Synopsis
Small town—big problems. Jericho Crewe is back in Mosely, Montana,
trying to deal with police corruption, interfering feds, his newly discovered
family members, and, of course, Wade Granger.
He doesn’t really need a biker war on top of it all, but as the bodies
start to pile up, it becomes pretty clear that’s what he’s got. Not only that,
but Wade’s involved somehow, and as soon as Wade is a part of something, things
that seemed clear become cloudy.
With the feds breathing down his neck, Jericho has to find his way
through Wade’s maze of half truths and manipulations. It would all be so much
easier if Jericho could think straight in the other man’s presence. So much
easier if their passionate past could be forgotten, and if he could be sure
he’s strong enough to resist the temptation of a passionate present.

Review
In book one of the Common Law series, Long Shadow, Jericho Crewe rushes
home to Mosely, Montana after receiving a call only to find that his criminal
father is already dead, the FBI is crawling over the case, and his now step
mother is just as bad as his father was and he now has siblings. But Wade
Granger, ex-boyfriend and love of Jericho’s life, that he had once begged to
leave when he left years before, is still there pulling at his heart even when
it’s a call he can’t answer because he may be hot but he’s still a criminal.
In book two, Embers, Jericho is now the under-sheriff to Kayla, his
childhood best friend, in his hometown
of Mosely, Montana. Trying to find the corruption in that small town may sound
easy, but with years of cases to go through and trouble brewing, in the name of
a biker war, things are about to get complicated. Nothing is as it seems and
finding what really is going on is going to take more than just Jericho playing
cowboy and getting himself into trouble. He also finds himself somehow being
used as a pawn in the DEA’s case, even with Wade warning him off. His
step-mother, Nikki, seems to be in the thick of trouble again, not that that
surprises me, but I do love her cocky attitude and demanding nature. Oh and his
siblings, yeah just as...cute as ever! Kayla has a bit of things going on in
this one too! Although, it sounds like a lot every storyline is perfectly clear
and well played out. We may not know all the answers now but she writes a story
that makes it hard not to want to come back for more.
The conflict in this story is real and present and so suspenseful it
will have you sitting on the edge of your seat trying to find all the players
of the game. Wade is charming, smart, and manipulative in all the best ways,
and of course sexy as hell. He uses Jericho in this story for nefarious
purposes but I can’t seem to not love him still. Kate wrote one bad boy that I
love and she gave him a cop that can’t seem to stay away from him. The sexual
tension between them is off the charts! The byplay was fun and hot and
everything this story needed. The tiptoeing the line is not easy for these two,
Wade is always finding ways to see him and Jericho can’t tell him no.
The slow burn in this story is perfect with some serious unresolved
sexual tension that burns up every page that Wade and Jericho share. Not much
on page sex, but that actually helps build whatever Kate is trying to get us to
in the series, and as much as I hate to say it I am loving that the tension
hasn’t really been broken, because I can only imagine what these two will be
like between the sheets! I’m not convinced that Wade can be written completely
off, and Jericho seems convinced that under that hardened criminal is the heart
of the boy who was is everything.
There are still so many unanswered questions with the overall storyline,
and those last couple of paragraphs had me screaming and laughing because I can
only imagine what Kate has in store for us in book 3, Darkness.
About Kate Sherwood
Kate Sherwood started writing about the same time she got back on a
horse after almost twenty years away from riding. She’d like to think she was
too young for it to be a midlife crisis, but apparently she was ready for some
changes!
Kate grew up near Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and went to school in
Montreal, then Vancouver. But for the last decade or so she’s been a country
girl. Sure, she misses some of the conveniences of the city, but living close
to nature makes up for those lacks. She’s living in Ontario’s “cottage
country”--other people save up their time and come to spend their vacations in
her neighborhood, but she gets to live there all year round!
Since her first book was published in 2010, she’s kept herself busy
with novels, novellas, and short stories in almost all the sub-genres of m/m
romance. Contemporary, suspense, scifi or fantasy--the settings are just the
backdrop for her characters to answer the important questions. How much can
they share, and what do they need to keep? Can they bring themselves to trust
someone, after being disappointed so many times? Are they brave enough to take
a chance on love?
Kate’s books balance drama with humor, angst with optimism. They
feature strong, damaged men who fight themselves harder than they fight anyone
else. And, wherever possible, there are animals: horses, dogs, cats ferrets,
squirrels… sometimes it’s easier to bond with a non-human, and most of Kate’s
men need all the help they can get.
After five years of writing, Kate is still learning, still stretching herself,
and still enjoying what she does. She’s looking forward to sharing a lot more
stories in the future.
