Historical romance is not stuffy— “At the gentle pressure of my finger, his mouth opened, jaw dropping. I envisioned pushing Richard onto his knees…” from The Tutor

My name is Bonnie Dee and I love gay historical romance. If you only read contemporaries or paranormals, I’m here to convince you historical is not stuffy, stilted or boring. If you haven’t given it a try yet, you might want to check out my new release, The Tutor.
Blurb

Gothic romance with a twist.

Elements of The Sound of Music, The Enchanted Garden, Jane Eyre, and “true” ghost hunting shows make this story feel familiar. Gay love makes it unique.

Seeing an ad for a position at a Yorkshire estate, typesetter Graham Cowrie decides to make an upward career move by passing himself off as a tutor. How hard can it be to teach a few subjects to a pair of nine-year-old boys? But on his arrival at the ancient house, he finds the staff creepy, the twins odd, and the widowed master temporarily absent.

His first meeting with brooding, stern, but oh-so-attractive, Sir Richard doesn’t go well, but with no other prospects vying for the teaching position, Graham manages to keep it. His mission soon becomes clear, break down the walls of reserve both father and sons have erected and attempt to bridge the gap between them.

But strange sounds, sights and experiences keep Graham on edge until he finally admits the Hall is haunted by two entities with very different agendas. Graham works to appease one and combat the other while protecting the broken family he’s grown to care for.

 Review

I’m not one for historical books but this one caught my eye! It’s a gothic love story. One built on great mystery, forbidden love, and the supernatural. What’s not to love? It was an absolutely thrilling ride. Following the story on Graham’s POV, we see him arrive as the tutor of twin boys Clive and Whit, hired by their widowed father Sir Richard. With the closing of the estates doors Graham’s scary journey of death, mystery, and darkness begin. But love conquers all and finding it is a journey in itself.

I LOVED how this book sucked me in to this haunting world. It had the perfect creepy feel you look for in a book like this. Bonnie’s descriptions of every room in this creeptastic castle was divine! Each character was fantastically depicted and no matter how small their role in this book they stood out.

It’s a brilliant book that will have you biting your nails and vibrating in your seat!

A gothic love story indeed… with ghosts and all!

Historical romance is not dull— “The door stood open like a challenge. As if the creature that dwelled within toyed with us. You really want to enter here? Come along in then.” – from The Tutor

I’ve written a number of historicals with Summer Devon, as well as several on my own. Probably our most popular title is The Gentleman and the Rogue, about a prostitute hired by a suicidal lord for one last night of pleasure—except the cocky bugger gets under his skin and brings him a glimmer of hope and light. I love romances that cross a societal chasm. Servants and masters are the best, but basically anything that brings opposites together makes me happy.

Historical novels have automatic built-in high stakes for gay lovers since sodomy was considered a crime punishable by hanging and in more recent years by fines and jail time. Add in the great divide of the upper and lower classes and the story seethes with angst.

Historical romance is romantic— “I would keep you always. My feelings for you will only grow deeper over time.” – from The Tutor

As with any romance, the reader lives for a happy ending or at least happy for now. In historicals the couple can’t easily set up house together. The writer must figure out how they can manage to be as close together as possible without drawing attention to their relationship—an honest portrayal of the times.

With The Tutor I hope to gain new readers, maybe some who are feeling a little jaded with what they’re currently reading. Olden days can equal fresh and interesting. The Tutor is a mix of a lot of things, family angst and drama, creepy ghostly stuff, a healthy dose of humor due to the wise-ass narrator, Graham. Of course there’s also that Gothic must-have, the dark and brooding master of the house. Graham must awaken Sir Richard and bring him out of his gloom using charm and sex appeal.

Summer and I have written eleven books together now, which includes a pair of upcoming releases, The Shepherd and the Solicitor and The Merchant and the Clergyman. So if you enjoy the tutor, there’s plenty of back list to explore.

I hope you’ll check out The Tutor, and the rest of my gay historical back list which you can find on this page of my web site: http://www.bonniedee.com/genre/gay-romance/

Thanks Meredith for inviting me to your blog to preach the gospel of historical gay love. Hoping to win new converts.

  3. The only book I've read was a co-author, The Psychic and the Sleuth, and I absolutely loved it. It felt real, which is important in historicals, and also captured my attention.

  5. I am quite a fan of Bonnie Dee, including her co-written work with Summer Devon, and it would be tricky to name a favourite. I am very fond of the historical stories such as The Psychic & a Sleuth and The Nobleman & The Spy as well as the more contemporary story The Au Pair Affair (would love another story from this pairing or perhaps someone in their circle?).
