A mystery that's not really a mystery at all, Wight Mischief by
J.L. Merrow was a bit of a miss for me. This is a re-release and never
having read the first edition, I can't say if anything has been changed
or if it has, whether that's a good or bad thing. I had a hard time
connecting to the characters (neither were particularly likable) and as I
prefaced, the mystery of the book wasn't much of one, and definitely
not enough to keep my invested in the book.
There's
no question that J.L. Merrow is a talented writer. My issues with the
book have to do with the plot and the characters, not the writing
itself. I really did enjoy the setting--the Isle of Wight--and the
ambiance it lends to the story. I found Will particularly sweet, even if
a bit clueless, which I tend to like most times, but here not so much.
There are moments though when Will's genuine nice nature comes to the
forefront and you can't help but root for the guy. Baz was a jerk and I
wish the book wouldn't have focused so much on he and Will since it's
Marcus who is Will's love interest. And Marcus ... well, he was
certainly a difficult character to understand. He was hard from me to
connect to so in turn, I wasn't all that invested in his story. His
character definitely could have used a bit more fleshing out because
there are aspects I was interested in finding out more about.
All
in all, this one missed the mark for me but I know there are readers
who would enjoy Wight Mischief so I hope you'll give it a try and hope
that you enjoy it! I know for myself I'm left with a great urge to visit
the Isle of Wight sometime. I bet it's something else!
