Synopsis

A hockey star skating on the edge of a catastrophe.

A PR specialist so adept, he’s called “the Fixer.”

Working together will be the biggest challenge of both their careers.

The LA Vikings hockey team is fed up the violent outbursts of its huge, intimidating enforcer, Viktor Novak. Hounded by a homophobic and domineering father, Viktor takes out his frustrations by spilling blood—on and off the ice. Now he has one last chance to clean up his image, or his career is over.

That’s where Bowen Miller comes in.

Bo has taken on the hardest cases and succeeded—by micromanaging every aspect of a client’s life—at the expense of his own happiness. But in the stubborn, hot mess that is Viktor, Bo might have met his match—both in and out of the bedroom. One man is out of control, and one controls everything. But when sex and attraction come into play, those roles are open to negotiation.

Review

Hockey books are my jam, my absolute favorite, and I'm not even kidding. I'm like a kid in a candy store when it comes to finding a hockey book to read. So needless to say, I was super stoked to read Two Man Advantage by Leigh Carman. I was a tad worried because it's the third book in the series, AND this is a new to me author--two things that always give me pause. I was able to follow along with the characters and story just fine, though so no worries there. However, I would have liked more actual hockey in a book set around a hockey star who needs to repair his image and the man in charge of getting that done.

Two Man Advantage is about Viktor Novak, a hockey star with an image problem. And it's not a little one that can easily fixed with a visit to a children's hospital to pose for pictures or being seen at a charity event. Viktor is mean and vicious and is extremely unlikable. The fans don't like him, most of his team doesn't either, and the fact that he comes from a family of hockey stars isn't enough to appease the owners and coach of his team, the LA Vikings. Viktor is given an ultimatum, clean up his act or get lost. He's on his very last chance and he knows it. The team has brought in none other than Bowen Miller, fixer extraordinaire to handle the problem.

To say these two get off on the wrong foot is like saying ice cream isn't delicious. They butt heads immediately and it sure doesn't help that Viktor is wildly attracted to Bo and vice versa. I have to say, I wasn't a huge fan of either of these guys. Viktor is just incredibly brash and rude and Bo is stubborn and provoking. Sure it makes for some relatively hot sex scenes ... but that's about it. There was A LOT of over the top melodrama surrounding Viktor. And lots of rather unnecessary violence as well. Viktor's father was so evil he was a caricature. To be honest, the antagonism between the two men for most of the book, even after they were supposedly madly in love with one another, was pretty off-putting, but that could very well be just my personal preferences. Give this one a chance and see if you feel differently, you just might surprise yourself.

Synopsis

Two stubborn men.

One is a rude jerk. The other, the life of the party.

It was hate at first sight.

Pro beach volleyball players Finn Callahan and Dexter Savage have been rivals since college. While Finn always comes out on top on the court, Dexter’s carefree and fun-loving personality earns him scores of adoring men and women. And as much as Finn fights to deny it, there’s another reason for the tension he feels when Dex is around. Hate wasn’t the only thing he felt when he first laid eyes on his opponent.

When they’re forced to team up, the two men must bury their differences—on and off the court—if either of them is going to succeed professionally.

Hot volleyball players? Check!
Little bit of angst? Check!
Unresolved sexual tension? Double check!
Enemies to Lovers? Oh yeah!

Dex Savage is the guy everyone likes on the court and off. He has charm and personality. He has good looks and smarts. What he doesn’t have is love. No family, no friends, and no one to call his own because he goes through girlfriends like I go through books! Dex has never felt connected to any of them and volleyball has ALWAYS been number one to him. For Dex there’s nothing more important than the sponsors because to him losing one means losing everything.

Finn Callahan had it all. He had the volleyball team to beat, the love of his partner on and off the field, and he was able to make Dex miserable with just a couple of words. Yeah he was a rude jerk but Tristan always was the one with the personality and all that mattered to Finn was Tristan. Until it all came crashing down and he had no one to lean on because no one knew the real him except Tristan.

Through of series of bad events Dex and Finn are now teammates but that comes with a whole host of new issues. They have an equal amount of hostility and sexual tension between them and in order to make this team work and win they need to work through these problems. Once they recognize the problem of course. Because isn’t that the first part of solving an issue is not denying it anymore?

These two fight a lot and are both so hot headed they walk away from the arguments so much, especially Dex who has serious case of fight or flight. But Dex has a hard time facing real issues about himself, he seems to never look inward often but this thing with Finn is forcing him to admit to something he has long since denied, even to himself. What he finds is attraction so hot it’s just waiting for the match to ignite it.

As the story progresses these two have some serious emotional situations to deal with ones that include trust and love, self-awareness and security, hope and family, and living life in the public eye while being an out gay athlete. It is told in a dual POV which worked well for me since Dex and Finn each had different things to work through internally. Their problems did not start just when the story starts and it was really great to get to know the past events in their lives that motivated them now.

This is the first book by this author and I will definitely be giving her other books a try!
