Synopsis

Devastatingly handsome pilot Frank Sheldon is doing his best to avoid his inheritance of money, charm, and good looks by rebuilding his life on his own terms after being discharged from the Air Force just before the repeal of DADT. When he unexpectedly meets the eccentric geek Benjamin Kaplan, sparks don’t quite fly, despite Benjamin’s obvious interest. Frank is not one to back down from a challenge, but what does any of that have to do with his sister’s campaign for governor, or the muckraking political website attacking her opponent, who just happens to be Frank’s unlamented, very closeted, ex-boyfriend? It’s hard to fall in love when all you are getting is mixed signals.

Review

It seems cliché and yet the idea of a rich boy having everything but the courage to face his life and make decisions rather than allowing others to plot his course becomes very real in Cooper West’s ’s newest release, Mixed Signals. Frank has always wanted to fly—it and the air force have been his passion since he was a young boy but when that is taken away after being discovered with another man in the era of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) he watches his dream float away. Now he flies a chopper for medical emergencies and lives a life that, while not the one he wanted, keeps him feeling useful and in the air. Then he meets a gruff, grumpy man at the hair salon and his world turns upside down. For the first time his model good looks don’t seem to have any effect on the man who has captured his interest. Little does he know that Dr. Benjamin Kaplan has a few secrets in his closet that will ultimately spell near disaster for Frank’s sister and her hopes for the governor’s seat she is campaigning for and has roped Frank into supporting.

I have to admit that the trope featuring the poor rich boy is usually one that rarely breaks any new ground for me and that rarely captures my interest completely. Having said that, I am now going to eat my words when it comes to Frank and his world that is so nicely created by author Cooper West. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that Benjamin didn’t fall for Frank immediately and held his own with his acerbic wit and curmudgeonly ways. Or maybe it was the healthy dislike I felt for the way in which both his sister and his father treated Frank like a pawn in their political and monetary endeavors while wrapping it up in the guise of love. Either way all I know is that Frank captured my interest and a little bit of my heart.

The sharp dialogue and repartee between Frank and Benjamin kept this novel from falling into just being a sappy romance and the way in which Benjamin retained his own intelligence and sense of self-preservation around the devastatingly rich and handsome Frank leant an air of believability to the novel that I really appreciated. But I think it was Frank’s refusal to feel sorry for himself while acknowledging that his wealth did indeed give him every physical thing he could want but not the most important thing that was missing from his life-someone to love and trust with is heart that hooked me in. Poor Frank had been emotionally burned and used terribly by a childhood first love and that painful encounter shaped much of his adult life. Escaping it often meant giving in to which ever person tried to control his life choices be it either his sister or his father. I really found myself hating how they manipulated him into things that ultimately were good for him but still meant he had to deal with doing things he’d rather not and confront past memories he’d rather see on his own terms—choices that he sometimes so desperately had been avoiding. Instead of that putting pressure on Frank, it gave him freedom and Benjamin became the one true constant in Frank’s life that didn’t want anything from him but rather just wanted to be with him. That made their love story all the richer and beautiful.

Cooper West’s Mixed Signals was a lovely romance that saw a tired old trope revitalized and an unusual pairing of two polar opposite men believably work out. I really enjoyed this novel and will check out the author’s other work in the future.

Series: Trailblazer #1

Synopsis

A mountain. A blizzard. A young man new to hiking and to love, making mistakes in both.
First year of college. A great time to re-invent yourself. Nathan Bartlett takes the opportunity very seriously—maybe a little too seriously. And he makes mistakes.

His mistakes? Falling for a straight guy who reminds him of his beloved older brother. Getting too invested in the substance abuse disorders of two other students. And climbing a mountain in a snowstorm for all the wrong reasons.

But he also develops friendships that will be his for life. He faces his inner demons and comes up with a plan. And he realizes that answers to important questions are seldom waiting on the surface but must be worked for, or struggled for, or suffered for—and sometimes all three.

Nathan is a trailblazer on his own journey. His success will be measured not by how well he follows someone else's path, but by whether he can forge his own. This first book in a series of three novels gets Nathan started on a journey that will teach him about himself, about life, and about love.

