grows so strong the human and alien do not want to part. The Travian’s have no need for the planet that the humans are occupying but they are determined to get rid of them all the same. Now with a Travian rebellion on the rise they now have their own internal issues to deal with, and fast.

Most of the stories have taken place nearly completely on the Travian ships. The last book gave us a look deeper into the rebellion that has taken root and this one brings us even deeper. I was pleasantly surprised and overjoyed to see this one was not. The setting, on a dust bowl of a planet, was completely different from the previous stories as well as the dynamic between the humans and aliens being subverted. Because this time it was the Travian cadet, who is considered a runt, Wen was the captive of the human Commander Jonathan Dax. A man of imposing size and strength, nothing compared to one of the aliens but strong enough that Wen feels safer with him once he is caught then someone of his own kind.

This one also takes a different route from the others with the dub-con and non-con that were in the previous ones, which I loved, but I must say the complete turnaround from those stories to this one gave it a fresh appeal that I completely loved. Since Wen is Travian he doesn’t see being taken as Dax’s boy as a bad thing or the sexual bond that needs to happen to cement his loyalty to Dax. He understands the custom so he gives himself freely to his new master. 

I thought the mistrust between these two felt realistic and a cause really for a lot of the issue since the mistrust runs not just on an individual level but toward each species as a whole. That one is one aspect of this story that I love watching change with each book and each couple slowly changing the minds of those around them. I cannot wait to read the next one to see how this rebellion among the Travian’s plays out and how the human may or may not help stop it in its tracks!
