As a tried and true and diehard, unabashed and unashamed Garrett
Leigh fangirl, you'd think I'd know after reading everything she's
written what to expect when I pick up one of her books wouldn't you?
Well ... you know what they say about assuming things, yeah? Garrett's
new book, Cash, is the second book in her fabulous Lucky series,
and this one packed one hell of a gut punch. Anyone who's read any of
her books knows that there will be angst, often a lot of it, and this
book was no different in that respect. But, it was a different kind of
angst, one I haven't quite experienced while reading one of her books
before and that my friends was not expected.
If you read the first book, Lucky,
you've met Cash already. He's Lucky's best friend and roommate and
though his introduction was brief, it left quite the impression. At
least for me, and I couldn't wait to find out more about this guy. And
boy what I found out! I have to say unlike most of Garrett Leigh's books
which are full of a sort of atmospheric melancholy and a slow kind of
pace where things happen but nothing that really keeps you gasping for
breath. Yes, I know there are some exceptions but for the most part the
journey and the characters drive the story. In Cash, there was
action. A LOT of action. I will readily admit that I am not familiar
with the "sport" of fox hunting except for a passing recollection here
or there, but by the end of Cash, I feel like I could write a
thesis on the subject. This is NOT a bad thing in any way, shape, or
form though. Quite the opposite in fact. Being so immersed in all the
details brought the story to life in a way that only the most talented
of authors can manage.
Rae and Cash were both
captivating and mesmerizing. Both passionate men and willing to
sacrifice for the greater good. Cash has tried to leave the hunt
sabotaging in the past but an encounter with Rae that leads to Rae
turning up on his doorstep months later pulls Cash back into the life
that he tried to leave behind. Rae's fierceness shines through with each
time he's on the page. His idealism, devotion to the cause and passion
was hard to resist for me as a reader and for Cash, too. As for Cash, he
has the broody bad boy down pat but there's a lot of substance behind
the gorgeous, gruff exterior.
I was so
thrilled to see Lucky and Dom play such a big role in the book! I loved
seeing them again and Lucky and Cash's friendship is a thing of beauty. Cash
isn't quite like Garrett's other books, but you can certainly tell she
was the author. Brilliantly developed complex characters, steamy
romance, and it's VERY British! I'm so excited for the next book and
can't wait to read it. Be sure to check this one out, it's an action
packed, emotional ride!
