Synopsis

After the death of his wife, Tanner Rowe takes a step toward making her dying wish come true and buys the house with the dilapidated barn she’d been inexplicably drawn to in the picturesque Upper Peninsula. But after a year, he still can’t get past his grief long enough to make the repairs he’d promised.

Recently out of prison, Cole Lachlan has little to his name. Homeless, broke, and without many options as a felon, Cole heads to Red Bluff with hopes of a second chance. There he meets Tanner, whose loneliness mirrors his own, and soon Cole is trading room and board for rebuilding the burned-out barn on Tanner’s property that hasn’t been touched in seventy years.

Turns out, the barn holds more secrets than either of them could have imagined. After unearthing a hidden journal from 1948, Cole and Tanner spend their evenings poring over the pages, reading about a young man pining after his best friend. The deeper they delve into this forbidden affair from the past, the more Cole and Tanner’s own relationship shifts—from acquaintances to friends…to undeniable attraction.

But as they begin to deal with the newness of falling in love in the wake of Tanner’s loss and Cole’s past, they also become more determined to unravel the mystery of the young lovers who’ve captured their hearts, the rumors about the fire, and what really happened that fateful night.

Review

Ever feel like there is a hand guiding you towards something? After Tanner Rowe’s wife dies, he fulfills her dream of buying a house with a dilapidated barn that called to her for some reason. Now that Tanner is there, living in his dead wife’s dream house, he has no idea what to do. For now, he is doing as little as possible and he knows his wife wouldn’t want that for him or the barn.

Cole Lachlan doesn’t have much reason to believe in the good in people. Fresh out of prison, broke and homeless, things are becoming pretty dire for him. When Cole comes to the town of Red Bluff, he’s just looking for a second chance. When Tanner sees Cole, he does what no one else has done, he offers a helping hand. With both men living lonely, solitary lives, it becomes obvious  that they can help each other. Cole hires on to repair Tanner’s barn for the trade of room and board. What neither man knows is that the barn holds secrets, big secrets. When Cole discovers a journal from 1948, the two men begin spending their evenings reading it together. They read of a young man that is secretly in love with his best friend and the more they read of this forbidden love, the more their own relationship begins to change. Even as Cole and Tanner begin to fall in love, the need to know what happened to the young lovers from 1948 grows. With only the journal, some rumors and a little bit of fate, they’ll be able to solve this mystery.

This book gave me goosebumps so many times. There is this otherworldly beauty in the love of the four men involved, past and present. It’s a story of second chances, of helping out our fellow man and in believing in something and someone more than ourselves. This is truly a magical romance and I walked away from reading it with just a little more faith.
