Synopsis

Will Lex be willing to sacrifice his long-held secrets for true love?
Nick Barker was thrilled. A summer working on his college roommate’s family ranch was a dream come true for a veterinary student. He didn’t anticipate his reaction to his best friend and roommate’s father, though.
Lex Whitefeather hired his son Sam’s best friend for the summer. He figured he’d be generous and help the kid out. He wasn’t expecting the young Adonis who stepped off the plane. Nick Barker was no kid. Years of repressed sexual desires rose to the surface that summer.
When Lex and Nick finally come together and admit their feelings, Lex is plagued by guilt. He’s not “out” to his family and friends. Lex pushes Nick away with his unwillingness to open up to his family.
A few years later, Nick is back on the ranch…

Review

I love cowboy stories. I love the environment, the animals, the location, and of course...the cowboys. They’re the one contemporary story that feels like it takes place in a different world than the one I live every day. I was not fond of this cowboy story.

Overall the story was, I hate to say it, but boring. These two guys fall for each other, but because Lex (the Native American cowboy) was deep in the closet, Nick decided he wouldn’t stay and become more invested in something that would never be. In a shorter story, this part of the story was handled well. It flowed and read easily. It’s the rest that I have an issue with.

Nick comes back at the request of Lex’s son and his ex-best friend, Sam. The resolution after three years apart and untold emotions was too easy, not enough talk, and way too much sex. Novella or not I needed more to believe Nick went from not looking forward to seeing Lex to back together with him within a day.

The writing at this point, in my opinion, went downhill around this part. It was cheesy and corny and the flow was not as great. Now some people like that kind of writing (cheesy & corny)but it’s just not for me. I loved the characters especially Nick right from the start. Lex took a bit to grow on me but not because he was bad or anything. It was more of a lack of connection due to his own emotions.

Lastly, and MOST importantly, I mentioned earlier that Lex Whitefeather is Native American. He is described as what most know of one to look like; long black straight hair, bronzed skin which is fine. What isn’t fine, as someone who is Native American, is the times like in Chapter 10 that the author wrote that Nick wanted to see Lex in a loincloth, that he was going to buy him one and they were going to play “Indian-catches-the-cowboy game” afterward. Like it was something sexy. Then in Chapter 12 as a surprise for their anniversary, Lex plays this “game” out with him. I’m not easily offended, but I was by this. The author gave voice to a terrible set of dialogue and had Lex acting stupid. Like sniffing Nick lower regions like a dog under the guise that Lex didn't know what “it” was. It was corny, and I will admit the over the top nature of it all made me laugh. But I was offended by this “game” being turned into a sex act or something sexy at all.

I know this author or publisher probably didn’t mean to offend but as it has been said numerous times if you are writing about a group of people you don’t know about ask someone of that group.

Review

Much like the title, Finnegan's Promise, author Carol Lynne wrote a book with a lot of promise. A pro football player who lives in the closet and has a strained relationship with his father. A bartender with his own secrets. A dying father who only wants to make amends with his son ... this book had a lot of potential. This is a re-release of a book originally from 2007 and I didn't read that edition so I don't know if any changes have been made in regards to content and such--there is a new, much better cover though. Unfortunately, I found that Finnegan's Promise didn't quite deliver what had the potential to be a really great book.

From the beginning chapter, both Calder 'Fin' and Mick fell sort of flat as characters. There was next to no character development so there was hardly anything to go on to let me know who these two were as people. And as such, there was little emotional depth to either of them...and other than having sex almost from their first meeting, and having it constantly, I didn't believe in their connection. Insta-love is hard to pull off, and I don't think it worked here. Now for a couple of good things. I really liked the fact that Fin and his father, Sean, were able to reconcile. Yeah, it was predictable, but it still made me sniffle and packed an emotional punch. The ending, while it was definitely like one of those feel good sports movies, was still lovely.

I wish there had been more story instead of so much sex, especially since this is a short book. I wish the characters would have been fleshed out better so I would have been invested in their HEA. This might be a case of it's me not the book so for sure give this one a try and see what you think. I hope you'll like it even though it wasn't really for me.

Favorite Feel Good Books~ Part One!!

PART ONE

I, once again, went to the M/M Book Rec Group on Facebook with the question: What are your favorite feel good books?

Of course the list became very long. So, again, I have to break it into parts. This is part one. If you're looking for a book that's going to put a smile on your face, this is a post for you...

Perfect Imperfection by Cardeno C

Blurb:

Hollywood royalty Jeremy Jameson has lived a sheltered life with music as his sole focus and only friend. Before embarking on yet another international concert tour, he wanders into a bar in what he considers the middle of nowhere and meets a man who wins him over with his friendly smile and easy-going nature. Accountant slash bartender slash adventure-seeker Reg Moore has fun talking and drinking with The Jeremy Jameson and can’t say no when the supposedly straight rock star makes him a once in a lifetime offer: keep him company on his tour by playing the part of his boyfriend.

