Sure, the employees are well dressed and polite. Sure, the food and entertainment is old time fare. But it’s all a schtick, right?

Review

The last thing George and Jason wanted to hear was that the cancer hadn’t gone away—all the months of chemo had done little to shrink the deadly tumor growing in George’s brain. Jason is devastated but George is resolved. He refuses to spend what little time he has left wallowing and waiting for death. He convinces Jason to go on a trip with him—just get in the car and go. Their final destination will have to be to George’s parents—the same one he is estranged from but Jason insists they must tell them. A they head to Vermont a freak rainstorm, a sudden falling branch and a punctured tire and bent rim later lands them in a quiet, unobtrusive hotel named Borderland.

At first, Jason and George are charmed by the proprietress, Rebecca, her small staff and their rather backwards way. It seems just a little strange that they are wearing what can only be costumes from the early 1920’s but then that is just the hotel’s thing—or so the men think. But the lack of internet, phone, television and other guests seems just a bit odd. Then others appear—as if out of nowhere. Other guests—this time in costumes from the 1940’s and they are different—strange—scary. But what really jangles both Jason and George is the fact that George seems to be getting better, one might say he looks robust even, but Jason suddenly becomes quite ill—with the flu. Not the modern day flu but the great influenza strain from 1920…the one that killed millions. Or is it just the flu? What exactly does the mysterious Margie, the USO entertainer have to do with everyone not quite remembering the past and Jason suddenly becoming deathly ill? There’s something evil lurking at the Borderland and George must discover how to defeat it before it takes the life of the man he loves.

When I heard two of my favorite authors, Jamie Fessenden and F.E. Feeley Jr. were collaborating and releasing a mystery/ghost story/romance I was intrigued. I had to read it and I am so glad I did. These two men are standout authors in their own right but as a team they are amazing. This is a novel I read with the lights on and my heart in my throat. It was a beautiful romance, an awesome ghost story and a twisty mystery all rolled into one.

From the onset we know George has an inoperable brain tumor but what he does with the months he is left with is what this story is really all about—that and how love endures through time and comes full circle. The opening pages where the two husbands find out the outcome of the torturous treatment George has undergone is just incredibly sad but these authors don’t let us dwell there long. Instead they thrust us into the heart of a story that is the stuff of nightmares and allow us a birds eye view of two men determined to survive it with their love for each other intact.

What follows is a twisting macabre story of a hotel caught in time where people check in but rarely check out. The spirits that live there are both malevolent and benign but what is most scary is those that George and Jason can see—that are completely corporeal but are unaware of the fact that they are trapped in time. They have been cast under a spell of sorts and as George helps them untangle it all and see what has happened the action throttles up to full speed and the story becomes one scary encounter after another. But there is always hope—ever present and spurring George and Jason on through it all.

This dynamic writing duo gives us a thrilling novel in Borderland. I completely enjoyed every moment of the story and was absolutely all in when it came to the supernatural elements. I highly recommend this book to any who enjoy a good horror story infused with deep romantic love and a hopeful future.

Random Review: Into The Gray by F.E. Feeley Jr #Review #Giveaway

Title: Into The Gray
Author: F.E. Feeley Jr
Self- Published
Publication Date: March 27, 2019
Length: 136 pages

Synopsis

Life after college is not what Aaron expected. Isn’t he supposed to have what he wants to do figured out by now? David never expected his marriage to be rocky, let alone about to end. How is he supposed to move on from this? December in Detroit is normally unforgiving, but an unexpected blizzard puts David and Aaron on a course toward each other. Despite the frozen ground and battleship gray sky, these men find heat together. It’s intimate and illicit, stretching what was supposed to be a one night stand into something more. Sometimes the touch of a stranger, however forbidden, is just what we need when we enter the gray.

Review

While the author, F.E. Feeley Jr. says this is his first foray into the world of erotica, I would caution readers who may not always be a fan of that genre to be careful not to dismiss this as just a sexy time kind of novel. For me, Into the Gray was so much more—it is a beautiful story highlighting the hurt/comfort trope with a solid promise of a second chance at a love that brings happiness and comfort rather than pain and disillusionment. Aaron and David are two wounded men—both escaping a love that was hurtful and filled with lies. In David’s case it was his own inability to be truthful to himself about who he really was and the years of a wasted marriage trying to be something different. His lie would harm both himself and the girl he did indeed care for and nearly destroy the friendship they once had. For Aaron the need to distance himself from a man he loved in order to keep his own sanity intact meant turning his back on his lover when the man hit rock bottom. Both Aaron and David are at a crossroads in their lives, unhappy, unsettled and not really sure what to do about it. Then they find each other and what begins as a one night stand turns into so much more.

