Synopsis

He’d been afraid of me, and I had used fear to keep him away until I couldn’t stand to be anywhere but close.

Dante Heron has lived a life surrounded by pointless affection and impossible demands. Driven to the brink by his parents in pursuit of fame and fortune, he has learned to circumvent anything that would force him to feel more than he can stand. Until Chris. But then, he drove away Chris just as surely as he'd chased off everyone else.

Lost and afraid of the truth of that rejection, Dante pines from afar—more used to suffering than facing his problems. However, his feelings continue to torment him and no matter how many times he wants to leave the past behind, it won't let go.

Magnetic is a short companion story to Volatile in the Treacherous Chemistry series.

Review

I missed these boys. I missed the tense, raw writing. I missed Dante and how broken he was without Chris. I missed Chris being by him. I am beyond happy to finally get this part of their story I had wanted after reading book one, Volatile.

I had written this in my review of book one:

Although it felt a bit rushed and maybe too easy it was the Dante we see after all the hard times are coming to an end. This Dante to me did not feel authentic to the one we met through the rest of the story. There was almost a complete shift in how he acted and one that I couldn’t understand and felt...fake?

This short story cleared up any issues I had after finishing Volatile. Yes, it’s after reading it, but it was such an important part of understanding the Dante we saw at the end. How did he get there? What happened during their time apart? This answered that and more for me. It was just as beautiful, just as heart breaking, and just as perfectly broken. I still hate Dante’s parents but that’s okay, they deserve my anger for how they still treat their son.

If you’ve never read these books. Do it. You won’t regret it. You’ll wonder and think and rage, but you will come out the other end reading a story worth all those emotions.

Blog Tour: Toxic by Avylinn Winter ~Guest Post #Giveaway

Together

Around the time I sent in Toxic to my publisher last October, I’d learned that I wasn’t the only one about to release a novel about domestic violence in a same sex relationship. At first, I was absolutely gutted because the topic is tough and I worried that readers wouldn’t want to read three novels about the same gritty reality over a short period of time.

I began to chide myself for taking so long to finish it. And, anxious as I am, I began to think of various ways in which our novels would follow the same routes. Would readers start to rate them against each other? I know it sounds ridiculous, but to me it was a real worry.

As it happened, I calmed down and instead of trying not to think about it, I decided that it would be much better if we all worked together. I’m not saying this was entirely my idea because I think that Tyler May and R. Phoenix were much more enthusiastic about doing this together than I was. (I remained slightly petrified). However, I truly believe that working together was what saved me in the end, and it also taught me a great deal.

R. Phoenix released her novel first, and when I read that one I began to truly realize how different our stories would be, as well as how important it was that several stories were told rather than just one. Here I would like to add that our novels aren’t the only ones, nor the first, and in fact, two other novels with domestic violence themes have been released this spring as well.

In R. Phoenix’s Too Close, the abuse has been going on for quite some time. We meet Skylar when he is still trapped with danger only to see him break loose and find love again. The novel is foremost about leaving. It’s a heartbreaking tale of finding strength and hope.

Tyler May released her novel The Struggle Within mere days before my release of Toxic was scheduled, and we did a fair amount of promotion together. Her story focused on the aftermath, years after the abuse, with flashbacks and memories relaying the back story of a deceased abuser. The way she handles PSTD is commendable, and there is also a true chance for real romance in that story because we meet Ryan years later. This is a beautiful story of survival and all the struggles that come with it.

In Toxic, my main focus was to understand how it is possible for a victim to fall into the clutches of an abuser and stay. Adam battles with himself to rationalize what is happening to him, and he finds himself with guilt that proves hard to get rid of. But, because I didn’t want to leave Adam entirely without hope and prospects for a happier life, I included supportive friends and romance as well. Adam gets out, but by then, the story arc is all but over. This posed a few problems, one being that Adam didn’t have enough time to recover to truly find a HEA. I’d categorize it more like a HFN. There’s one more story coming in this series, however, and perhaps we’ll get a bit more closure in the next installment. Toxic is also more in-your-face than the other two, and from reading a few reviews, it appears that Toxic is the one that gets labeled with warnings the most. It’s not surprising, so just be aware that it’s a tough read. It has received praise from those who value that I’ve attempted to give an accurate account of what goes on in an abusive relationship.

In a sense, I would suggest that if you want to read these stories, you should begin with either Too Close or Toxic and finish with The Struggle Within. Tyler May picks up where R. Phoenix and I ran out of pages. Because, the tale of domestic violence is a tale of several parts. It’s about how you get tangled up, how you find strength within yourself to say stop, how you leave, and finally how you survive and how that struggle to live and love continues for a long time.

Happy Reading! (Please don’t forget tissues)

Review

Avylinn Winter is a new to me author and her book, Toxic, is the second book in her Treacherous series. Avylinn states on Goodreads that the book can be read as a standalone, and upon finishing reading this, I can say I agree. I think I would have gotten MORE out of Toxic had I read the first book in the series, Volatile, but I was able to follow along and understand the characters just fine. I think it's fair to state upfront that this book is difficult to read and may have some triggers for anyone who has suffered from domestic violence. I'm always leery of trigger warnings, but in this case, I think they're warranted.

Toxic is the story of Adam Webber. He's been in love with his best friend, Gabriel Connor, for years. When Adam finally admits his feelings for Gabriel, a switch is thrown and things take a drastic turn. Adam is convinced he loves Gabriel and because of this, he refused to give up on Gabriel. Once they begin a romantic relationship, things take a scary twist and Adam is sucked into a world of violence and abuse. Toxic is by no means an easy read. Winter's portrayal of the mental and physical abuse Adam endures at the hands of Gabriel is difficult to get through though she does handle it with care. From the helplessness and shame Adam feels to the desperate worry of his friends, its all a punch to the gut.

