Synopsis
Nate~
With the world in chaos around us, the only thing I could do was try to keep Felix safe as we searched for our older brother. We’d been traveling for over two years, searching Ministry camp after Ministry camp and trying to steer clear of the Rebels. I didn’t know what to do when we ran into a whole group of shifters with guns. But then, the huge, gorgeous guy that found us did the unthinkable…
Tre~
At first I thought the two young shifters were trying to sneak up on me, but I soon realized they were only passing through. I was going to send them on their way until I heard the others coming. What was I supposed to do? How else was I supposed to save them? The delicious man and his brother would’ve been killed had I not claimed him.
Will Nate and Tre be able to work together to keep themselves and their packmates alive? Or will they let the cruelty of the outside world tear them apart?
Review
Michele Notaro is a new to me author that hit nearly every button I have when it comes to shifter romance.
What I loved most was the dystopian alternate universe where the world of humans and shifter collide, and everyone takes sides. The war was brutal, many died on both sides, and it’s still ongoing. We jump in after all that has happened and Nate and his little brother are on the “run” looking for their older brother, Ronan. The boys have been through a lot of loss and hardship, and my heart broke for Felix and Nate.
Seemingly alone in a dangerous world until they stumble (or rather are coerced by Felix) into a town, they find Tre and things take a sudden change for the brothers.
Tre is a 400-year-old Alpha shifter whose only pack mate is his equally as old best friend Patrick (aka Patty). The two had this quirky brotherly relationship that made me sigh with happiness and giggle with glee when they teased each other. Tre knows he needs to protect Nate and Felix from what the shifters from his new camp would do to them if they found them. What comes next is the author's own tale of what pack is, what True Mates are, and the warring factions.
The author was good at giving into the info dump instead she teased out piece by piece of the history we were all craving as we read. Who were the Rebels? Are they the good guys or are the Ministry? There’s violence and gunfights, a hostage situation and torture, a twist that shocked not just Nate but me as well. And much more. There were parts that the author “told” the story instead of “show” it but other than one they didn’t feel off. There was a lot of story to get to, and if she told every single part, it would’ve never ended.
The romance was not without its struggles, even with the True Mates thrown in. Nate was young at 18 but jaded in the only way someone who has gone through what he has. Tre was guarded and protective of his pack but had this softcore that he had to let show. Ultimately these two need to learn trust and love because without it; they won’t survive. I loved Patty and his quirky tell-it-like-it-is personality, and I cannot wait to see his True Mate story because dang the tease was good!! Nate and his love for Felix was big, and I loved every minute of that. Ronan, big brother to Nate and Felix, I leave my judgment until I know more. Book two will still have a lot of story left to give for us to get closer to seeing the whole picture but I’m invested, and I need to know!
Can’t wait for book 2!
