Review

I have absolutely been under a spell since being introduced to the North Star Trilogy. Posy Roberts' had me falling in love with her characters Kevin and Hugo from her first novel Spark. 

The final book and chapter in their lives was one that was met head on with heart wrenching challenges. After the lost of a beautiful woman, and the mother to Kevin's amazing children he and Hugo are faced with the possibility of losing them. It was an emotional roller coaster that they all struggled with, and now months later are facing more heartache. 

However, that is not the only challenges our new couple with a family faces. Hugo being away from his job takes a toll more so on Hugo. Kevin still having some backlash from his snubbing country club friends who look down at not only his new relationship but also at Hugo. 

I laughed, cried, and shared in all of their struggles and triumphs. I loved the co-characters of Russell and Sunshine because they helped along the way to give them structure as well as advise. 

As with all great series I was happy and sad that it came to an end. I am just so excited that I was able to take the journey with these two incredible men.

Review

I was honored to read Posy Robert's beautifully written novel "Fusion". This is Posy's second novel in the series and must be read in order, the first being "Spark," in which she introduces her character's Kevin and Hugo. 

After everything Kevin and Hugo had struggled through, it finally seemed that their future together was more of a possibility then just a mere distant dream. Hugo's insecurities, while still present from time to time, didn't seem to hold him back from opening up to a future with Kevin. As with Kevin, he was finally able to stop being dominated by the image of his domineering and bigoted father.

As both Kevin and Hugo start to get more comfortable with their growing relationship and the upcoming divorce between Kevin and Erin devastating news throws everybody's life in a downward spiral.

I was consumed with so many emotions as I read this emotionally, heartbreaking, yet inspiring journey of Kevin and Hugo's. These two men were faced with a situation that had no possible great outcome and were lost as how to be able to make the correct choices. However, what may seem so strange to on lookers or those not privileged enough to actually have the open minds to accept things that are always "in the norm" to them, would not even understand that through Erin, those two were able to gain strength and determination to let their guards down and strive towards a future even after the worst devastation.

I was an emotional blabbering mess after reading this book and am absolutely excited and looking forward to the final book in this series.

Review

Posy Roberts' Northstar Trilogy was one of the first MM romances I read way back when. Spark is book one and in it we meet Hugo Thorson and Kevin Magnus, two men who have stayed with me for all this time. Spark is a story of first love, lost love, and then that amazing second chance that doesn't come along for everyone. Reading it again brought back all those feelings from before: the joy at these two finding one another after being apart for seventeen years, the hope as they start over and start again, the love of them together and apart and the happiness as they navigate their new relationship. Spark is a friends to lovers, second-chance romance at it's best. Full of feelings and emotional scenes and characters that will stay with you for a long time. 

One of the things I loved most about Spark was the fact that it spans such a long time frame. From the time Kevin and Hugo first meet when they're in high school to seventeen years later when they cross paths again. Posy does a remarkable job of using flashbacks to show us how Kevin and Hugo began as closeted boyfriends all those years ago and how that relationship affects their lives going forward. When they meet by chance as adults we find Hugo working as an actor and part-time drag queen, Miss Cherrie Pop. Kevin is still in the closet, and an about to be divorced father of 2. You can tell from the first moment these two see one another again that the spark is still there; their connection is strong and deep. It doesn't take long for a new relationship (or maybe it's a continuation of the one started long ago?) to develop and for their love to begin to grow once more. 

I liked how the romance played out. It was sizzling hot at times (um, the scene in the lake for instance!) but at others it was quiet and tender, but still full of intensity and passion. The kids added a bit of light relief and were utterly adorable. I'd like to commend Posy for her portrayal of Summer and Kevin's ex-wife, Erin. She could have taken these characters any direction and is such a refreshing change to see them as loving, supportive women instead of the cliched harpies they could have been. This goes especially for Erin. I really enjoyed her character and what she brought to the book. The writing is beautiful, full of evocative imagery and emotion. Nothing felt flat and the flashbacks could have easily taken me out of the story, but instead they just added to my overall enjoyment. 

If you've never read anything by Posy Roberts, Spark is the perfect place to start. It's the first book of an astounding trilogy ... and those new covers are on fire! Be sure to check this one out people if somehow it's passed you by. You won't be sorry if you do!

These two men meet while Nate is working as the geisha Momo at one of William’s work dinners. One date and Nate starts to work his way into William’s heart and head, which throws William’s entire world topsy turvy.