Walk with him.

Review

Where to begin with this incredible novel? If you are expecting a neatly tied up story with a happy ever after then you must reset your expectations and know that what you will experience is only the beginning of the journey for young Nathan Bartlett. I have a feeling that over the course of this trilogy we will grow up with Nathan for we assuredly have begun down that path with this first installment.

After losing his parents at a young age and then taken in by his maternal grandmother, it is his brother Neil who will become his confidant, his substitute father and his best friend. Even though the brothers would not share their love for hiking, Neil would be Nathan’s emotional anchor and his sense of security. Now in his first year at college, Nathan will be alone for the first time and mistakes will definitely be made from falling for a guy simply because he reminds him so much of the brother he is missing to a brush with drug addiction that will leave Nathan shaken and raw as someone he has deep feelings for will fall prey to its deadly grasp. Nathan will lust after a straight guy, come out to strangers for the first time and experience his first kiss and foray into sex. But through it all, something will be lacking—something that will drive Nathan to do foolish things and trust in those who will inevitably let him down. At the end of freshman year, it will be a changed man who stands on Mount Chocorua—one who has experienced incredible loss and one that is determined to make that loss count.

On Chocorua introduces us to a conflicted and, admittedly, naïve young man named Nathan. As we watch his first year at university unfold we begin to get a sense of just how much Nathan craves approval—not just by his older brother, Neil, but often by those he either is attracted to or in a relationship with over the course of his freshman year. It will be this addiction, of a sort, to being found worthy of being loved, that will cause our poor Nathan to do things he never would have deemed sensible had he been able to divorce his driving desire to be loved and wanted from his decision making. But it’s just these mistakes and moments of lapsed judgment that make this character so accessible and so real. He acts his age—and for a writer to achieve that with a character is more than half the battle when writing young adult material. But author Robin Reardon takes this expertise one step further and allows her guy to experience the deep pain of loss—not once, but twice and it will be the second time that is the more devastating one for poor Nathan. The experience he has from his first year away at school will begin to shape the man he wants to be in the future. It will give him a sense of focus that previously eluded him and an understanding of the desires that drove his emotions more fully. From the ashes will spring a great deal of hope and it will be that which will fuel Nathan’s ability to shoulder on despite incredible sadness.

Robin Reardon invites the reader on a trip that will lead her characters to embrace hard truths about themselves and those they love but also reveal a vast store of courage they never knew they had. There will be mistakes made and pain experienced along the way but there will also be an awakening and maturity that promises to be inspiring to those who finish the trek. I can’t wait to see what lay in store for Nathan next.

Blurb

A confused straight guy and a gay hookup artist walk into a bar ...

Firefighter Sean Connolly is straight -- until one impulsive night changes everything. He tries to dismiss it as a fluke, but when a fire rescue leads him back to the guy who blew his mind, he's thrown into a chaos of confusion and want. He gives in to curiosity, exploring a new side to himself -- not just his attraction to a man, but his desperate need to please.

Paramedic Jace Gillespie is a hookup pro, never letting anyone get too close. When he meets Sean, though, he feels a connection right away. An ill-advised threesome seems to kill a friendship in the making, but when they're thrown together by work, it doesn't take long for passion to reignite. Sean calls to something in Jace he never knew was there, and together, they explore a dynamic that fulfills them both.

But as feelings deepen, doubts surface. Sean is in the closet, and Jace struggles to trust his promise that it won't last forever. With family conflict and his career in the balance, Sean finds it difficult to picture his life without secrecy, but if he doesn't find a way, he may lose the one person he most wants to please.

Rapid Response is the longest novel of the Hearts and Health series at approximately 92,000 words! It can be read as a standalone.

Excerpt

Sean glanced into the mirror, and though he looked like the same guy on the outside — dark hair, dark eyes, unremarkable face — he didn’t recognize the one on the inside. And that was scary.

“I’m sorry,” he scraped out.

“For what? Staring at my mouth, or for hiding from yourself?” Jace asked caustically.

