Featured Guest: Lynn Van Dorn ~Guest Post #Giveaway

Diverse Reader is happy to have author Lynn Van Dorn, also known as Virginia Kelly, here with us today. There's a great giveaway at the end so be sure to take a look.

Hi! I'm Lynn Van Dorn and also Virginia Kelly. My first novel, Damage Control, was published just over two years ago. Now I have ten titles under my belt, which really seems crazy, and I'm actively working on two WIPs, one under each of my pen names.

I am a very literal person, with an education that was largely scientific, and I can only write things that seem genuine. But Lynn, you might say, Virginia Kelly and Piper Scott write about dragons and egg laying omegas. But even there, I have to make it all real and logical as possible.

My books are all littered with details that I try to make as authentic as possible. I start with something I know a bit about, then research the hell out of it. In my current Lynn WIP, one character has a small herd of cows. So I researched what type of cattle he might have, how many would be an appropriate sized herd, and a bunch of other cow related things. And thus I get things as authentic as I can. I also learn about cattle, which my scientific brain adores. Every book, even every short story I've ever written, contains little tidbits of knowledge that I unearth as I research. I find the process of finding just the right name or detail or even geographical feature for a writing project to be one of my absolute favorite parts of crafting a story.

As Virginia Kelly, I write fantasy. So far, dragon egg mpreg set in Piper's omegaverse: the Forbidden Desires series. Even something as nutsy as dragons impregnating omegas with eggs that later hatch into (adorable) baby dragons had to be carefully thought out and made to make sense to me before I could write it. So Piper and I came up with an entire world within a world where magic and science coexist rather nicely, much like Harry and Everard (from Bond) do.

That's what I love about writing. We all bring parts of ourselves into it. It's why, even given a limited number of possible romance plots/tropes, you could give the exact same plot scenario to ten different writers and you'd get ten very distinctive books. My books are what you get when you have a very scientifically minded person who sits down to write. I joke that my books are 70% sex and talking, but they are, in reality, all steeped in realistic details. Even the sex. Especially the sex.

When you open a book by me, in any of my incarnations, I can guarantee that that you'll either learn something new, even if it's only about how people in a certain region cut their pizza, or find story elements that resonate because you're familiar with them.

This is one of the most satisfying things to me about writing. Happy ever afters that feel like they're happening in a very real world. To experience some of this for yourself, I'm doing a giveaway. You can win a copy of Damage Control on audio and an ecopy of any of my books.

Lynn Van Dorn was born in Ohio and left it for the wilds of Chicago in her reckless youth. She wanted to become a fairy princess when she grew up, but since there are few openings for that position, she makes do with being a writer.

In her spare time, she drinks entirely too much tea, snugs her cats, loves her husband and son, reads voraciously, and avoids housework. She loves to watch anime, travel, knit, bake cookies, and conjure up happy every afters for handsome men who have trouble getting there on their own.