I did have a few niggles with the story line though. Adam and Gabriel are YOUNG, like early twenties and yes I know abuse can happen at any age, this just hit me wrong. And Gabriel's complete personality change was hard to swallow. From protector when they were younger to cruel abuser in such a short amount of time felt ... off. Adam's friends give Adam hope he can get out of his situation, none more so than Cameron. There is a sense of light at the end of the tunnel once Adam's friends stage an intervention and we begin to see Adam struggle to free himself of Gabriel and the toxicity of their relationship. I'm not gonna lie people, this one will hurt. It's hard to stomach at times and I wouldn't categorize it as a romance per se. But it is a story about strength and survival and love. If this sounds like your thing, give Toxic a try. The writing is really good, the story line compelling, and that characters are guaranteed to stick with you long after you read the last page. Be warned though, have lots of tissue close at hand. You'll need it!

Toxic is the second novel in the Treacherous Chemistry series, following characters introduced in Volatile. However, it can be read as a stand-alone. It's a story about love, but also about the dangers of loving what you shouldn't.

I wrote this story as an attempt to understand why we sometimes fail to recognize what's bad for us, but most of all I wrote it for Adam, and all the Adams out there across the world. I wanted to give him strength, resilience and hope in a situation far too many has to navigate.

Toxic is by no means a light read, and it would be unfair of me to label it as such. I've been known to play with readers' emotions, and Toxic is no exception. And, although it is a story about love, some will likely say this novel contains elements of general fiction. However, as long as you know what you're up against, Toxic will hopefully give you something to remember and something to ponder.

You will get to meet Dante and Chris again, but also make a new acquaintance in Cameron. If nothing else, these three will undoubtedly make you smile when you most need it. I promise.

Toxic has been posted on Wattpad as a draft, which is the reason you see ratings before the release date. It collected over a million reads on the site before I took it down for publication, which gave me some confidence that Adam's story was worth telling despite the toll it took on me.

I hope you'll let sweet Adam tell you his story because it's an important one.

Review

Parents are our foundations. They raise us with love, support, and a knowledge we crave during the tough times, the times we need some advice that we don’t think anyone can give us. They are the people that are supposed to be there no matter what happens in our lives. Right there loving us. Encouraging us to push through. To lose that kind of love and support at any age is hard but at 17 years old it must be unimaginable pain.

Or maybe never having that type of love and support of our parents is worse. Living every day with the knowledge that you will never be good enough to live up to their expectations. That your life is now what they want it to be and not what you need it to be. Slowly dying inside with every day we don’t live our truth. Every day we push our heart and desires further and further away.

Not sure which one is worse but Chris Sinclair and Dante Heron live these truths every day. Will they be able to find their way out, to a place that they can be happy and whole once again?

I had heard some really good things about this story before I started to read it so I was really looking forward to it since Avylinn Winter is a new to me author. Plus I love, love angsty stories especially when it’s both MC’s going through some major stuff. The story is told through Chris’s POV but both characters were thoroughly fleshed out so you never feel like you are missing a part of Dante for not getting his “side”. I actually feel that having his POV would’ve made the story too heavy, even more so than it already was. Chris lost his mother at 17 years old and went to live with his model brother Ayd. This is when Chris, through an acquaintance of his brothers, is introduced to the very talented violinists Dante.

It took me a little bit to get used to Avylinn’s writing style even though it was a little hard for me in the beginning,  once again I wouldn’t want the story written any other way because I think her style was perfect for these characters. This was in no way an easy read. It had its ups and downs, misunderstandings and lack of communication, but it also had love. A love hard won and fought for. Through personal trials and the banishing of old ghosts.

Dante was quite the riddle for Chris to figure out and he had some time to do it since he will be spending the summer traveling with him as his assistant during Dante’s concert tour. But figuring out a riddle of another person, a man that you find yourself attracted to, when you have never felt this for another guy
Is made more difficult by the distance Chris himself doesn’t realize he keeps between them. Chris’s journey of self-discovery about his sexuality, the loss of his mom, and where he goes from here was one of the best journey’s I’ve been on this year in reading.

Every once in a while and very slowly we get to see glimpses of the Dante that’s underneath all the arrogance and ill-tempered behavior. And what we see is a life full of pain and a young man who grew up being a violin prodigy whose parents wanted more and more from him each day. Living a life that no 13 year old boy is ever ready for. What draws Chris to Dante is the man he sees when Dante is up on stage playing his violin with such magic that eh falls under his spell every time he hears him play. But what he has to work through is how to get to that man when he is off stage and shuts everyone else out.

I will say again, I loved this story, BUT….yes there is a but. It took me sometime to figure out what felt off about the end of this story because how can a HEA feel off? Although it felt a bit rushed and maybe too easy it was the Dante we see after all the hard times are coming to an end. This Dante to me did not feel authentic to the one we met through the rest of the story. There was almost a complete shift in how he acted and one that I couldn’t understand and felt...fake? I loved the difficult Dante because he deserved to be that way. His life was super hard for anyone to get through without scars but he was a child for most of the worst parts. Which meant, of course, those scars are long lasting. The author, in the way she played out the HEA, basically erased all of that and it that made the ending feel off. Chris as well but in a smaller way that could just be my own personal preference.

I wish I could just come out and name the things that were off specifically since I think it would give a better understanding of my WHY’s but unfortunately I think you need to read this book to judge for yourself. And please do because even with my uncertainty about the ending this was truly a unique, beautiful, and intriguing story that I am so glad I got the chance to experience.