Sean swallowed hard. His traitorous eyes found Jace in the mirror, locking on the mouth in question. Pink, full lips. Jace had been a good kisser. A good … sucker.

“Yeah, just like that,” Jace said.

Sean jerked his gaze to Jace’s eyes, which bored into him, their power not diluted in the slightest by the mirror acting as their go-between. Could Jace see what was inside? If he could...

“Sorry,” Sean whispered. “I didn’t realize I...”

“What, Sean? What didn’t you realize?”

“That I, um. That I...” He couldn’t get the words out.

“That you like my mouth? That you want it on you again? That you—”

Sean spun around. “Shut up.”

“Make me.”

His breath caught. “What?”

“You heard me,” Jace said. “Make me shut up. You know exactly how to do it.”

Sean hesitated, and Jace smirked. “Yeah, I didn’t think so.”

Frustrated and frazzled, Sean acted on instinct, doing exactly what Jace had asked. He grabbed the front of Jace’s shirt, spun him around, and shoved him against the counter containing the row of sinks.

Then he kissed him.

Hard.

To make him shut up.

It was the only way to get him to stop talking. Gloating. Jace had practically ordered him to do it, the bastard. And Sean needed to shut up the doubts in his head, too.

He closed his eyes, blocking out all thought, and sank into the feeling of Jace’s perfect, hot mouth on his again.

Author Bio

DJ Jamison is the author of more than a dozen m/m romances, including the Ashe Sentinel series and the Hearts and Health series. She writes a variety of queer characters, from gay to bisexual to asexual, with a focus on telling love stories that are more about common ground than lust at first sight. DJ grew up in the Midwest in a working-class family, and those influences can be found in her writing through characters coping with real-life problems: money troubles, workplace drama, family conflicts and, of course, falling in love. DJ spent more than a decade in the newspaper industry before chasing her first dream to write fiction. She spent a lifetime reading before that, and continues to avidly devour her fellow authors' books each night. She lives in Kansas with her husband, two sons, two fish and, regrettably, one snake.

Review

This was an amazing story. I was somewhat floored by it. At every turning point I was stunned by the unpredictable twist, it was exquisitely done, I just couldn’t believe my eyes.
Jack is a mechanic with his own garage, also working as a martial art teacher at a dojo.
When a gorgeous guy with soft brown eyes brings in a broken car, Jack is more than interested.

Jan is a financial consultant with a broken car and is intrigued by Jack’s personality and even more when he feels Jack’s caged cock.

They start something together and both are more than smitten with each other. Until...
Until it all becomes complicated. This is not an ordinary story, it has so many layers and is so widely spread out, it’s just not simple to describe it without giving too much story away.
One thing I can say: don’t tell Jack ‘don’t’
This journey is all about three men, a thrilling psychological war, many traps, Doms and subs, a safety net, and love. We get to know all these factors throughout the story. Every chapter was one where my mouth was hanging open from all the amazing and intriguing events.
I loved Jan instantly, and Jack, gosh, he was something.  I never met a more complicated personality than Jack I loved him hard and together they felt so right.

Jan made Jack forget his shit, until it became too complicated. And then there was Gray!!
Whoa, what can I say about Gray? He has such a strong personality, he brings you to your knees. He just demands it with his whole being, I had a deep respect for him.
Jack oh Jack, the most stubborn man I’ve ever met. I would have thrown the towel in the ring more than once. But Jack nooo, even deeply hurt he stayed dedicated. I loved him for that.
This was one of the most intriguing stories I have ever read, so explosive!! Watching the wick slowly burn before reaching the bomb and BAM.

It was a dark, unpredictable, thrilling, warm, funny, hurtful, emotional, enlightening, honest, witty, thorough, and endearing story.
Gray, Jack and Jan were amazingly put down. Their dynamic was so powerful, my heart skipped more than once watching them.
A story with  unbelievably strong content and masterfully written in the most captivating way as possible, the whole scenery was breathtaking.

Silly me I was reading at work at lunch, tears running down my face,  how could I explain this.
So, don’t... read at work, hell,  don’t... read with anyone around, sit by yourself and go with this tremendous ride!
Highly recommended