He’s spent his whole life learning how to “hide” in plain sight, to only be noticed for those characteristics he’s carefully crafted to be worthy of seeing. Then wherever they go, Nate comes into his life and draws attention to them with his lively laugh and freedom.

And that’s the true conflict in the story. Brave the spotlight for the man he loves, or stay alone in the shadows…

Review

Posy Roberts has been one of my auto-buy authors ever since I read North Star. She never fails to write about remarkably diverse people and I so appreciate that. In her new short story, Momo: My Everything (which I understand is an extension of a previous shorter story--that I never read) we are introduced to two men who show that opposites can definitely attract. William and Nate epitomize the saying "first impressions aren't always correct." And the fact that William is an African-American and Nate an effeminate man made this book all the more intriguing to me. 

I loved Nate. So, so much. He's flamboyant and proud and charming. I loved his confidence in himself and the way he expressed himself through his clothes and actions. William, he was a harder sell for me. The story is told exclusively from his POV and I sorely wish we would have heard from Nate as well. I got where William was coming from most of the time, but his self-imposed rigidity about stereotypes and how a "man" should act were pretty off-putting. Luckily Nate's effervescent personality shines through in every scene so the story didn't get anywhere near as angst ridden as it could have been. I'm normally not a huge fan of insta-love but the fact that Momo is only 90 pages means that things move at a fast pace and that the connection needs to be in place pretty early. I did like the fact that once the two men meet, they do take things a little slow and that they don't jump into bed together right off the bat.

Even though this isn't my favorite book by Posy Roberts, it's still really good and I highly recommend you check it out. Learning more about tea houses and geisha's was really interesting and Posy's characters are always memorable and William and Nate are no different. And Momo ... she'll definitely stay with you a while! Give this one a try, you won't be sorry!

This is another great little story in Dreamspinner Press’s 2016 Advent Calendar Bah Humbug. 

Analog to Digital is Ethan and Toby’s story.

Ethan and Toby live in California. Toby is a man who works with his hands building and saving precious things. He’s an artist. Much like Ethan even though Ethan’s creativity is more computer based. Both are wicked clever and very much in love.

Both have agreed to never marry but that’s easy to say in the beginning of a relationship or even when you’re not in one. Time has changed Ethan’s mind and he now finds himself questioning Toby’s commitment to them.

In each of these advent stories it’s like finding the scrooge on the story and in this one you’d think it would be Toby but it’s Ethan.

I loved how this played out and the sweet surprise ending. It’s a great addition to this anthology!

REVIEW

Ohhhhh ... it was so SO nice to get back to Kaleidoscope Gardens and see Hudson, Jude, Leo, Charlie, Freya, Molly and the rest. I love this place; I would love to visit. No lie. I don't know that I could live there, but oh man, it's so much fun reading about it. If you've read, Farm Fresh, book one in the Naked Organics series, then you know that Kaleidoscope Gardens, located in Washington, is the commune where Hudson, Jude, Leo, Charlie and the others make their home. It's a magical place. Full of love and acceptance and family. A thing that both Hudson and Jude need desperately. That family is threatened in the newest installment.

A letter from Hudson's estranged mother sends him into a tailspin ... and has him planning a cross country trip, in the commune's psychedelic VW bus, to Kentucky to settle his grandmother's estate. To say he doesn't want to leave the peace and safety of the Gardens is an understatement, but it's a journey he must make, if only to get closure and move on from the family that discarded him so many years before. He also doesn't want to leave Jude, now that they've both agreed to be in a relationship. Hudson's heart is heavy at the prospect of leaving Jude for the two weeks he's planning on being away, but when Jude surprises him to say he's going with him to Kentucky, the two head out on their adventure.

Things don't always go smoothly along the way, especially when Jude has to face his own estranged family when an emergency comes up and Hudson and Jude have to make an unexpected stop to help. However as the miles add up as they make their way across the country, you can see Hudson and Jude becoming even closer the more time they spend together talking ... and having sex.

The Naked Organics series as a whole is both bold and beautiful, and will challenge your beliefs of love and sexuality. Sex positive stories are few and far between, especially ones written as exquisitely as Posy's Farm Fresh and Picked Fresh. Watching Jude overcome his sexual hang ups was both satisfying and joyful to watch. Hudson and Jude connect in such a spiritual, sensual way that it's just breathtaking. I love these two together. I love Jude's almost insatiable need for Hudson, and Hudson's absolute willingness to give Jude everything he wants. Their connection goes much deeper than just sexual though, and it's so beautiful.

