Review

You have to love a good mystery and Keelan Ellis's Good Boys is pretty great. I never know with mysteries if I'll figure it out too soon and if I do will I get bored. I had a lot of ideas as I was reading and some were right and some weren't so it kept me on my toes.

Paul is a character that I sort of felt terribly bad for from the start. He's been living with his ex for a while. Their 8 year relationship fizzled out a long time ago. I mean Paul was sleeping in the guest room for a good long while and they were "sex" buddies. Now Andy, the ex, wants Paul out and so he's moving out. 

His partner, Tim, takes pity on him and lets him bunk with him. I really adored Tim. He's a sweetheart and a true friend. One that we all should have at least one of. He's also great for Paul. But he's straight and pining for their Captain. 

When two teen boys are murdered and Paul and Tim are sent to the case this is where the mystery begins. It was really sad. Two boys, gay, friends, great kids... dead. What happened? What went wrong? It began to build and build and weave itself nicely.

In between this we are following Paul and his personal dilemmas. From "This isn't happening David," to "No okay yes, Owen." 

The mystery is constructed well. Good clues, perfect suspense. It's not a saturated love story. This is ultimately a mystery and really that's what the focus stays on. You will get sucked in.

Very engaging and entertaining.

Jackson mulled over the decision the entire night. Why did he accept? It wasn’t his business what happened between Paul and Michael. Hell, he’d only met the man once, and that was in passing. Granted, Paul was a friend, or had been once, but was that grounds enough to get in the middle of this?

And playing without a safe word—he hadn’t done it before. He avoided it like plague, especially since it was a fantasy of his own. One he considered too dangerous for everyone involved and kept to himself. So what if his heart had jumped when he heard the offer? If it had been anyone but Paul, Jackson would have most likely refused to take part, no matter how tempting it had sounded. An entire night with a trained, obedient sub. His to torture, to pleasure. His to fuck if he so wanted.

And the power—so much of it. To have someone at his feet, completely at his mercy, was something he had fantasized about for a long time. He had both dreamed and dreaded it. How would he handle it?

He should have said no.

EXCERPT

THE NEXT DAY I woke in the late morning, unusually early for me, because of the restless sleep. I picked up the card Sicong left me and wondered if I should go. It sounded exciting to learn about my abilities, but I didn’t like the mission aspect of it.

It was a good day. The sky was cloudless and the sun was shining. I decided to go for a walk to help with my confusion. With the light breeze, I walked randomly around the neighborhood. It didn’t help with clearing my head, though, because all the faces of the guys I saw somehow changed into Sicong’s. I couldn’t deny Sicong was a bit fascinating. Okay, a lot fascinating, because he was hot and dangerous. Also, I remembered him telling me that if I squinted at him, he’d be light gray. That was new, because I seldom saw anyone who turned gray, or any shades of black for that matter. I meandered some more before I found myself in a part of town I rarely frequented. I looked about, trying to figure out where I was, when I focused on a rather plain building. It was ordinary, but I felt it was somehow familiar. I read the address and found it vaguely recognizable. “Twenty-Three Indigo Avenue.”

Then I saw him. Still clad in leather pants and sporting the spiky hair, it was the guy I’d been seeing in every guy’s face. Sicong. He walked toward me.

“You found us, I see.” He held out his hand.

REVIEW

I can hear the song A Whole New World playing in my head as I write this review. Because that’s exactly what this short story is about. A post-apocalyptic tale. A world recreated and new beings amongst us. The beings that mingle within the human race are called Squinters. 

Squinters are fascinating! I really got a kick out of them. They are empaths meaning they can read people’s emotions. But they can also persuade people too. That’s dangerous but really cool! Now, the title of this book is called Lime & Tangerine and I didn’t know why until I read it. They see in colors. Colors mean things. Lime means love and tangerine means lust. This is important of course!

When Senlin is recruited by Sicong for being a squinter things amp up a lot. There is unrequited love, excitement, energy, suspense… and inevitably love.

I enjoyed this world the author created. I was desperate for more and that is always the down side, for me, with short stories. I want more and I want more time with the characters.

A lot of creativity went into the construction of this world!
