Review

I loved book one, Five Minutes Longer, that I had read it so fast and did nothing until it was done. Who We Truly Are was even better!

Getting a closer and more in-depth feel of both Finn and Talon as people and as a couple was everything that I was looking for. Add in the danger and action and all the new enhanced, and I was blown away. Victoria Sue has been a long time favorite author of mine and she has truly outdone this series and its characters.

Finn and Talon butt heads a lot in this book trying to find that spot in their very new relationship. Talon wants to push Finn away but finding it so hard to do. Finn wants nothing more than to be closer to Talon but never feeling like he measures up. They both carry some insecurities that play a part in their actions toward each other and on the team. And the realistic feel in an alternate universe book felt right and perfect and kept me coming back for more.

The world building the author has done in this series is fantastic. There’s no info dump with the science behind the enhanced abilities; it’s more of who the character, like Finn, is. He’s the brainy type that holds all these random facts but understands the complexities of his team's abilities, and in conversation that moves the story forward, we learn more about the why of things. The twists and turns Victoria takes us on is a roller coaster that I never wanted to get off.

I can’t wait for the next one. Give me more of the chemistry, more of the action, and definitely more surprises. And oh, I’d love to see how that new partnership is going to play out!

Excerpt

“You ready?” Sawyer asked as they felt the truck slow, then pick up again as it moved through the barrier.
“Well, if I’m not, we’re screwed,” Talon said dryly.
“Just relax and…. I kind of try to center myself,” Sawyer said awkwardly, clearly uncomfortable.
“Would it help if we burned incense?”
Sawyer’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t have time to make any sarcastic comeback because the truck stopped and they could hear Jake explaining loudly that they had been asked to do a survey, and it wasn’t his job to question what he was told.
There came a quiet tap on the back door, and Talon quickly opened it. Landring nodded, shut the door behind them, and stepped around the truck to join in the argument with Jake and some guy who had appeared after they had informed them who they were through the com, so the security gate had been lifted. He didn’t sound convinced, but it didn’t matter. They only needed a second.
Sawyer took an exaggerated deep breath and disappeared. Talon knew it was for his benefit. He focused on his hand and took the same slow, deep breath. Shit. Fuck. Fuck. Talon nearly snarled as his hand was still visible, along with the rest of him. He tried to fight the rising panic down. Crap, he could really do with Christopher. Talon took another breath as Christopher’s voice filtered into his mind. Relax.
For a second Talon thought it was a memory, but then he dismissed it as his hand vanished. He looked down quickly in sudden jubilation. Without another second’s pause, he walked straight at the wall. He even had a brief image of Christopher laughing. Platform nine and three quarters? Christopher’s voice said in his head. But then he was standing in a small room. He couldn’t see Sawyer, and he jumped at the touch. And they both became visible. “I don’t want to push it in between,” he explained.
“There’s no one about. Let’s carry on. Hold on to me,” Sawyer instructed.
They walked straight at the door, and Talon closed his eyes. The corridor was empty, but Sawyer continued, and Talon saw he was heading straight for the door marked Restricted Access Only. This time he didn’t close his eyes. He just simply walked from one room to the next with a brief second of gray in between.
Shit. He had a second to process the three guys looking at the wall, and he grabbed at his ability just as the IM injection rifles pointing at them all shot randomly at the wall. Sawyer got hit once and stumbled. Talon didn’t have so much as a chance to breathe, and certainly no chance to tense up as three darts all hit his body, and he was out cold.
