Shay Maloney is living his dream—on tour with his pirate/folk-rock band. But you can’t know where you’re going until you know where you’re from, and that’s where moody filmmaker and researcher Ollie Pietruska comes in.

The band’s management persuades Shay to let a television company film a documentary about his roots beyond his adoptive Irish family, and Ollie comes into his life knowing more about Shay than Shay’s ever known about himself.

But while Ollie holds the key to Shay’s past, he’s also hiding deep scars. Even as the hardships of the tour bring them closer, Ollie’s demons threaten the blossoming romance. They might both reach the breaking point before Ollie realises he’s been standing on the edge of the world for too long, and it’s Shay who holds the key to his future.

A friends-to-lovers, rock star, road-tripping romance, with a guaranteed happily-ever-after.

REVIEW

Shay Maloney loves his band—loves to create the music they play and realizes that though they are a niche type of ensemble as a pirate/folk group, the tour they are currently on is a huge deal. If only Shay didn’t sometimes feel like a fraud for claiming his Irish heritage when he knows full well that he is adopted and really doesn’t know what or who he really is at all. When he’s introduced to the man from Sky productions who is there to film a documentary all about Shay’s heritage, Shay isn’t really fussed about the fact that the guy will be slowly revealing his past in a series of set-up interviews—leaving Shay in the dark as to who his parents really are till the end of the tour. No, what Shay is bothered about is the fact that he is drawn to the mysterious stranger, Ollie Pietruska, and while Ollie knows everything about him, in return, Shay knows nothing about him except that he wants to be with him very badly.

Ollie is tired, scared and, frankly regretting his decision to join the tour in order to film Shay Maloney. It means living on their tour bus and that stirs up all kinds of memories and emotions that Oliie doesn’t want or need. But a job is a job and after the past year Ollie has had forcing himself back into the profession he loves, he should be grateful the company is willing to take a chance on him delivering the story they want. This should be a simple thing—do the deed, lead up to the big reveal and catch it all on video. The thing is Ollie didn’t expect to feel something more than simple curiosity for Shay—he didn’t expect to want to let the man in on the secret that derailed Ollie’s life and continues to influence it still today.

Garrett Leigh has released a new novel, The Edge of the World, and it is a remarkable story of what happens when we are finally forced to deal with past trauma in order to allow ourselves to be in love once more. Shay has never loved anyone so deeply that he aches to know them—aches to support and nurture them—aches to heal them. Ollie is a shadow of who he once was—no longer a confident, rising star in the film industry, one who was once a genius behind the camera, but now someone who must literally grit their teeth and talk themselves through each day and getting the job done. A past horrific incident has not only injured Ollie physically but mentally and he fights to tamp down his residual fears every day. Shay is a soothing balm to Ollie—he can’t explain why but Ollie knows that when he’s with the talented musician life is better, fear is held at bay, and for the first time he wants someone to know what he is hiding.

These two dance around their attraction for each other as the story evolves and little by little we discover who Shay really is and all about his ancestors. Alongside this story line, we meet the other band members and honestly if this author wanted to I think they could make a series about this group and it would be just as marvelous as this novel. This was such a character-rich book. By the end I really felt I knew Ollie and Shay and I loved them so much. I was so glad that Ollie made the decisions he made even if they were hard on both Shay and himself. I will admit I was a bit shocked at the big surprise about Shay’s real parents and taken aback at how he managed to deal with it so easily. But still, the lead up to that moment was so rich and beautifully written that I can barely find fault with that small element.

The Edge of the World is a gorgeous hurt/comfort story that delivers a sweet and healing romance. I was swept up in the lives of two men who deserved all the happiness they finally achieve together. I highly recommend this novel to you.