Picked Fresh is not all happiness and light though, especially when Hudson and Jude arrive in Kentucky and have to deal with Hudson's mom and the pain she inflicted on him before he fled to Washington. Hudson and Jude also find out that their home is being threatened in the worst way, news that sends both of them into a panic and a wish to be back at the commune with the people and the place that means so much to them both. Because there are multiple POV's throughout the story, we also get to see Leo and Charlie, and Posy's storytelling is so engrossing, I couldn't put this book down and read it from start to finish in one sitting. And then didn't want it to end.

We need more books like this. Ones that show body and sex positive people in a way that will make you rethink any preconceived notions you might have. Love is beautiful in all its forms and I can't wait to see what comes next for the lovely residents of Kaleidoscope Gardens.

 
 

Jude shifted in his seat and stared at Hudson. Hudson couldn’t take his eyes off the road, but the desire to turn toward Jude and mirror him was overwhelming. “What was your first impression of me when I met you at the farmers market?”

“Should I be diplomatic or honest?”

“Honest.”

Hudson ran that day over in his mind. It was crystal clear, still, even though it had been more than nine months ago. Jude had meandered from stand to stand. He initially stood out from the crowd because of what he was wearing: a bright blue, almost turquoise wool coat over a black turtleneck and tight black jeans. In the blur of quilted plaid flannel and fleece hoodies in various shades of drab, olive, and Carhartt, Jude was all Hudson could see.

“I couldn’t keep my eyes off you. You were… stunning.” He shook his head. “I don’t know another word for it. I was talking to some customer about how we raised our chickens, and when I saw you, I stopped midsentence. I stared, felt like a dirty old man because you looked so young, and when I turned back to the woman to carry on our conversation, I had no idea what we’d been talking about. Literally none. It was like looking at you sucked the words out of my throat and the thoughts right out of my head.”

Jude chuckled. “Seriously? Was it the coat?”

“It made you stand out, but no, it wasn’t the coat. It was everything about you. Your broad shoulders and your hair and your eyes and your fucking lips.”

“You like my lips?” Jude pulled his rose-flavored lip stuff out of his front pocket and made a show of smearing it across the bottom one. Then he rubbed his lips together and licked them, all while staring at Hudson with soft bedroom eyes.

The bus vibrated, a jagged noise piercing Hudson’s ears as he drove too far to the right, edging his tires onto the rumble strip. “¡Coño!” He maneuvered back into the center of his lane.

Jude laughed. Hudson’s heart thundered against his rib cage.

“You’re evil,” Hudson said. “Evil, I tell you!”

“Maybe.” Jude bit at his bottom lip.

“Stop. Stop tempting me with your fucking gorgeous mouth. I can’t have you doing that shit while I’m driving.”

“Okay.” Jude smirked but kept his tongue and teeth from doing anything else. He put away those hazel sex-eyes too. “So, how did you see this trip going down?”

“Just like that?” Hudson was incredulous.

“What?”

“You can just turn it on and off like a switch?”

“With you, sure.”

“Well, I can’t.” Hudson gestured to his crotch, where his dick was obvious, thick, and quickly moving on its way to fully hard, even though Jude had stopped the licking and the biting.

“Want me to touch you?” Jude’s voice was breathy as he slid his warm palm up Hudson’s inner thigh. He thumbed over the head of Hudson’s cock, and Hudson got harder. Jude played with just the head, moving back and forth, his touch light and delicious.

“Want me to drive off the road?” Hudson managed not to sound choked off.

“No.” Jude pulled his hand away and smiled like the devil. “I want you to drive. And I want you to tell me about what you want to do on this trip besides the obvious. And for the record, turning it off doesn’t happen like a switch. Turning me on with one look, easy!”

“You’re dangerous.”

“Damn right I am.”

Posy Roberts writes about the realistic struggles of men looking for love. Whether her characters are family men, drag queens, or lonely men searching for connections, they all find a home in her stories.

Posy is a Jill of all trades and master of the drill and paintbrush. She’s married to a partner who makes sure she doesn’t forget to eat or sleep during her writing frenzies. Her daughter, a budding author and cinematographer, helps her come up with character names. For fun, Posy enjoys crafting, hiking, and singing spontaneously about the mundane, just to make regular life more interesting.
