Synopsis

Can two men with skewed self-images see their true reflections in each other’s eyes?

Jerry Wallender—firefighter, surfer, and occasional nude model—knows he’s no rocket scientist. So why does he keep choosing intellectual guys who make him feel dumber? He worked his buns off to overcome his reading disability and pass the firefighter’s test, and he loves everything about the job. Well, except for Mick Cassidy, the big, blond, hunky homophobe who harasses Jerry for being gay. But Jerry is smart enough to realize it’s not hate driving Mick, but the pain of a very unhappy upbringing.

Mick Cassidy, Firefighter Assist and Search Team, fights fires, but he can’t fight his attraction to the kindest, most generous—and sexiest—guy he’s ever met. Does that make him gay? If it does, he just might get himself killed by his gay-hating preacher father—and take Jerry down with him.

Review

Jerry is an out and proud firefighter, working for a firehouse in Laguna Beach.  Mack works with him, but, because of his upbringing (more on that a little later on), he acts like a bigoted jerk most of the time, even going so far as to get into a fist fight with one of Jerry’s friends that resulted in physical injury to Mack.

Of the two characters, I actually found Mack to be more interesting.  His public persona is that of a bigoted jerk, spouting of hate-filled rhetoric as often as possible.  His internal monologue tells a different story.  He finds Jerry physically attractive and begins to question why.  These questions are in direct conflict with everything he has been taught by his father, a “preacher” of what seems more like a cult than a church.  He's inexperienced with women as well as men as a direct result of his upbringing.   His father has definite ideas about what Mack should be doing with his life, going to far as to choose his potential future bride.

Jerry and Mack end up being forced to work together on a special project for children, and the ice between them begins to thaw.   Without giving away any spoilers,  the book builds from there.

Watching Jerry and Mack develop a relationship was fun.  Mack is clearly out of his depth when it comes to everything from dating to sex.  He has a very child-like perspective of both,  which isn’t surprising when you consider he was raised by a religious zealot.

The writing is simple and straight forward.  I think, however, I could have done without the single word monologues mid-paragraph, which make the characters come off as somewhat child-like.  Those had a tendency to pull me out of the scene.

Synopsis

A double dose of alpha male might be better than one.

Despite just getting out of an abusive relationship with an asshole alpha, David Underwood’s wandering glance lands on two hot members of the Australian volleyball team on Laguna Beach and gets him harassed again. Still, when the delicious Gareth Marshall proves his interest by coming out to his team, David succumbs to his attraction. But Gareth’s volleyball partner, Edge, who’s equally hot, makes the lovers’ lives miserable.

For Gareth, a lifetime of hiding his orientation—and his attraction—from his best friend, Edge, as well as everyone else around him, adds up to hurt and frustration. David’s the first man to ever compete with Edge for Gareth’s passion. But Edge has secrets of his own, and David’s ex-lover will never be happy without David under his fist. With everything stacked against him, can a gay Laguna man find happiness with an alpha male–or two?

A "pumped up" version of the Volley Balls story, twice as long as the original.

Review

This is book one of Tara Lain’s Balls to the Wall Series. It is a re-release but I never read the original so I’m not sure what, if any, changes were made.

In this story we have a guy, David. He owns a gallery, he’s out of an abusive relationship with Phil. David actually an amazing character. I enjoyed him a great deal. He may have been in an abusive relationship but he’s strong and has built a terrific life for himself. He’s surrounded himself with outstanding friends.

The book opens with David eating a sandwich on the beach and being verbally assaulted by one of these volley ball players. It’s harsh and of course David has residual fears from his past relationship.
The two volleyball players are Gareth and Edge. Edge is a homophobic guy. Gareth is in the closet. How they are best friends you will find yourself wondering often.

A lot happens in this story a twosome turns into a threesome. There’s very minor drama, little angst. Now, you need to understand; ménage is pretty much one of, if not my most, favorite trope. I read it with a skeptical eye. I get excited about the book and hope for the best.

Here’s the thing about Volley Balls; the chemistry wasn’t there. It was far too rushed and I didn’t believe it at all. One of the most amazing things about ménages is the psychology and I’m sorry to say all it felt like was a prolonged orgy to me.  There was so much missing in that aspect and because of that this just wasn’t a book for me.

I am a huge Tara Lain fan so I was sad that this book didn’t work for me. I’m interested in the next book and will read it because the only issue I had with this was the believability in these three guys making it work. Other than that it was quite entertaining.