This is not the first novel I have read by this author and each time I experience one of his stories I am struck afresh by the authenticity of his voice, the depth of his characters and the honesty of their journey. There is no wasted time spent on detailing empty sexual encounters or tired old conflicts that are meant to induce angst; instead there is a tightly woven story that reveals where his men have been and where they long to be. Feeley’s descriptive prose and intelligent dialogue is reminiscent of beautiful poetry as he paints pictures with his carefully placed words that draw one into the fabric of the story. This was a lovely romance with just enough heat to make it erotic but not erotica. The distinction here is the author choosing to put the story of Aaron and David first and their sexual encounters second and it works beautifully.

If I had any complaints about this novel it was that it was just too short. I want more of Aaron and David’s story. I want to understand how their past experiences brought them to such a painful present. I want to see more of their life together and travel with them as they become a couple. These two men are just on the cusp of a future together and I would love to see some of that played out in a second novel. Suffice it to say that for now I can only recommend this story to any who enjoy reading about hurting souls who step out of the darkness and find the light in another’s arms.

Excerpt:

“He was scared.
“Grandma, what’s wrong?”
“Thunderstorm, baby. Hang on,” she said to him, and then to his mother, whom he just spotted to their left, “Where’s the car?”
“At the front of the lot. We were one of the first ones here this morning,” Ann said as she worked to keep up in her flip-flops.
On the water, he saw his yellow bucket floating bottom down. It was spinning hypnotically, but it was when Anderson looked skyward he found himself becoming terrified. Above the lake, the sky had turned a sickly green. The clouds directly above it and moving in closer were swirling in a tight formation with what looked like a big black eye staring down at them.
“Grandma! What’s that?” Anderson exclaimed pointing skyward. She stopped and turned to look.”

“Oh, my God,” she breathed, mostly to herself. Anderson felt panic begin to set it.
Someone shouted close to them, “Jesus Christ! It’s a tornado!”

Interview

Interview Prompts by Lily G Blunt

The event that altered the course of your life…

Receiving my first contract for Timber Manor and then one for Objects in the Rearview Mirror.

The prized possession you value above all others…

My life at one point consisted of garbage bags. That’s how I moved around. I had one suit case and a lot of trash bags. In those black, hefty, pauper’s luggage I carried my world around in the back of a four banger, I purchased before I left the Army.
Yet, I had one other thing. One big thing that I had no idea what I would do with. And that was this long cardboard tube, at least four feet tall, that I toted around with me.
In that tube was a rolled up four-foot long piece of art someone purchased for me while we were in the middle east together. It’s this cheap, mass produced, yet stunning portrait of an Egyptian scene that I absolutely adore, mostly for sentimental reasons.
Now that I no longer live like a Bedouin Tribesman, am happily married, and getting fatter by the day (because that’s what happiness does)…It’s now hanging on my wall.

The poem that touches your soul…

The Mask by Paul Laurence Dunbar
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
Conscientious Objector by Edna St. Vincent Millay
Sonnet 116 and Sonnet 29 by William Shakespeare – stunningly beautiful
The day is done by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow – this one makes me cry.

The song that means the most to you…

I will give you a playlist of the songs that mean the most to me:

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen
Again, Today by Brandi Carlile
Lightning Flashes by Live
Proud Mary by Tina Turner
Who Knew by P!nk
Bed of Roses by Bon Jovi
How Great Thou Art in a four-part harmony if you want to see me cry.
Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn
Right to be Wrong by Joss Stone
All of Motown – well, most of it, anyway.
Objects in the Rear View Mirror by Meatloaf
Sweet Child o’ Mine Guns and Roses
TLC’s entire discography especially Fanmail
The Phantom of the Opera Soundtrack
Who Wants to Live Forever - Queen
Habanera from Carmen
Actually, this list keeps going into perpetuity...

The pet hate that makes your hackles rise…

Piracy. Don’t be a dick. It isn’t yours. You don’t have a right to it. Exposure as a medical term kills people and spreading around people’s work kills their career.
I often wish I could pull someone with me through the creative process so they can see what all goes into writing a book. The amount of money spent on promotion, all of that. They’d quit pirating.

The piece of wisdom you would pass onto a child…

You are enough. You are more than enough. You won’t understand that now – but keep it in the back of your head.

The character you enjoyed writing the most…

I like writing the ghost scenes from three of my previous works. It was fun to get into the head of those kinds of beings. Whether it was ‘IT’ from Timber Manor, The young man from Objects, or The ghost from Still Waters. In my current novel, When Heaven Strikes, the character I most enjoyed was Ted.

The book you enjoyed planning/writing the most…

The book I most enjoyed writing was my very first novel, The Haunting of Timber Manor. I remember being excited as the story began to come together. I wrote some of it on the computer, but the most of it was written free hand, in a notebook, and later transcribed onto a word document.
I remember reading scenes to my husband, I remember sitting for hours scratching out word after word, scribbling it out, rewriting it to make better sense in my head, and then moving it over to the computer.
It was also the very first book published and the feeling of seeing a ‘congratulations’ letter in your inbox along with an advance check and contract – nothing like it.

Thank you for answering these interview prompts.