Listening to music, traveling the world, and jumping off cliffs is fun. Falling in love is even better. But to stay with Jeremy after the stage lights dim, Reg will need to help him realize there’s nothing pretend about their relationship.

Frog by Mary Calmes

Blurb:
Weber Yates's dreams of stardom are about to be reduced to a ranch hand's job in Texas, and his one relationship is with a guy so far out of his league he might as well be on the moon. Or at least in San Francisco, where Weber stops to see him one last time before settling down to the humble, lonely life he figures a frog like him has coming. Cyrus Benning is a successful neurosurgeon, so details are never lost on him. He spotted the prince in a broken-down bull rider's clothing from day one. But watching Weber walk out on him keeps getting harder, and he's not sure how much more his heart can take. Now Cyrus has one last chance to prove to Weber that it's not Weber's job that makes him Cyrus's perfect man, it's Weber himself. With the help of his sister's newly broken family, he's ready to show Weber that the home the man's been searching for has always been right there, with him. Cyrus might have laid down an ultimatum once, but now it's turned into a vow-he's never going to let Weber out of his life again.

Superhero by Eli Easton

Blurb:
It’s not easy for a young gay artist like Jordan Carson to grow up in Jefferson, Wisconsin, where all anyone seems to care about in middle school and high school are the sports teams. But Jordan was lucky. He met Owen Nelson in the second grade, and they’ve been BFFs ever since. Owen is a big, beautiful blond and their school’s champion wrestler. No one messes with Owen, or with anyone close to him, and he bucks popular opinion by keeping Jordan as his wingman even after Jordan comes out at school.

Their friendship survives, but Jordan’s worst enemy may be himself: he can’t seem to help the fact that he is head-over-heels in love with a hopeless case—his straight friend, Owen. Owen won’t let anything take Jordan’s friendship away, but he never counted on Jordan running off to find a life of his own. Owen will have to face the nature of their relationship if he’s to win Jordan back.

Loving Jay by Renae Kaye

Blurb:
One thing Liam Turner knows for sure is that he's not gay—after all, his father makes it very clear he’ll allow no son of his to be gay. And Liam believes it, until a chance meeting with James “Jay” Bell turns Liam’s world upside-down. Jay is vivacious and unabashedly gay—from the tips of his bleached hair to the ends of his polished nails. With a flair for fashion, overreaction, and an inability to cork his verbal diarrhea, Liam believes drama queen Jay must have a screw loose.

An accident as a teenager left Liam with a limp and a fear of driving. He can’t play football anymore either, and that makes him feel like less of a man. But that’s no reason to question his sexuality... unless the accident broke something else inside him. When being with Jay causes Liam’s protective instincts to emerge, Liam starts to believe all he knew in life had been a convenient excuse to stay hidden. From intolerance to confrontations, Liam must learn to overcome his fears—and his father—before he can accept his sexuality and truly love Jay.

Paying off his dream requires making it through a couple more years, which means being open about his sexuality isn't in the cards just yet.

When the two take their flirting to the next level, Cary wonders if he can handle another guy who might take off, while Heath has to decide if he can risk his dream of a laid back life—and giving up his long-held and much enjoyed bachelor status while taking on a child when being a father was never on his to-do list. Will they sink, or will they keep swimming?

Skipper can’t dream of a better family than Richie—but Richie’s got real family entanglements he can’t shake off. Skipper needs to convince Richie to stay with him beyond winter ball so the relationship they started on the field might become their happy future in real life!

Devastated, he throws himself into the work of the Pit Bull Foundation he and his friends started.

Spirit Sanguine by Lou Harper

Blurb:
Is that a wooden stake in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

After five years in eastern Europe using his unique, inborn skills to slay bloodsuckers, Gabe is back in his hometown Chicago and feeling adrift. Until he’s kidnapped by a young, sexy vampire who seems more interested in getting into his pants than biting into his neck.

Harvey Feng is one-half Chinese, one-hundred-percent vampire. He warns Gabe to stay out of the Windy City, but somehow he isn’t surprised when the young slayer winds up on his doorstep. And why shouldn’t Gabe be curious? A vegetarian vampire isn’t something one sees every day.

Against their better judgment, slayer and vampire succumb to temptation. But their affair attracts unexpected attention.

When Chicago’s Vampire Boss makes Gabe an offer he can’t refuse, the unlikely lovers are thrust into peril and mystery in the dark heart of the Windy City. Together they hunt for kidnappers, a killer preying on young humans, and vicious vampire junkies.

However, dealing with murderous humans and vampires alike is easy compared to figuring out if there’s more to their relationship than hot, kinky sex.

Warning: Fangalicious man-on-man action, a troublesome twink, cross-dressing vampiress, and role-playing involving a fedora.
